    Notes: Falling films on inclined planes display surface and shear instability modes, the latter being important at small angles β of inclination of the plane. These modes are analyzed with particular attention paid to the effects of surface tension. The results show that the critical Reynolds number of the shear mode is nonmonotonic in either the angle β or the surface-tension parameter ζ but displays a local minimum at nonzero values of β and ζ. For large Reynolds number, an analysis shows that the shear mode is inviscidly stable, but that the surface mode is unstable.

    Notes: The steady thermocapillary flow of nonvolatile layers, nonuniformly heated from below, is examined. The interactions among viscous forces, thermocapillarity, and hydrostatic effects give rise to the steady-state dimpling of the interface. The steady dimpling of nonuniformly heated silicone–oil layers with mean thicknesses ranging from 0.125 to 1.684 mm is studied experimentally. The temperature distribution in the substrate is monitored by thermocouples and the interface shapes by a mechanical impedance probe. Measured steady shapes and theoretical predictions agree within 20% for moderate heating when the film is not close to rupture. When the heating rate causes the film to "dry out'' above the hottest point on the substrate, the long-wave theory delivers a parametric index, involving thermocapillary and hydrostatic effects, which is an excellent predictor of rupture. Nonlinear long-wave theories of the type discussed here have never been tested experimentally, until now. The confirmation of this thermocapillary theory is suggestive of the validity of the previous long-wave analysis [Phys. Fluids A 2, 313 (1990)] of unsteady, evaporating/condensing liquid layers.

    Notes: The linear stability of the two-layer flow of immiscible, incompressible fluids in an inclined channel is considered. In the long-wave limit, mechanisms for linear instability, and the consequences of competition between mechanisms, are identified. For arbitrary wave numbers, air–water and olive oil–water systems are considered, in order to determine the influence of the channel thickness and the mean interfacial height on the stability of the flow. This paper characterizes those physical situations in which the primary instability is to long-wave interfacial disturbances. The odd Orr–Sommerfeld shear mode within the water layer, which is necessarily stable in plane Poiseuille flow, is found to grow and even be the dominant mode of instability for the olive oil–water system. The consequences beyond linear stability are discussed. © 1994 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: A two-dimensional volatile liquid droplet on a uniformly heated horizontal surface is considered. Lubrication theory is used to describe the effects of capillarity, thermocapillarity, vapor recoil, viscous spreading, contact-angle hysteresis, and mass loss on the behavior of the droplet. A new contact-line condition based on mass balance is formulated and used, which represents a leading-order superposition of spreading and evaporative effects. Evolution equations for steady and unsteady droplet profiles are found and solved for small and large capillary numbers. In the steady evaporation case, the steady contact angle, which represents a balance between viscous spreading effects and evaporative effects, is larger than the advancing contact angle. This new angle is also observed over much of the droplet lifetime during unsteady evaporation. Further, in the unsteady case, effects which tend to decrease (increase) the contact angle promote (delay) evaporation. In the "large'' capillary number limit, matched asymptotics are used to describe the droplet profile; away from the contact line the shape is determined by initial conditions and bulk mass loss, while near the contact-line surface curvature and slip are important. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Abstract A general structure for discrete, multistage chemical processes is formulated so that a large class of possible process structures result from the variation of a finite set of structure variables.     Notes: Water rivulets are produced on inclined flat plates made of high-density polyethylene, Mylar, Plexiglas and acetate film. Conditions are obtained for straight rivulets to begin to meander and for measuring rivulets to cease their unsteadiness. These critical conditions are correlated using a one-dimensional theory of high Reynolds number slender rivulets in which pressure gradients generated by curvature, surface tensionand contact-angle hysteresis balance.
