    Notes: Mechanical demoisturing of filter cakes. Flow and centrifugal demoisturing and pressing are the principal methods of mechanical demoisturing of filter cakes. In flow demoisturing cracking has a detrimental effect. Compressibility, flow and centrifugal demoisturing can be completely described mathematically in dimensionless form. The limitations of mechanical demoisturing are presented for individual examples of apparatus.

    Description / Table of Contents: Progress in the mechanical separation of liquids by filtration. Despite increasing costs of plant and equipment, the mechanical separation of liquids still remains a relatively cheap process step. Even finely dispersed solids can be concentrated by more than an order of magnitude, often in only one step, with relatively small consumption of energy. Of the broad spectrum of available apparatus in the chemical industry, gas-tight encased filters are claiming increasing importance from the point of view of factory hygiene and safety. Several models have been proposed for the partial processes of filtration, washing and removal of moisture from the filter cake. In practice, however, the simple approximated description of cake formation with the aid of the Darcy equation is usually satisfactory enough. However, in the case of solids which have a strong tendency to segregate and of compressible cakes, the assumption of a homogeneous cake structure is no longer permissible. The removal of moisture from the filter cake by blower or suction drying is only permissible to a limited extent, owing to formation of cracks which often occur on shrinking. If the formation of cracks cannot be suppressed, then the more favourable method is either centrifugal drying or mechanical pressing. Exhaust-air problems are avoided with these two methods of drying. The essential properties of the substances to be assessed can be determined in laboratory experiments. The data obtained permit the dimensioning of plant-scale machinery having far greater safety than hitherto. These data are also essential if the process is to be computer-controlled. Dynamic filtration opens up the possibility to concentrate and wash intrinsically viscous, difficulty filterable suspensions, continuously, in closed apparatus to the limit of their flowability.
    Notes: Trotz der gestiegenen Kosten für den apparativen Aufwand ist die mechanische Flüssigkeitsabtrennung immer noch ein relativ billiger Verfahrensschritt. Bei geringem Energieaufwand lassen sich selbst feindisperse Feststoffe um mehr als eine Zehnerpotenz, oft sogar noch einstufig, aufkonzentrieren. Aus der breiten Palette der verfügbaren Apparate gewinnt in der Chemischen Industrie das gasdicht gekapselte Filter aufgrund arbeitshygienischer und sicherheitstechnischer Gesichtspunkte zunehmend an Bedeutung. Für die Teilvorgänge Filtrieren, Auswaschen und Entfeuchten der Kuchenfiltration wurden mehrere Modellansätze vorgeschlagen. In der Praxis genügt jedoch meist die einfache, näherungsweise Beschreibung der Kuchenbildung mit Hilfe der Darcy-Gleichung. Bei stark zur Entmischung neigenden Feststoffen und bei kompressiblem Kuchen ist die Annahme einer homogenen Kuchenstruktur aber nicht mehr zulässig. Die Filterkuchenentfeuchtung durch Trockenblasen oder Trockensaugen ist wegen der beim Schrumpfen oft eintretenden Rißbildung nur im begrenztem Maße möglich. Gelingt es nicht, die Rißbildung zu unterdrücken, so ist das Trockenschleudern in Zentrifugen oder das mechanische Auspressen die günstigere Methode. Abluftprobleme werden bei diesen beiden Entfeuchtungsmethoden vermieden. Die zur Beurteilung erforderlichen Stoffeigenschaften können in Laborversuchen ermittelt werden. Die erarbeiteten Grundlagen erlauben es, die Dimensionierung der Betriebsmaschinen mit größerer Sicherheit durchzuführen als bisher. Diese Grundlagen sind auch dann notwendig, wenn die Steuerung des Verfahrens mit Prozeßrechnern beabsichtigt ist.Mit der sog. dynamischen Filtration ist eine Möglichkeit eröffnet, strukturviskose, schwerer filtrierbare Suspensionen kontinuierlich in geschlossenen Apparaten bis an die Grenze ihrer Fließfähigkeit aufzukonzentrieren und zu waschen.
