    Notes: The effects of concentrated sulphuric acid, dry heat, hot water and NaOCl treatments on the germinability of dormant large and small aerial Commelina benghalensis L. seeds were evaluated. Concentrated sulphuric acid and NaOCl treatments were more effective than the dry heat and hot water treatments in breaking the dormancy of C. benghalensis aerial seeds. Treatments increased germination of both seed types due to its effect on the seed coat integrity. A scanning electron microscope revealed that changes as a result of scarification occurred in the hilum region of the seed and in the seed coat surface. The large aerial seeds were affected by all treatments more than the small aerial seeds. Difference in germinability between the two seed types was related to the difference in their seed vigour.

    Notes: Recovery from potent non-depolarising muscle relaxants is slower than from the less potent agents. However, recovery from mivacurium, which is more potent than atracurium, is faster than from atracurium following systemic administration. In an attempt to confirm this discrepancy we compared recovery times following simultaneous administration of equipotent doses of atracurium and mivacurium into the isolated forearms of human volunteers (n = 10). This method enabled us to study the interaction of muscle relaxants with receptors at the neuromuscular junction separated from the effects of plasma drug concentration. In these experiments, the recovery times from maximum block to 50% recovery of control twitch height were significantly longer with mivacurium than with atracurium (mean 25.2(SD 4.7) versus 22.6(3.1) min, p 〈 0.01). We found that the evidence that mivacurium has a slower recovery than the less potent atracurium may be true using the bilateral isolated forearm technique and that the discrepancy might be due to a difference in the pharmacokinetic variables of the two drugs.

    Notes: We compared the moisture sorption isotherms (MSI's) and their temperature dependence of composite foods with those of crust and filling. The MSI were determined on cracker, cookie, chocolate, and two types of composite foods such as CFI (cracker/chocolate/cracker) and CF2 (cookie/chocolate/cookie) at 20,30, and 40°C and 11–85% relative humidity, and fitted into the Guggenheim-Anderson-de Boer (GAB) equation. Chocolate had the lowest monolayer (mo) value, equilibrium moisture content (EMC), and sorption energy levels, followed by cookie and cracker. The CFI had higher EMC values and sorption energy than CF2. The GAB mo values and C1 values decreased with temperature, while C2 values increased with temperature.

    Notes: : Antioxidant activities of defatted sesame meal extract increased as the roasting temperature of sesame seed increased, but the maximum antioxidant activity was achieved when the seeds were roasted at 200°C for 60 min. Roasting sesame seeds at 200°C for 60 min significantly increased the total phenolic content, radical scavenging activity (RSA), reducing powers, and antioxidant activity of sesame meal extract; and several low-molecular-weight phenolic compounds such as 2-methoxyphenol, 4-methoxy-3-methylthio-phenol, 5-amino-3-oxo-4-hexenoic acid, 3,4-methylenedioxyphenol (sesamol), 3-hydroxy benzoic acid, 4-hydroxy benzoic acid, vanillic acid, filicinic acid, and 3,4-dimethoxy phenol were newly formed in the sesame meal after roasting sesame seeds at 200°C for 60 min. These results indicate that antioxidant activity of defatted sesame meal extracts was significantly affected by roasting temperature and time of sesame seeds.

    Notes: The straight intestinal tract of the mud loach Misgurnus anguillicaudatus was divided into an intestine and rectum which consisted of a mucosa (epithelial layer), lamina propria-submucosa, muscularis and serosa. The intestine and rectum have shorter mucosal folds and a thinner wall. Extensive vascular capillary networks were present in the mucosa of the intestine and the rectum. The diffusion distance between the vascular capillaries and the lumen in the intestinal and rectal mucosal epithelium was about 11.2 μm (±1.12). The majority of the epithelial mucous cells contain acidic mucins although there are small amounts of a mixture of acidic and neutral mucins. The intestinal tract of M. anguillicaudatus is probably modified to suit its role of respiration for the deficient oxygen supply within their environment.

    Notes: A two-stage fed-batch process was designed to enhance erythritol productivity by the mutant strain of Candida magnoliae. The first stage (or growth stage) was performed in the fed-batch mode where the growth medium was fed when the pH of the culture broth dropped below 4.5. The second stage (or production stage) was started with addition of glucose powder into the culture broth when the cell mass reached about 75 g dry cell weight l−1. When the initial glucose concentration was adjusted to 400 g l−1 in the production stage, 2.8 g l−1 h−1 of overall erythritol productivity and 41% of erythritol conversion yield were achieved, which represented a fivefold increase in erythritol productivity compared with the simple batch fermentation process. A high glucose concentration in the production phase resulted in formation of organic acids including citrate and butyrate. An increase in dissolved oxygen level caused formation of gluconic acid instead of citric acid. Journal of Industrial Microbiology & Biotechnology (2000) 25, 100–103.
