Notizen: Summary The reasons for the interest in the rheology of wood and the favoured lines of research are stated. The response of wood can often be predicted adequately on the basis of previous studies but notable gaps remain in our knowledge. Future research should avoid going over well trodden ground and should concentrate on filling some of the gaps listed. The factor of greatest importance is the interaction of load with change in moisture content. International cooperation in rheological research on wood would be of great benefit.

Notizen: Summary The effects of creep at constant conditions of moisture content and the effects of deformations occurring during cycling of moisture content have been studied in loaded beams of particleboard and hardboard. The variations in stiffness in loaded and unloaded beams of particleboard during moisture cycling were also determined. Contrary to the findings of some workers but in agreement with the findings of another, the increases in the deflections of loaded beams of particleboard during cycling of moisture content were due mainly to desorption of moisture. Qualitatively similar behaviour was found for particleboard, hardboard and wood but quantitatively the effects were greatest in particleboard and hardboard. It appears that the basic mechanism of the transient effects in bending, arising with the simultaneous action of load and change in moisture content, may be similar in wood, particleboard and hardboard.

Notizen: [Auszug] RECENTLY it was reported1 that creep in wooden beams was markedly increased when their moisture content changed while they were under load. In addition, it was found (Gottstein, J. W., Moglia, P. J., and Stashevski, A., private communication) that if veneers were bent to a predetermined extent and ...

Notizen: [Auszug] To explore this further, small beams of f-in. square cross-section were cut from billets of three species, namely, Eucalyptus regnans (a hardwood prone to collapse of the cell wall during seasoning), Eucalyptus pilularis (a hardwood with very little tendency to collapse), and Pinus radiata (a ...

Notizen: The venous system of the canine brain was investigated by gross dissection and by radiographs. The system was divided into four major groups of vessels: cerebral veins, central veins, cerebellar veins, and pontomedullary veins. The dorsal cerebral veins emptied into the dorsal sagittal sinus and the ventral cerebral veins entered the dorsal petrosal or transverse sinus. The internal system of cerebral veins, and the central veins, were drained by the great cerebral vein which entered the straight sinus. Cerebellar and pontomedullary veins flowed mainly to the sigmoid sinus. The venous system of the dog differed from the human configuration in several ways. In the dog the major dorsal cerebral veins entered the dorsal sagittal sinus by independent lacunae in the same direction as the flow of blood. A middle cerebral vein was not present in the dog but was replaced by a continuation of the caudal ventral cerebral vein. There was a basal vein in the dog but its main flow of blood was to the dorsal petrosal sinus; in man, this vein passes to the great cerebral vein. The entire venous system of the brain was plexiform and collateral circulation was prominent. The larger veins were identified radiographically.
