    Notes: Abstract. The ability of 15 atmospheric general circulation models (AGCM) to simulate the tropical intraseasonal oscillation has been studied as part of the Atmospheric Model Intercomparison Project (AMIP). Time series of the daily upper tropospheric velocity poential and zonal wind, averaged over the equatorial belt, were provided from each AGCM simulation. These data were analyzed using a variety of techniques such as time filtering and space-time spectral analysis to identify eastward and westward moving waves. The results have been compared with an identical assessment of the European Centre for Medium-range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) analyses for the period 1982–1991. The models display a wide range of skill in simulating the intraseasonal oscillation. Most models show evidence of an eastward propagating anomaly in the velocity potential field, although in some models there is a greater tendency for a standing oscillation, and in one or two the field is rather chaotic with no preferred direction of propagation. Where a model has a clear eastward propagating signal, typical periodicities seem quite reasonable although there is a tendency for the models to simulate shorter periods than in the ECMWF analyses, where it is near 50 days. The results of the space-time spectral analysis have shown that no model has captured the dominance of the intraseasonal oscillation found in the analyses. Several models have peaks at intraseasonal time scales, but nearly all have relatively more power at higher frequencies (〈30 days) than the analyses. Most models underestimate the strength of the intraseasonal variability. The observed intraseasonal oscillation shows a marked seasonality in its occurrence with greatest activity during northern winter and spring. Most models failed to capture this seasonality. The interannual variability in the activity of the intraseasonal oscillation has also been assessed, although the AMIP decade is too short to provide any conclusive results. There is a suggestion that the observed oscillation was suppressed during the strong El Niño of 1982/83, and this relationship has also been reproduced by some models. The relationship between a model's intraseasonal activity, its seasonal cycle and characteristics of its basic climate has been examined. It is clear that those models with weak intraseasonal activity tend also to have a weak seasonal cycle. It is becoming increasingly evident that an accurate description of the basic climate may be a prerequisite for producing a realistic intraseasonal oscillation. In particular, models with the most realistic intraseasonal oscillations appear to have precipitation distributions which are better correlated with warm sea surface temperatures. These models predominantly employ convective parameterizations which are closed on buoyancy rather than moisture convergence.

    Notes: Abstract A 12-year-old girl presented with a 1-month history of posterior neck pain and a large cyst in the second cervical vertebra. She underwent complete curettage of the cyst wall without any kind of bone graft, and the surgical result was good. Microscopic findings in the cyst wall were consistent with simple bone cyst, which is very rare in the spine.

    Notes: Abstract  Transoral protrusion of a peritoneal catheter is rare. Only two cases have been reported in the English literature. We now report the case of a 5-year-old girl who presented with a catheter that had been inserted 4 years previously, protruding from her mouth. Signs of cerebrospinal fluid infection or peri- tonitis were absent. The peritoneal catheter was cut and externalized at the chest. The distal portion, which had perforated the stomach wall, was removed using endoscopic procedures. After 3 weeks of antibiotic treatment, a new shunt was inserted. Analysis of 50 cases of bowel perforation extracted from the English literature showed that among the suggested factors such as age, gender, nutritional state, history of abdominal surgery, and length and type of the catheter, age was the only predisposing factor. In the treatment of bowel perforation by a peritoneal catheter, suspected shunt infection should be managed properly and contamination be minimized during removal of the peritoneal catheter.

    Notes: Abstract: A 21-year-old woman who had a 2-year history of mixed connective tissue disease (MCTD) developed rapidly evolving ulcers consistent with livedoid vasculitis (LV) in all distal extremities. She presented clinically with Raynaud’s phenomenon, polyarthritis and swollen hands; serologically with high titres of ANA and anti-nRNP; and immunogenetically with HLA-DR4 and HLA-DR53. Although there was initial success in treatment except for the skin defects over the ankles, the patient died from disseminated intravascular coagulation. We suggest that LV may be a poor prognostic manifestation in MCTD.

    Notes: Abstract: Wegener’s granulomatosis (WG) is a clinicopathologic entity of unknown cause characterised by a necrotising granulomatous vasculitis affecting multiple organs, especially the upper and lower respiratory tracts, lung and kidney. The lung is the most frequently, and sometimes the only involved organ. Single or multiple nodules, with or without cavitation, are the most common pulmonary manifestations in WG, but mediastinal involvement is atypical. The sole tracheal involvement is rare and hilar and mediastinal involvement has been thought not to be part of the clinical feature. We experienced a rare case of WG presenting as paratracheal mediastinal lesions with tracheal wall invasion, which responded dramatically to corticosteroid treatment. We present this case with a review of the literature.

    Notes: Abstract In order to determine the operating conditions of an electrolyzer to recover lithium metal from molten salt wastes composed of LiCl, Li2O, Cs2O, and SrO, electrolytic reduction experiments have been carried out in a single compartment electrochemical reactor with a mono-polar connection. All the combinative experiments were conducted in an argon atmospheric glove box, and each applied potential-current value was synchronously measured and analyzed in aspects of the preferentially recovering probability of lithium in mixed phases. The effect of the electrode surface area on the current was also observed. Based on our experimental results compared with electrochemical thermodynamic evaluation, it is revealed that Li2O can be preferentially reduced to lithium by controlled LiCl concentration and applied potential.
