Notes: Multilayers of Cu10 A(ring)/(Co10 A(ring)/Cu10 A(ring))n, where n is the number of bilayers, shows a nonlinear increase of magnetoresistance ratio (MR%) with increasing n. For each value of n the resistivity decreases with applied field. MR values at 4.2 K are less than 2% for n≤16 but increase to 38% at n=128. Conduction electron mean free paths (l), calculated from film resistivity as a function of total film thickness, increase from l=150 to 470 A(ring) when the applied magnetic field changes from zero to 18 kOe. The values obtained for l indicate that for n≤16 MR is reduced by diffuse surface scattering while for n≥16 MR surface scattering is less important and the Co atomic moment ordering is the most important factor. About half the decrease in resistivity with field is associated with the final 2% increase in magnetization for fields above 5 kOe which we interpret in terms of Co interface disorder.

Notes: Amorphous U-Sb alloys in the vicinity of the composition U3Sb4 have magneto-optic Faraday rotations of + 2 × 106 deg/cm. This is the highest rotation of any amorphous ferromagnetic material. These alloys also have relatively high Curie temperatures of about 140 K with magnetic moments per uranium of up to 1.4μB. These properties are unexpected since it is known from intermetallic compounds that U atoms must be isolated from each other in order to develop a magnetic moment. In a concentrated random amorphous alloy, no magnetic moment on the uranium would be expected because of the high probability of uranium near neighbors. In the U-Sb amorphous alloys, however, there appears to be chemical short-range order which tends to favor Sb nearest neighbors for uranium. The amorphous U-Sb alloys have Kerr rotations of about −3°. This value is comparable in magnitude but opposite in sign to that of the single-crystal rock salt compound USb in the visible. In these amorphous alloys the Hall angle from the spontaneous Hall effect can be as much as 17°. Similar large magneto-optic and Hall coefficients have also been found in amorphous U-Bi, U-Sb-Mn, and U-Sb-Co alloys.

Notes: Thin films of (U-As)100−xCox alloys are prepared by magnetron sputtering over the entire composition range x and the polar Kerr rotation and magnetization are measured. The absolute value of the maximum Kerr rotation decreases rapidly from −0.48° for Co (x=100) to −0.09° for x=66 at 300 K. A similar decrease is observed at 10 K but at a slightly slower rate. The Kerr rotation as well as the magnetization are negligible at x(approximately-equal-to)50, indicating a suppression of the magnetic moments in Co and U, simultaneously. This result is explained in terms of filling in the Co 3d conduction band. At x≤30, U develops a magnetic moment at 10 K but Co does not seem to contribute to the magnetization for these compositions.

Notes: Granular films of Cu (Co) with Co concentrations from 5.4% to 12% in the as-deposited form had magnetization showing about 60% of the Co as ferromagnetic particles and exhibited giant magnetoresistance (MR) of about 20% at 4.2 K. Annealing at ∼310 °C increased the MR to 40% and also increased the saturation magnetization indicating additional Co precipitation. At higher annealing temperatures MR decreased to 1%. The Zhang theoretical model involving polarized conduction electron scattering at particle interfaces seems to give a reasonable description of our results including the quadratic behavior of MR vs [M(H)]2 and MR vs [Ms(T)]2.

Notes: A c-axis epitaxial film of composition (Y0.8Ca0.2)Ba2Cu3O6+x is found to be superconducting over a wide range of oxygen stoichiometry, from x≈0 to x≈1.0. The oxygen stoichiometry was varied systematically by annealing films over four decades of oxygen partial pressure, ranging from 0.0067%–100% O2. Both the superconducting transition temperature and the remanent magnetization increase with increasing x and are approximately linear with log oxygen partial pressure over three decades. These increases are attributed mainly to the change in the number of holes in the Cu–O planes caused by oxidation.

Notes: Amorphous thin films of UxAs100−x are ferromagnetic for U-rich compositions, 49≤x≤75, with a magnetic moment of 0.2 to 0.4 μB per U atom and Curie temperatures, Tc, up to 120 K. Large resistivities are found at 5 K for compositions x〈51, indicating semiconducting properties for low U content. For the highest Tc, the anomalous Hall angle is θH = 12° and the anomalous Hall coefficient is RS ≈ 10−7 Ω cm/G. Maximum polar Kerr rotation for U62As38 is −2.0° at 1-eV photon energy. The properties of U-As amorphous films are similar in many respects to those of amorphous U-Sb, except that the maximum values of these properties occur at higher U contents. The results are discussed in terms of spin-orbit interactions.

Notes: Films of YBa2Cu3O7−x prepared by laser ablation deposition show epitaxial growth on (100) SrTiO3 substrates with the c axis perpendicular to the plane of the film. With the magnetic field (H) parallel to the c axis, critical currents of up to 40 MA/cm2 from magnetization measurements are obtained. With H perpendicular to the c axis, various magnetization measurements with field cooling in 40 kOe indicated strong pinning effects with a calculated critical current density significantly higher than that observed in the parallel field configuration.

Notes: We report evidence for an ordered flux line lattice in a 2-μm epitaxial film of YBaCuO from both neutron depolarization and diffraction measurements. Depolarization occurred when field cooling was done normal to the film plane but not within it; this is consistent with frozen-in vortices. Evidence for ordering of the flux lines comes from intensity maxima observed in difference patterns between field cooled and zero field cooled conditions.

Notes: Films of EuS have been doped with up to 34-at. % Tb by coevaporation. From lattice constant measurements we conclude that the films are defect rocksalt structure solid solutions with the general formula Eu1−xTbxS1−y(D'Alembertian)y, where (D'Alembertian) represents a vacancy. The magnetic properties change drastically between undoped films and the Tb substituted samples. The Curie point increases from 20 to about 135 K and the coercivity increases from 60 Oe to about 4 kOe in the x=0.34 sample. Our measurements indicate an increase in RKKY exchange because of the higher carrier concentration caused by Tb doping. The increased carrier density causes a decrease in resistivity of at least two orders of magnitude to about 10−3 Ω cm, the same order of magnitude as reported for bulk solid solutions of EuS-GdS. The peaks in the magneto-optic Kerr spectrum of EuS at about 2 eV are decreased in amplitude, broadened and shifted in energy with Tb doping.

Notes: A single-crystal of YBa2Cu2.85Fe0.15O7 was found to be tetragonal over the temperature range 10–300 K. The iron obeyed a Curie–Weiss law attributed to divalent Fe and showed a negative intercept indicating antiferromagnetic exchange. The presence of Fe degraded the superconducting properties such that critical currents are only 10%–20% of that in the best pure YBa2Cu3O7−δ crystals without Fe and the superconducting transition temperature has decreased from 90 to 60 K.
