    Notizen: Optical test-particle diagnostics based on laser induced fluorescence are typically performed in the regime of weak optical pumping or in the regime of a short tagging pulse. In such cases, it is usually possible to construct a linear transfer function to describe the effect of tag-beam optical pumping on search beam fluorescence. The regime where particle dynamics plays a role in the optical pumping and laser induced fluorescence processes is explored. In this new regime, the diagnostic signal is nonlinearly related to the pump beam amplitude, and it becomes necessary to consider the time-dependent process of optical pumping on each particle orbit. The possibilities of techniques based on this extension are illustrated by a simple example which shows how ion Fokker–Planck diffusion can be measured with a single laser beam. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

    Notizen: The method of cyclotron wave transmission for measuring the electron parallel momentum distribution is studied in a lower-hybrid driven tokamak plasma. Questions of resolution, sensitivity, and technique are addressed. Measurements are made of the suprathermal distribution produced by current drive as well as the incremental changes in the distribution function produced by short pulses of lower-hybrid waves. The results indicate that cyclotron wave transmission is well suited for studies of electron velocity space phenomena and may be used to detect the effect of diagnostic perturbations. This research was supported by the U. S. Department of Energy.

    Notizen: A two-chord, four-beam suprathermal electron diagnostic has been installed on TdeV (B〉1.5 T, R=0.86 m, a=0.25 m). Resonant absorption of extraordinary mode electron cyclotron waves is measured to deduce the chordal averaged suprathermal electron distribution function amplitude at the resonant momentum. Simultaneously counterpropagating beams permit good refractive loss cancellation. A nonlinear frequency sweep leads to a concentration of appropriately propagating power in a narrow range of time of flight, thus increasing the signal-to-noise ratio and facilitating the rejection of spurious reflections. Numerous measurements of electron distribution functions have been obtained during lower-hybrid current-drive experiments. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

    Notizen: Electrostatic ion cyclotron wave fields are determined in a magnetized and weakly collisional plasma. A phased-locked Laser Induced Fluorescence (LIF) diagnostic is used to directly measure the wave perturbed ion velocity distribution. Comparing these local LIF measurements with a theoretical model uniquely determines the wave parameters, such as the wave potential, the three-dimensional wave vector, and the effective wave damping. The self-consistent wave–particle interaction is modeled by Boltzmann–Poisson equations in the limit of weak collisions. The wave parameters determined from local measurements agree with those determined from spatial scans. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notizen: Dispersion relations for ion-acoustic-like waves in plasmas with and without superthermal particles are calculated using a simple pole expansion of the distribution function for the ions. It is found that slow weakly damped modes exist in two-temperature plasmas, and the conditions when these modes appear are investigated. For plasmas with equal ion and electron temperatures weakly damped modes are found when there is a depletion of the high-energy tails. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notizen: Detailed measurements of the ion velocity distribution function are used to test representations of the electrostatic degrees of freedom of slightly non-Maxwellian plasmas. It is found that fluid theory does not describe the data very well because there exist multiple closely spaced kinetic electrostatic modes. New wave branches appear that theoretically should persist as weakly damped modes even with Te∼Ti. Both a sum over discrete dispersion relations and the Case–Van Kampen spectral representation can be used to provide working descriptions of the data, but the latter has certain advantages. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

    Notizen: Direct experimental determination of terms in the ion kinetic equation is used to address the question of ion dynamics in low-frequency electrostatic structures. Problems in quantitative laser-induced florescence in plasmas are addressed, especially the problem of the relative metastable fraction. In addition to determining terms in the ion kinetic equation and the plasma electric field, the measurements determine the energy-dependent cross section for metastable quenching. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notizen: The onset of chaotic ion dynamics in electrostatic waves is investigated in a linear magnetized plasma. The existence of a threshold for heating in agreement with the predictions of single particle Hamiltonian theories and the fast time scale for velocity space diffusion are observed in the experiment. Measurements of test-particle dynamics indicate an exponential separation of initially close ion trajectories for amplitudes above the heating threshold. Ion orbits in the different wave–particle interaction regimes are inferred using an optical tagging diagnostic method, which provides the two point correlation function in phase space.

    Notizen: A "two-parallel-temperature'' feature of the fast-electron distribution function has been observed during lower-hybrid current-drive experiments on the Versator-II tokamak (B. Richards, Ph.D. thesis, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, 1981). Computational modeling predicts this feature and indicates that the colder tail is initiated by low-power, high-N(parallel) waves from the sidelobes of the antenna N(parallel) spectrum. The modeling indicates these waves bridge the "spectral gap,'' enabling current drive even though the wave parallel phase velocity greatly exceeds the electron thermal velocity for the majority of the wave power.

    Notizen: Direct excitation and propagation of ion Bernstein waves from low-impedance current-carrying loop antennas in the ion cyclotron frequency range are studied over a range of plasma and antenna parameters. The dependence of wave coupling efficiency on plasma density and on wave frequency and parallel wavelength is obtained from measurements of wave amplitude and variations in antenna impedance. Comparisons are made to a simple nonuniform warm-plasma model of the coupling problem. Generally good agreement is found between theory and experiment. As a result, some guidelines are proposed concerning antenna design.
