Description / Table of Contents:
Notes:
Summary Following ingrowth of fibroblasts and capillaries a basal membrane is formed in previous graft lumen. After 8 weeks, increasing endothelialization of the graft of a canine artery is found starting from the ends. Revitalization of the graft is limited to a rim of 2 – 3.5 cm next to the arterial anastomosis. Degenerative changes occur in the remaining graft segment with time. In tracheal replacement the graft is covered by microvillous cells after 4 to 5 months. With cell metaplasia, ciliated epithelia and goblet cells develop after 8 months. With passing time, the graft is totally revitalized.
