    Notes: The dynamics and noise of a dc superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) with the McCumber parameter βc=2πR2IcC/Φ0 close to the unity (where Ic, R, C are the critical current, the shunt resistance, and the capacitance of the Josephson junctions comprising the SQUID, respectively, and Φ0=2.07×10−15 Wb is the magnetic flux quantum) integrated with a planar spiral input coil have been experimentally studied. The length of the spiral input coil was chosen to match its λ/4 microwave resonance frequency to the plasma resonance frequency of the SQUID. The input coil resonance enhances the overall quality factor Q of the Josephson oscillations in the SQUID and, as a result, increases the dynamic resistance Rd and the gradient of the flux-to-voltage characteristics ∂V/∂Φ without hysteresis. This relaxes the tolerance for the βc parameter, simplifies the technological process, and improves the yield of devices. A dc SQUID with loop inductance L=31.4 pH, βc=0.72, and a six turn input coil has demonstrated a nondistorted quasisinusoidal flux-to-voltage transfer function with an exceptionally large modulation depth of approximately 140 μV peak-to-peak. A spectral density of the intrinsic magnetic flux noise as low as 3.5×10−7 Φ0/Hz1/2 has been measured in the double stage configuration at a temperature of 4.2 K using direct read-out electronics. This corresponds to the intrinsic energy resolution of ε=12.5h. In combination with an intermediary transformer, the current resolution of the SQUID is as low as 1.25 pA/Hz1/2 with an input coil inductance of 58 nH. The coupled energy resolution is εc=45h in the white noise region. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: We present two oscillator designs and a new amplification design which improves many characteristics of the dual-discharge tube tunable ArF excimer laser. We demonstrate bandwidths from 0.17–11.0 cm−1 (5–330 GHz) can be selected by appropriate choice of oscillator slit width and diffraction-grating dispersion. Amplification is achieved using three consecutive passes through the discharge tubes. This amplifier design decreases divergence (9×diffraction limit) and increases output energy (33%), locking efficiency (20%), range of tunability (40%), and spectral brightness (two orders-of-magnitude) when compared to the standard unstable-resonator amplifier.

    Notes: Abstract: Gangliosides, phospholipids, and cholesterol of human glioma (12-18) and fetal neural cells (CH) were analyzed at specified cell densities, from sparse to confluent. Total ganglioside sialic acid, phospholipid phosphorus, and cholesterol increased in the glioma cells on a per cell, mg protein, or mg total lipid basis two- to threefold as cell density increased 25-fold. These same three constituents in the fetal cells increased with cell density on a per cell and mg protein basis but not on a per mg total lipid basis. In glioma cells, the di- and trisialogangliosides (GD2+ GDlb+ GT1) increased from 1–2% of total ganglioside sialic acid at sparse densities to 7–8% at intermediate (logarithmic phase) densities to 10–13% at confluent densities. The set of simpler gangliosides (GM4+ GM3+ GM2) decreased from 50% of total ganglioside sialic acid at sparse glioma cell densities, to 36% at intermediate and 30% at confluent densities. In the fetal neural cells, the set of gangliosides (GM4+ GM3+ GM2) had about 48% of total ganglioside sialic acid in both sparse and confluent preparations. The fetal cells were twofold higher in GM3 (32.4 ± 2.1%) than the glioma cells (16.8 ± 1.6%), but lower in GMt (9.1 ± 0.9% versus 18.2 ± 1.8%), cell densities notwithstanding. Confluent cell preparations of both cell lines were consistently higher in ethanolamine plasmalogen than sparse cells. We conclude that in these two neural cell lines quantitative changes in ganglioside and phospholipid species occurred correlatively as cell densities increased. Higher glioma cell densities were associated with greater proportions of complex ganglioside species. These changes in cell membrane constituents during growth may result from cell contact and may indicate a role for them in cell growth regulation and/or differentiation.

    Notes: Giant magnetoresistance (GMR) of CoNiCu/Cu multilayers grown by electrodeposition was measured as a function of the copper layer thickness and effects of the order of 14% were obtained. The copper layer thickness ranged from 0.7 to 3.5 nm. Two peaks in the magnetoresistance were observed. One was centered at a copper thickness of ∼1.0 nm and the second was centered at ∼2.3 nm. Comparison of the field dependence of the magnetoresistance with the field dependence of the magnetization, as determined by vibrating-sample magnetometer, suggests that the saturation field for GMR and the magnetization are similar for the larger copper thicknesses, but are strikingly different near 1.0 nm copper thickness. This observation suggests that the GMR is affected by different factors depending on the thickness of the copper layer.

    Notes: A modified hollow-bore ridge waveguide, utilizing a staggered ridge geometry, has been used successfully to obtain single-frequency operation from an array of CO2 waveguide lasers. The gain volume of the array is equivalent to six waveguide lasers of 37 cm length and 2.25×2.25 mm2 cross section. The output power from the sealed-off device reached 68 W cw. Stable single-frequency operation in the antisymmetric supermode was observed.

    Notes: Glutamate in excessive amounts is a major contributor to neuronal degeneration, and its removal is attributed mainly to astrocytes. Traumatic injury to the central nervous system (CNS) is often accompanied by disappearance of astrocytes from the lesion site and failure of the remaining cells to withstand the ensuing toxicity. Microglia that repopulate the lesion site are the usual suspects for causing redox imbalance and inflammation and thus further exacerbating the neurotoxicity. However, our group recently demonstrated that early post-injury activation of microglia as antigen-presenting cells correlates with an ability to withstand injurious conditions. Moreover, we found that T cells reactive to CNS-specific self-antigens protected neurons against glutamate toxicity. Here, we show that antigen-specific autoimmune T cells, by tailoring the microglial phenotype, can increase the ability of microglia-enriched cultures to remove glutamate. This T-cell-mediated effect could not be achieved by the potent microglia-activating agent lipopolysaccharide (LPS), but was dose-dependently reproduced by the Th1 cytokine interferon (IFN)-γ and significantly reduced by neutralizing anti-IFN-γ antibodies. Under the same conditions, IFN-γ had no effect on cultured astrocytes. Up-regulation of glutamate uptake induced by IFN-γ activation was not accompanied by the acute inflammatory response seen in LPS-activated cultures. These findings suggest that T cells or their cytokines can cause microglia to adopt a phenotype that facilitates rather than impairs glutamate clearance, possibly contributing to restoration of homeostasis.
