Notes: Summary To assess the potential of an infectious Sindbis virus vector (dsSIN) as a eukaryotic expression vector, dsSIN recombinants which contain each of the rubella virus (RUB) structural proteins (C, E2, and E1) individually were constructed. Expression of the RUB proteins by each dsSIN recombinant was robust and processing was similar to that observed when these proteins were expressed using other vectors. The C and E2 recombinants, each of which contains a cassette of less than 1000 nts, were stable through low multiplicity amplification; however, the E1 recombinant, which contains a 1700 nt cassette, was not. Therefore, use of the E1 recombinant is restricted to stock derived from the original transfection. The replication rate of dsSIN and the C and E2 recombinants was similar, however, the replication rate of the E1 recombinant was slower. No phenotypic mixing of any of the RUB proteins in recombinant dsSIN virions could be detected.

Notes: Abstract Hybrid organic-inorganic composites were prepared by precipitating silica into hydroxypolybenzoxazole (HPBO) and sulfopolybenzobisthiazole (SPBT) polymers, with interfacial bonding between the phases improved by use of isocyanatopropyltriethoxy silane and N, N-diethylaminopropyltrimethoxy silane, respectively. The materials were transparent, and scanning electron micrographs indicated a uniform distribution of silica particles of domain sizes less than 1 μm. Values of the tensile modulus and tensile strength of the HPBO-silica composites were found to increase with the silica content. Values of the modulus of the SPBT-silica composites also increased in this manner, but the improvements in tensile strength were nearly independent of the amount of silica. The composites exhibited thermal decomposition temperatures of approximately 400–500°C, and the thermal stability was significantly increased for both HPBO and SPBT materials with increase in silica content. The water absorption amount for both types of composites decreased significantly compared to that of the pure polymers, suggesting excellent weatherability.

Notes: Abstract Urease was covalently immobilized onto porous chitosan beads via primary amine groups connected to the backbone via a six-carbon linear alkyl spacer. The optimum conditions for enzyme immobilization are activating the beads with 1%(w/w) glutaraldehyde, reacting the activated beads in pH 7 buffer with the enzyme, using an enzyme to bead weight ratio of 25, and without lyophilization. Chitosan-bound urease was found to fully retain its specific activity. Properties of the immobilized urease were characterized under batch and flow conditions. Increased optimum reaction temperature, enhanced thermal stability and storage stability, and excellent reusability were found after enzyme immobilization. Continuous hydrolysis of urea solution was studied in a column packed with the enzyme-containing beads for its possible application in regenerating dialysate solution during hemodialysis.

Notes: Abstract Using the Ward-Takahashi identity, on-shell condition, bound Dirac equation and off-shell expansion, a reduced version of half off-shell virtual photon nucleon vertex has been suggested. The vertex are decomposed into several different order terms: the on-shell terms, first and second off-shell terms. The off-shell behaviour of the form factors is discussed in the one meson loop model. Using the reduced vertex and parametrized off-shell form factors the quasielastic response functions are calculated for several nuclei at ¦q¦–kf and for56Fe at large ¦q¦ up to 1.14 GeV/c and at −q2=0.9 (GeV/c)2. The Coulomb sums are evaluated and a comparison of the theoretical prediction with data is given. The off-shell electron nucleon cross section is calculated and compared with the “cc1” off-shell extrapolation.

Notes: The enthalpy-infrared frequency shift correlation for simple acids and bases is extended to study hydrogen bonding in polymer systems. The acidity of a polymer is calibrated by comparing the shifts in hydroxyl absorption frequency of the acidic polymer when mixed with a series of bases with the corresponding spectral shifts of known acids with the same bases. The basicity of a polymer is calibrated by measuring the hydroxyl frequency shifts of known acids when mixed with the basic polymer. For polymers containing carbonyl groups, the shift in carbonyl absorption is also a measure of basicity. The acidity and basicity constants obtained for polymers are in good agreement with the values for small-molecule analogs. The enthalpies of hydrogen bond formation in polymer mixtures are calculated from the acidity or basicity constants.
