Notes: The maximum-entropy method (MEM) for structure determination is applied on the plastically crystalline phases of KOH and KOD characterized by delocalized H+ or D+ ions in a simple rock salt structure. The structure factors measured by neutron diffraction already give a consistent picture of the hydrogen distribution by conventional Fourier and modelling methods, which helps to understand the merit of the MEM. Owing to the negative sign of the scattering length of hydrogen, the MEM can, in a limited sense `model free', separate off the hydrogen density distribution. It is found, however, that the MEM cannot be applied naively for these compounds and reasons are given why the uniform density as a priori information has to be given up in the present case. The a priori information procedure to be used is discussed. In addition, and perhaps unexpectedly, the deuterium density is also obtained.

Notes: Abstract We report on specific heat measurements of (La1−x Ce x )Al2 samples, with 1.5 a/o≦x≦100 a/o, performed in magnetic fields of up to 5 T between 0.3 and 10 K. In the Ce rich alloys, and especially in CeAl2, aλ-type peak of an antiferromagnetic phase transition, and at lower temperatures spin waves and very large electronic contributions are clearly visible. In higher magnetic fields, that is when antiferromagnetic order can be suppressed, the specific heat of the alloys exhibits a broadened Schottky peak. All these phenomena add up tok ln 2, i.e. to the correct entropy change per single Ce3+ ion in itsΓ 7 crystal field ground state. We interpret experimental results as an interplay between cooperative magnetism and the single-ion Kondo effect which describes a gradual turning off of one magnetic moment. The broadening of the Schottky peak is directly related to the Kondo temperatureT K , which we determine with a simple “resonance level model”.T K increases by an order of magnitude whenx increases from 1.5 a/o to 100 a/o. This is interpreted as caused by a lattice contraction. A quadraticx dependence of the Néel temperature suggests that (forT≲T K ) stable Ce moments can only exist through pair interactions. The very large (and almost field independent) specific heat term linear in temperature with a coefficientγ=135 mJ/K2 mole for CeAl2 is attributed to the Kondo effect—still present in the antiferromagnetically ordered state. Our evaluation of the experimental data is backed by a molecular field theory for a simplified antiferromagnetic structure combined with the simplest possible Kondo theory.

Notes: Abstract. We introduce new fast canonical local algorithms for discrete and continuous spin systems. We show that for a broad selection of spin systems they compare favorably to the known ones except for the Ising $\pm$ 1 spins. The new procedures use discretization scheme and the necessary information have to be stored in computer memory before the simulation. The models for testing discrete spins are the Ising $\pm$ 1, the general Ising S or Blume-Capel model, the Potts and the clock models. The continuous spins we examine are the O(N) models, including the continuous Ising model (N = 1), the $\phi^4$ Ising model (N = 1), the XY model (N = 2), the Heisenberg model (N = 3), the $\phi^4$ Heisenberg model (N = 3), the O(4) model with applications to the SU(2) lattice gauge theory, and the general O(N) vector spins with $N\ge5$ .

Notes: Abstract An expression for the free energy of thes-d-exchange Hamiltonian for the caseS=1/2 is derived using Tomonaga's model for the description of the free electrons. Thereby a formal equivalence can be established to the thermodynamics of a classical gas of charged particles distributed on a ring with alternating charges interacting via a log sin-potential. Although we are unable to calculate the free energy in a closed form, the result clearly indicates that as the exchange interaction changes sign the behavior of the free energy is changed significantly for low temperatures.

Notes: Abstract We investigate the screening behavior of a neutral one dimensional plasma made up by two types of charges not necessarily of equal values. The thermodynamic potential is given by the lowest eigenvalue of a generalized Mathieu equation. If the latter is interpreted as a Schrödinger equation, the dielectric constant is related in a simple manner to the band mass of the lowest energy band. We calculate this mass with the W.K.B. method and study the correlation function for a pair of test charges.

Notes: Abstract We study the critical behavior of frustrated systems by means of the Padé-Borel resummed three-loop renormalization group expansions and numerical Monte Carlo simulations. Amazingly, for six-component spins, where the transition is second-order, both approaches disagree. This unusual situation is analyzed both from the point of view of the convergence of the resummed series and from the possible relevance of nonperturbative effects.

Notes: Abstract An unusual peak has been found by Müller et al. for the attenuation of longitudinal sound as a function of temperature around 12 K for UPt3. Breathing mode coupling of the volume strain to the electronic energy states of a narrow band of high density at the fermi energy seems to be the origin of this peak.
