Notes: Abstract Measurements of a.c. conductivity, dielectric constants, Mo¨ssbauer spectra and magnetic susceptibility were carried out on samples of composition: 20LiO2, 31B2O5, 34SiO2, 15 − x NiO, xFe2O3 where x = 2.5, 5, 7.5, 10 and 12.5 mol %. It was found that when x is changed from 2.5 to 10 mol % NiO, the conductivity decreases due to the increase of the bridging oxygen ions. When x is increased to greater than 10 mol % NiO, the conductivity increases because of the decrease of the ratio of Fe2+Fe3+ ions as confirmed from Mo¨ssbauer data. The conductivity has a distinct minimum at 10 mol % NiO. Distribution of relaxation processes was also studied, and two processes were adequate to describe the present experimental data.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Die Wirksamkeits-Schwelle desBac. thuringiensis-Präparats Dipel 2X betrug 250g/f(eddan).
Notes: Abstract The effective threshold rate of application of Dipel 2X was 250g/f. Incorporation of some chemical additives such as calcium sulphate (CaSO4) or calcium oxide (CaO) significantly potentiated the effectiveness of Dipel 2X on larval population. The addition of calcium carbonate (CaCO3) and zinc sulphate (ZnSO4) to Dipel 2X greatly reduced the larval population and led to a significant increase in the yield of some vegetable crops. Dipel 2X baits at 250g/f were almost as effective as the chemical insecticide Hostathion when used at 1.5l/f in controllingA. ypsilon larvae attacking vegetable crops. Control of the greasy cutwormAgrotis ypsilon population was better achieved when the biological control agent Dipel 2X was used as baits.

Zehn
Notes: Abstract Field applications usingBacillus thuringiensis (Dipel 2 X) againstSpodoptera exigua infesting corn and sunflower cultivations were carried out in two different localities in Egypt. The percentage of infested corn plants decreased to 2.5%, seven days after treatment with Dipel 2x, (250 g/fed) and the yield was significantly increased compared with untreated plots. The carbamate insecticide (Lannate) at 300 g/fed caused complete kill to the larvae and the highest yield was obtained. Application of Lannate, Dipel (250 g) or a combination of both (150 g/each/fed) caused a high reduction of the larvae existing in sunflower after seven days from application, while Dipel at 200 g/fed gave a lower effect. Ten days after application, the number of larvae and infested plants increased significantly in plots treated with Lannate alone, while plots treated with either Dipel (250 g) or Dipel combined with Lannate (150 g/each) still maintained a lower infestation. The estimated yield showed the highest increase in plots treated with Lannate followed by Dipel (250 g) and then a combination of both.

Notes: Abstract An area of 50 feddans cultivated with soybeans was treated withBacillus thuringiensis (B.t.) baits againstAgrotis ypsilon and 60 feddans were sprayed withB.t. spray againstSpodoptera littoralis. WhenB.t. baits were used, the percentage of kill ofA. ypsilon reached 96.1–96.4% compared to 97.4–98% kill on using hostathion baits. WhenB.t. was sprayed againstS. littoralis, a percentage of larval kill 88.3% was obtained. This increased to 97.3% after the second application. On the other hand, the precentage of kill reached 96.8% when lannate was sprayed once. The average yield was 1.54 tons/fed. whenB.t. was sprayed twice againstS. littoralis and 1.42 tons/fed. when sprayed once. Areas, treated with lannate gave 1.44 tons/fed., while in the untreated area the yield was comparatively low being 0.83 tons/fed.

Notes: Abstract Agrotis ypsilon andSpodoptera littoralis can be successfully controlled on various field crops usingBacillus thuringiensis (Dipel 2X) baits and sprays. Baits based on the pathogen at 200–250 g/Feddan, scored the best efficacy againstA. ypsilon in clover fields followed by potato, tomato, and cotton cultivations. Addition of some chemical additives (inorganic salts) toB. thuringiensis bait formulations greatly enhanced its potency. This was associated with an obvious increase in the yield of clover, potato and tomato crops; calcium oxide showed to be highly afficient in this respect. Sprays of Dipel 2X were also found as affective as lannate in controllingS. littoralis on clover cultivations.

Notes: Summary Cytokinin-autotrophic strains of carrot callus contained active substances with Chromatographic mobilities on Sephadex LH-20 corresponding to 6-(4-hydroxy-3-methylbut-trans-2-enylamino)purine (Zeatin, Z), 6-(3-methylbut-2-enylamino)purine (iP) and the ribosides (9R)Z and (9R)iP. The apparent major activity was found in a fraction, with an elution volume of 242–291 ml. Hydrolysis of this fraction with HCl and Β-Glucosidase gave rise to Z, indicating that the major active compound is a polar conjugate of Zeatin. In all experiments the extracts were tested immediately after preparation; deep freeze storage, led to a considerable loss of activity in polar fractions. while the free base cytokinins and their ribosides showed increased activity levels. Analogous results were obtained by means of paper chromatography.

Notes: Abstract Field and laboratory studies on the effects of low-pH stress are reported here for lacustrine bacteria. Two biochemical parameters, respiration and substrate utilization, reveal a marked decrease under severe low-pH stress. Bacterial ultrastructure and cell diversity can be correlated with a given level of pH. Structural changes in the cell envelope as a function of pH are highlighted. The biochemical, physiological and morphological observations are united into a hypothesis which seeks to relate cell adaptation to environmental stress.

Notes: Abstract A description is given of concurrent changes in bacterial ultrastructure and physiology in relation to applied stresses of acid and/or copper: the environmentally-relevant correlations are explored as a potential tool for ascertaining mechanisms of acid rain damage. Ultrastructural analysis permits a differentiation, on a gross scale, between different levels of acid and combined acid/copper stresses in laboratory experiments on enrichment cultures of lacustrine microbial populations rich in Gram-negative bacteria. For the dominant morphotypes of Gram-negative bacteria, changes in the cell envelope (and its extensions) correlate also with changes in activity of envelope-associated enzymes.
