    Notes: Abstract Recent improvements in precision and the increase in number of molecular beam scattering experiments demand a reanalysis of the experimental data. The commonly used potential functions show a serious lack of flexibility, and fitting procedures are not unambigious. A new potential ansatz (which is a continuous modification of the (12-6)-potential) has been used to fit all available data on the alkali-rare gas systems Li-Kr, Na-Ar, Na-Kr, Na-Xe, K-Ar, and K-Kr. Aχ 2-minimum method is used as the procedure to fit the data and to estimate the errors of the parameters obtained (see Table 1). It turns out, that the shape of the potential is similar for all systems evaluated here but probably different from that derived for rare gas-rare gas systems.

    Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Der Morbus Fabry ist eine seltene Lipidspeicherkrankheit, die auf einem familiären erblichen Enzymdefekt beruht. Sie stellt ein Syndrom klinischer und morphologischer Störungen mit charakteristischer Beteiligung der Haut sowie systematischer Manifestation pathologischer Veränderungen an Niere, Herz, Blutgefäßen, in zentralem und peripherem Nervensystem und auch im RHS dar. Die Obduktionsbefunde von 3 Fällen aus einer Familie wurden eingehend beschrieben, insbesondere wurde berichtet über das seltene Vorkommen der Erkrankung beim weiblichen Geschlecht. Die Lipidspeicherung wurde histochemisch und elektronenmikroskopisch, vor allem mit der Gefrierätztechnik, untersucht. Dabei konnte ultrastrukturell die Lipidnatur der gespeicherten Substanzen (myelinartige Membranstrukturen) dargestellt werden. Die Speicherung der für die Krankheit typischen Lipide Trihexoseceramin und Dihexoseceramin wurde mittels Histochromatographie nachgewiesen. Zusammengefaßt handelt es sich bei der beschriebenen, sehr seltenen Erkrankung um ein x-chromosomal recessiv vererbbares Leiden mit ausgesprochener Androtropie der Hautveränderungen. Jedoch treten die visceralen Veränderungen auch beim weiblichen Geschlecht, ohne Beteiligung der Haut, mit den gleichen morphologischen Erscheinungen wie beim männlichen Geschlecht auf. Die Beobachtung der Erkrankung bei einer Frau erscheint daher von besonderem Interesse.
    Notes: Summary Fabry's disease is a rare glycosphingolipid lipidosis due to an inherited enzyme defect. It is a syndrome of clinical and morphological disorders characterized by disseminated affection of the skin, and systemic manifestations of pathological changes in kidney, heart and blood vessels as well as in the central and peripheral nervous system and in the RES. The autopsy findings of three cases in one family are reported in detail, particularly the rare diagnosis of Fabry's disease in a female. The typical lipidosis was demonstrated histochemically and by electron microscopy of ultrathin sections as well as by freeze-etch technique. The stored substances were shown to have the ultrastructural characteristics of lipids; trihexoside ceramide and dihexoside ceramide, which are typical for Fabry's disease, were identified by histochromatography. This rare disease represents hereditary defect of the X chromosome with marked androtropy of dermic changes. It is therefore of great interest that the visceral changes were also observed in a female, though without skin involvement, and showed the same morphology as in males.

    Notes: Abstract Nitrate radical (NO3) reactions with benzene (R-1), toluene (R-2), p-xylene (R-3), p-cresol (R-4) and mesitylene (R-5) have been studied by laser photolysis/long path laser absorption (LP-LPLA) in aqueous solution. Rate constants of k1=(4.0±0.6) ⋅ 108, k2=(1.2±0.3) ⋅ 109, k3=(1.6±0.1) ⋅ 109, k4= (8.4±2.3) ⋅ 108 and k5=(1.3±0.3) ⋅ 109 lmol-1s-1 were obtained at T=298 K. In addition, reaction rate coefficients for SO- 5+Fe2+→prod. (R-6) and SO- 5+Mn2+→prod. (R-7) of k6=(4.3±2.4) ⋅ 107 lmol-1s-1 and k7=(4.6±1.0) ⋅ 106 lmol-1s-1 (T=298 K, I→0) have been obtained by the application of laser photolysis/UV-VIS broadband diode array spectroscopy. A new laser photolysis/UV-long path laser absorption experiment has been applied to study the reaction of the Cl- 2 radical anion with dissolved sulfur(IV). For the reactions Cl- 2+HSO- 3→2Cl-+H++SO- 3 (R-8) and Cl- 2+SO2- 3→2Cl-+SO- 3 (R-9) rate coefficients of k8=(1.7±0.2) ⋅ 108 lmol-1s-1 (T=298 K, I→0) and of k9=(6.2±0.3) ⋅ 107 lmol-1s-1 (T=279 K, I→0) were obtained.

    Notes: Abstract Nine pleomorphic adenomas of the human parotid gland were investigated. Within this series the group of cases having clonal aberrations of chromosome Nr 8 predominates. The occurrence of cases with trisomy-8 and cases with structural rearrangements involving a breakpoint in 8q11-8q13 allows a further subdivision of this group of tumors. Our special interest in this paper is devoted to the latter group. the hypothesis is proposed that in these cases the chromosomal rearrangement is the primary event in tumorigenesis, leading to activation of a so far unknown oncogene located most likely at 8q12. The translocations to different recipient chromosomes may serve as sign posts to transcriptionally active chromosomal domains in the salivary gland.

    Notes: A successful new strategy for the asymmetric synthesis of pentalenolactone E (2a) and pentalenolactone F (2b) has been developed. This strategy involves the assembly of ring A of 2a and 2b through a Binger-type Pd-catalyzed [3 + 2]-cycloaddition reaction of diquinene 7 with the diphenyl-substituted methylenecyclopropane 18. Diquinene 7 is available in an enantiomerically pure state in 8 steps from diester 8 by using a pig liver esterase catalyzed enantioselective hydrolysis as the key step. Unexpected facial selectivities of 1,3-dipolar and Pd-catalyzed [3 + 2]-cycloaddition reactions as well Michael reactions of 7 have been observed. Thus, 7 reacted with CH2N2 with a stereoselectivity of 98% or greater in favour of reaction at the concave side, with formation of the cisoid triquinane 27. A Trost-type Pd-catalyzed reaction of 7 with 11 gave the transoid triquinane 6 and the cisoid triquinane 12 in ratios of 1:1.7 to 1:5.3 depending on the polarity of the solvent. Binger-type Pd-catalyzed cycloaddition reactions of 7 with methylenecyclopropane (13) in toluene afforded a mixture of 6 and 12 in a ratio of 1:7. In the Pd-catalyzed reaction of 7 with the phenyl-substituted methylenecyclopropanes 14a/b the cisoid triquinane 15 was obtained with a selectivity of 6.7:1 or above. Pd-catalyzed reactions of 7 with the disubstituted methylenecyclopropanes 16 and 18 gave, however, the transoid triquinanes 17 and 19, respectively, with selectivities of 23:1 and 7:1, respectively. Nakamura-type cycloaddition of 7 to the methylenecyclopropanone ketal 20 led to the quantitative formation of the transoid triquinane 21a and the cisoid triquinane 22a in a ratio of 1:2. The structures of cycloadducts 12, 15, 19 and 27 were determined by X-ray analyses. The π-facial differentiation may be ascribed mainly to a stabilization of the concave transition states by an electrostatic interaction between the lactone carbonyl group and the nucleophilic reagents. The stereoselectivity model proposed has been substantiated by a study of the analogous cycloaddition reactions of diquinenes 29a-c, which exhibited only a low π-facial stereoselectivity, and by an X-ray structure analysis of 7, which revealed a slight concave pyramidalization of the double bond. X-ray structure analysis and NMR spectroscopy of diquinane 28a showed the 5E-conformation, in which the hydroxy group occupies the pseudoaxial position, to be the more stable one. According to force-field calculations, the 5E-conformation seems to be stabilized by an intramolecular electrostatic interaction between the hydroxylic oxygen atom and the lactone carbonyl group, corresponding to the initial step of an intermolecular nucleophilic attack at the carbonyl group. The O-C1 distance and the O-C1-O angle found in the crystal structure of 28a support this notion.
