Notizen: Evaluation method of nano-scale internal cracks by ultrasonic atomic force microscopy (UAFM) is proposed based on two approaches. The first one is a linear vibration analysis of the contact stiffness calculated from a finite element method analysis of a model including a subsurface gap. The second one is a nonlinear vibration analysis of a stiffening or softening spring representing the opening-and-closing behavior of the gap. These methods were verified by obtaining the resonance frequency mapping, the load dependence of the resonance frequency and the resonance spectra in UAFM on a subsurface gap in highly oriented pyrolytic graphite. As a result, it was proved that the proposed method is useful for evaluating the opening-and-closing behavior of the gap. Although the present study is focused on a nano-scale gap, this method is applicable to larger scale cracks using a larger tip and more stiff support than those used in AFM

Notizen: Detection of hydrogen gas is a crucial task for establishing safety and reliability of fuelcells, a key technology for the environment and our society. However, hydrogen is difficult to detectand various hydrogen sensors have many drawbacks. Here we report a novel hydrogen gas sensor, the ball surface acoustic wave (SAW) sensor, using Pd or PdNi sensitive film. The ball SAW sensoris based on a novel phenomenon, diffraction-free propagation of collimated beam along an equatorof sphere. The resultant ultra-multiple roundtrips of SAW makes it possible to achieve highestsensitivity among SAW sensors. Moreover, it enables to use a very thin sensitive film, andconsequently the shortest response time (2s) was realized. In terms of the sensing range, it has thewidest range of 10 ppm to 100 % among any hydrogen sensors including FET or resistivity sensors. The ball SAW sensor can be applied not only to hydrogen but also to any gasses and possibly toliquids

Notizen: Abstract Surface damage in sapphire crystals was effected by static and sliding contact and then observed using a scanning electron microscope in both the cathodoluminescence and secondary electron modes. It was found that enhanced luminescence appeared at the area of contact damage, and that the lumincescence observed might have been associated with point defects generated during the plastic deformation process. The cathodoluminescence images of sliding damage correlated well with the characteristic frictional properties of sapphire crystals.

Notizen: A New technique for the rapid measurement of ultrasonic absorption with a sampling interval of 5 msec has been developed and applied to the kinetic study of denaturation and subsequant redution of hen egg-white lysozyme. The lysozyme is denatured by guanidine hydrochloride (GuHCl) orLiBr, and afetr denaturation by GuHCl, its disulfide bonds are reduced by dithiothreitol (DTT). The ultrasonic adsorption coefficient at 9 MHz increases with denaturation but decreases with reduction. The rate constant of denaturation by GuHCl obtained from the rime variance of ultasonic agrees well with that from uv absorption and optical rotation. The time variance if absorption after GuHCl and Dtt have been simultaneously added exhibits two rate constants. Analysis of the constants as functions of regeant concentrations indicates that the intermediates state between native and reduced states is not necessarily the completely denatured state but depends on the concentartions of GuHCl and DTT.
