Notes: Abstract We considerN-particle systems whose probability distributions obey the master equation. For these systems, we derive the necessary and sufficient conditions under which the reducedn-particle (n〈N) probabilities also obey master equations and under which the Ursell functions decay to their equilibrium values faster than the probability distributions. These conditions impose restrictions on the form of the transition rate matrix and thus on the form of its eigenfunctions. We first consider systems in which the eigenfunctions of theN-particle transition rate matrix are completely factorized and demonstrate that for such systems, the reduced probabilities obey master equations and the Ursell functions decay rapidly if certain additional conditions are imposed. As an example of such a system, we discuss a random walk ofN pairwise interacting walkers. We then demonstrate that for systems whoseN-particle transition matrix can be written as a sum of one-particle, two-particle, etc. contributions, and for which the reduced probabilities obey master equations, the reduced master equations become, in the thermodynamic limit, those for independent particles, which have been discussed by us previously. As an example of suchN-particle systems, we discuss the relaxation of a gas of interacting harmonic oscillators.

Notes: Abstract Any ensemble of random walks with symmetric transition probabilities will have symmetric properties. However, any single realization of such a random walk may be asymmetric. In an earlier paper, Weiss and Weissman developed a measure of asymmetry and applied it to random walks in the absence of a field, showing that the degree of asymmetry (in the diffusion limit) is independent of time and that the most probable degree of asymmetry corresponds to the maximum possible. We show in the present paper how the presence of a symmetric field can change this result, both in making the degree of asymmetry depend on time, and driving the random walk toward a more symmetric state.

Notes: Abstract We investigate the random walk properties of a class of two-dimensional lattices with two different types of columns and discuss the dependence of the properties on the densities and detailed arrangements of the columns. We show that the row and column components of the mean square displacement are asymptotically independent of the details of the arrangement of columns. We reach the same conclusion for some other random walk properties (return to the origin and number of distinct sites visited) for various periodic arrangements of a given relative density of the two types of columns. We also derive exact asymptotic results for the occupation probabilities of the two types of distinct sites on our lattices which validate the basic conjecture on bond and step ratios made in the preceding paper in this series.
