    Notes: The time elvers of the American eel, Anguilla rostrata, spend in an estuary prior to their migration into fresh water was assessed. A distinct mark was formed on elvers' otoliths during their first 2 to 3 weeks in the river estuary. This mark was used to distinguish between growth in fresh water and in salt water. Migrating eels collected at a falls 4 km from the estuary exhibited bimodal length and weight distributions. Frequency distributions showed that eels collected in the estuary were smaller and had smaller otoliths than eels collected at the falls, indicating that elvers do not reach the falls in the same year as they enter the estuary. The three modal groups most probably represent three age–classes. However, the otoliths of elvers collected in the estuary had only the mark of transition whereas eels in the first and second mode at the falls usually had two rings (1–4) and four rings (3–6) per otolith, respectively, in addition to the mark of transition, as viewed under SEM. The possibility that ring formation is not annual means that the use of otoliths for the age determination of eels in this study has not been validated.

    Notes: Abstract –  The objectives of this study were, first, to assess the usefulness of otolith microstructure analysis to examine winter size-selective mortality of young-of-the-year (YOY) Atlantic salmon and, secondly, to validate various hypotheses relating to the dynamics of two populations with different winter survival. By examining otolith microstructure, we back-calculated body size at hatching and at emergence of YOY salmon sampled in fall 2000 and in early summer 2001 on the Petite Cascapédia River and the Bonaventure River (Québec, Canada). The results of the study did not reveal any size-selective mortality of YOY salmon in the Petite Cascapédia River, while in the Bonaventure River, size-selective mortality of the smaller individuals of the cohort was detected. This case study allowed not only a better comprehension of the population dynamics of those rivers but demonstrated the usefulness of otolith analysis to detect winter size-selective mortality under a natural environment.

    Notes: Abstract –  The suitability of using regional Habitat Quality Index (HQI) models for predicting distributions of juvenile salmon (Salmo salar L.) was examined using data acquired from selected rivers within Québec, Canada. Regional HQI models were derived by identifying preferences of salmon fry and parr for the habitat properties of flow velocity, water column depth and granulometric index (an index of substrate size) for groups of rivers. These were compared with local HQI models, derived from preferences for habitat properties within individual rivers. Relationships between HQI values and densities of juvenile salmon were established through the use of nonlinear regression. In all cases, the regional HQI models were less effective for explaining distributions of juvenile salmon than local HQI models based on individual rivers. Regional HQI models were relatively ineffective when the habitat characteristics of the river to which they were applied differed greatly from the characteristics of the other rivers within the region. It is inferred that the relationship between the effectiveness of the regional HQI model and the difference in characteristics between individual rivers and those of the region may be used in an a priori determination of whether a regional HQI may be applied effectively to any given river.

    Notes: The inconsistent use of the term “erythema annulare centrifugum” has created confusion, in that it has been applied to a group of distinct diseases as if they were a single condition. The literature becomes more ambiguous when different names are given to annular eruptions that have a similar pathogenesis. We present two neonates who presented at birth with similar diffuse erythematous annular eruptions, but differed in their serologic and histopathologic findings. The first child was otherwise healthy and had normal laboratories findings that excluded both infectious and autoimmune diseases. His biopsy showed a perivascular and interstitial infiltrate throughout the entire dermis that was composed of lymphocytes, histiocytes and numerous eosinophils. The second neonate had elevated anti-Ro and anti-La antibodies, thrombocytopenia and a non-anion gap metabolic acidosis. His biopsy showed focal vacuolar degeneration of the basal layer. There was a perivascular and interstitial infiltrate that extended throughout the dermis which consisted primarily of nuclear debris. Within the cytoplasm of the few intact histiocytes and neutrophils, were hematoxylin bodies, giving these cells the appearance of LE cells. We discuss the clinical and histopathological findings in these two neonates and attempt to clarify the nomenclature pertaining to the annular erythemas.

    Notes: Abstract Epifluorescence microscopy was used to analyze the stomach contents of bivalve larvae collected in the Baie des Chaleurs (western Gulf of St. Lawrence, Canada) in order to document food-particle sizes, compare feeding among taxa, and compare the diet with the in situ phytoplankton community. Stomach contents were mainly composed of small autotrophic flagellates (〈5 μm) and cyanobacteria (〈2 μm), reflecting the microbial food web which characterizes these waters. More than half (55%) of all veligers examined contained algal cells of 5 to 15 μm, whereas only 3% had cells of 15 to 25 μm. Differences in the size ranges of ingested algal cells among similar-sized larvae of different species suggests that veligers actively selected food particles. Among the smallest veligers (185 to 260 μm), scallops (Placopecten magellicanus) and mussels (Mytilus edulis) ingested more 〈5 μm and 5 to 15 μm algae than clams (Mya arenaria). Among larger veligers (261 to 405 μm), clams contained significantly more 〈5 μm cells than mussels, whereas mussels contained significantly more 5 to 15 μm algae than clams. Algal cells of 15 to 25 μm were preferentially ingested by mussel veligers. Feeding also differed between different-sized veligers within taxa, i.e. the smallest clam veligers ingested fewer of 5 to 15 μm algae than the larger size classes. Mussel veligers ingested significantly more 15 to 25 μm and fewer 〈5 μm cells as their size increased. The dominance of ultraplankton in the nearshore waters of Baie des Chaleurs and in the stomach contents suggests that veliger larvae may be an important export path for carbon produced by small phytoplankton.

    Notes: Abstract  We report the molecular mapping of the py-1 gene for resistance to corky root rot [Pyrenochaeta lycopersici (Schneider and Gerlach)] in tomato using RAPD and RFLP marker analysis. DNA from near-isogenic lines (NILs) of tomato differing in corky root rot resistance was screened with 575 random oligonucleotide primers to detect polymorphic DNAs linked to py-1. Three primers (OPW-04, OPC-02, OPG-19) revealed polymorphisms between the NILs. Twelve resistant and eight susceptible DNA pools derived from segregating F3 families were used to confirm that the RAPD markers were linked to the py-1 gene. Two of the linked amplified fragments, corresponding to OPW-04 and OPC-02, were subsequently cloned and mapped on the tomato molecular linkage map as RFLPs. These clones were located between TG40 and CT31 on the short arm of chromosome 3. Further analysis with selected RFLP markers showed that 7% (8.8 cM) of chromosome 3 of the resistant line ‘Moboglan’ was introgressed from the L. peruvianum donor parent. Three RFLP markers (TG40, TG324, and TG479) from the introgressed part of chromosome 3 were converted to cleaved amplified polymorphism (CAP) markers for use in a polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assay. These PCR markers will allow rapid large-scale screening of tomato populations for corky root rot resistance.

    Notes: Abstract There are few historical analyses quantifying impacts of human activity in Australia. This paper compares vegetation change, fire regime, erosion and eutrophication rates between the European period and the recent prehistoric past in two lake systems on the south coast of New South Wales. The variance in pollen abundance and hence species population changes increased markedly in the historical period, especially amongst understorey taxa, and this could be related to changes in the local fire regimes and to the effects of grazing. Local fire activity decreased from the prehistorical period at both sites. Erosion rates increased in the historical period and both organic and inorganic components were deposited in the lakes. Erosion episodes could be related to fire during some periods but are clearly controlled by forest disturbance and land-use at other periods. The trophic status of the lakes was increasing from before European settlement but accelerated in the recent past. This was in part due to the increased erosion rates and in part due to fertiliser application. The results suggest that lower rates of erosional and eutrophic change occur in catchments with basaltic than with Holocene sand substrata.
