Notes: Abstract  Six oriental cultivars of tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum L.) were evaluated for transformation and foreign gene expression. Leaf-disc explant tissue was transformed with Agrobacterium tumefaciens strain LBA4404 carrying the plasmid pARK21, which contains NPTII gene and ttr (tabtoxin resistance) gene conferring the resistance to Pseudomonas syringae pv. tabaci. The disease resistance of regenerated plants and segregation of this trait up to R7 progeny were investigated in a greenhouse and under field conditions. Our results indicated that the resistance to Pseudomonas syringae pv. tabaci introduced by transformation is heritable.

Notes: Abstract The effects of three forms of alginate (free acid, sodium and calcium salts) on ingestion and excretion of cholesterol in the rat were studied. For two weeks, Male Sprague-Dawley rats were fed a cholesterol-rich diet containing 3% alginate from the brown alga Ascophyllum nodosum. The food efficiency of the three types of alginate was: Na-alginate 〉 Ca-alginate 〉 alginic acid. A significant increase in the weight of cecum was also observed in alginate diets. Alginate was not effective in preventing the elevation of serum total cholesterol levels, although irregularly changing patterns were observed. The cholesterol level of liver showed a tendency to decrease with alginate feeding, while fecal excretion of cholesterol increased.

Notes: Abstract The superconducting phase of organic superconductors κ-(BEDT-TTF)2Cu(NCS)2 and (MDT-TTF)2AuI2 was investigated by the electron tunneling spectroscopy using low temperature STM. The tunneling differential conductance at the lateral surface of κ-(BEDT-TTF)2Cu(NCS)2 varies its shape depending on the tip direction. The in-plane anisotropy of the conductance is well explained by the d-wave symmetry with line nodes along the direction 45° from the c-axis. For (MDT-TTF)2AuI2, the tunneling conductance at T = 1.4 K shows the superconducting energy gap structure clearly. The finite conductance inside the gap edge suggests the gap anisotropy. The tunneling spectrum is explained by the d-wave pairing. The obtained gap Δ0 = 2 meV (2Δ0/kT c = 12) is larger than that of the weak coupling limit. The pseudogap structure is observed near T c .
