Notes: Critical exponents for a one-dimensional general continuous Ising model with long-range ferromagnetic interactions decaying as 1/r1+σ are calculated using a histogram Monte Carlo technique. A continuous Ising model means that a spin can take any value between −1 and 1. The critical point behavior is investigated. It is found that the system exhibits a second-order phase transition with nonstandard critical exponents; the singularities in the specific heat and susceptibility depend on σ. For σ=1, there are extremely weak finite size effects: the first-order and the second-order cumulants of the order parameter yield ν=2.42(1). The susceptibility exponent γ=2.259(9). Results for σ=0.7 will be shown and discussed. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: : The effects of high-pressure processing (HPP), CO2-assisted high-pressure processing (HPP + CO2), and thermal processing on the chemical and physical properties of single-strength Valencia orange juice were evaluated over 4 mo of storage at 4 and 30 °C. The HPP + CO2 juice had the greatest cloud stability and highest ascorbic acid retention. Volatile compound losses were lowest in the HPP juice and lower in the HPP + CO2 juice compared to the thermally processed juice (p 〈 0.05). HPP + CO2 produced a cloud-stable orange juice with more ascorbic acid and flavor volatiles than thermally processed juice (p 〈 0.05).

Notes: Abstract We study Baxter's corner transfer matrices for anisotropic Ising models of finite size. They are related to spin one-half chains with coefficients which increase linearly along the chain. The operators are diagonalised with the help of special polynomials and the eigenvalue spectrum is discussed. The relation to the infinite lattice limit is outlined.

Notes: Abstract We investigate the screening behavior of a neutral one dimensional plasma made up by two types of charges not necessarily of equal values. The thermodynamic potential is given by the lowest eigenvalue of a generalized Mathieu equation. If the latter is interpreted as a Schrödinger equation, the dielectric constant is related in a simple manner to the band mass of the lowest energy band. We calculate this mass with the W.K.B. method and study the correlation function for a pair of test charges.

Notes: Abstract We consider a general kinetic model for a chain of three-state Potts spins. From the time-evolution operator we infer points in two-dimensional Potts systems where certain spin correlations have one-dimensional character and the model is exactly solvable. This occurs in square lattice models with different kinds of competing interactions.

Notes: Summary The optimisation of chromatographic parameters is studied. The Window Diagram and Overlapping Resolution Map (ORM) methods are compared. The latter is developed to take into account the spot diameter and the average plate height variations with the development distance, in order to improve the reliability of the method.

Notes: Summary The authors study the mobility of some aromatic acids on thin layers of silica gel as a function either of water content of sulphuric acid-water mixtures or of formic acid solutions (water or diethyleneglycolmonoethylether) creating the chromatographic tank atmosphere. They try to demonstrate the competition for active sites on the silica gel between aromatic acids and the conditioning agents of thin layer (water, formic acid). These researches helped to find an efficient method for the separation of some aromatic acids.

Notes: Abstract We study two-dimensional Ising systems at the critical point. Using conformal considerations we derive the spectrum of low-lying eigenvalues of Baxter's corner transfer matrix. Its relation to the spectrum of the usual transfer matrix, its scaling properties and the way the conformal anomaly enters, are discussed.

Notes: Abstract Within the framework of a Ginzburg-Landau theory for a scalar order parameter, we discuss the effect of the presence of twinning planes on the behavior of the upper critical field as function of the temperature. In particular we study the case of a finite array of planes in the region of weak magnetic field, both from the analytical and the numerical point of view.

Notes: Abstract We study ice models as possible realizations for lattice versions of the Dirac equation. The starting point of this analysis is the close connection between the two dimensional ice model of Lieb and the Thirring model of massive fermions in (1+1) dimensions.
