Notes: Atomically flat terraces and steps with a height of one c-axis lattice parameter have been observed with atomic force microscopy (AFM) on the surface of a flux-grown YBa2Cu3O7−δ (YBCO) single crystal. Homoepitaxial growth of YBCO on the flux-grown single crystal has been investigated using reflection high-energy electron diffraction (RHEED). Initial stage of the RHEED intensity oscillation without anomalous peaks usually observed in heteroepitaxial growth suggests epitaxial growth of YBCO on the substrate surface from the beginning of deposition. A surface image of AFM for the homoepitaxial film reveals coalescent step-like structures and two-dimensional islands of one c-axis height on the growing surface of YBCO. The observed RHEED oscillation and AFM image are consistent with the two-dimensional nucleation growth of the film.

Notes: Growth behavior of thin films of YBa2Cu3O7−δ and NdBa2Cu3O7−δ has been observed in reflection high-energy electron diffraction (RHEED) during coevaporation of constituent metal atoms with a NO2 supersonic molecular beam. The intensity oscillations of RHEED specular beam have been observed during deposition. The nucleation behavior of NdBa2Cu3O7−δ is found to be different from that of YBa2Cu3O7−δ in RHEED observation.

Notes: Electrical properties of the junction between a metal and an oxide semiconductor whose surface has been treated with high-purity ozone were investigated. In situ treatment of ozone on the surfaces of Nb-doped SrTiO3 (NSTO) and Nb-doped TiO2 (NTO) and in situ deposition of Au have been performed to make metal/semiconductor junctions. The I–V characteristics of the junctions show high rectification properties (the rectification ratios are over a ninth order of magnitude when the junctions are biased at 1.3 V) and the capacitance–voltage (C–V) characteristics show linear C−2–V relationships in the reverse condition. These results have indicated that the surface treatment of the oxide semiconductors using high-purity ozone and in situ deposition of metal electrodes drastically improve the Schottky properties of oxide semiconductor diodes. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Intrinsic electrical properties of Au/Nb-doped SrTiO3(001) (STO:Nb) Schottky junctions, fabricated using a proper surface treatment of the STO:Nb and in situ deposition of Au, were investigated in detail. Current–voltage characteristics and photocurrent–wavelength characteristics have shown a temperature-dependent and voltage-dependent Schottky barrier height, while capacitance–voltage characteristics have shown a temperature-independent flat band voltage. Using a temperature-dependent and field-dependent permittivity of the STO in the framework of Devonshire theory, we have performed computer simulation of the Schottky barrier potential to analyze the electrical properties of the junction. It is found that an intrinsic low permittivity layer at the Au/STO:Nb interface explains all the temperature dependence of the electrical properties. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Abstract  Background:  We retrospectively evaluated the erectile function after nerve-sparing radical retropubic prostatectomy (RRP) and the efficacy of sildenafil for erectile dysfunction (ED) following RRP according to the preoperative erectile function. Methods:  We evaluated 48 Japanese patients who underwent nerve-sparing RRP at the Sapporo Medical University School of Medicine, Sapporo, Japan, between January 1996 and December 2001. Erectile function following nerve-sparing RRP was assessed by a simple mailed questionnaire that was constructed for the study. Results:  Of the 48 patients, 36 had normal erectile function preoperatively, but for 12, function was not sufficient to penetrate. The overall estimated recovery rates of any degree of erection were 50.6% at 36 months and 94.3% at 60 months. However, that of erection sufficient to penetrate was only 17.7% at 36 months and was only seen in bilateral nerve-sparing patients. Sildenafil was effective in 9 of 13 ED patients (69.2%) in both nerve-sparing groups. When patients were divided according to preoperative erectile function, no difference was found in the efficacy rate between patients with normal function and those with ED.Conclusions:  Even bilateral nerve-sparing RRP can not always guarantee a sufficient erection. However, sildenafil is effective for ED following nerve-sparing RRP regardless of the nerve-sparing procedure or preoperative erectile function. Thus, preoperative function alone, although depending on its severity, may not necessarily be a reason for exclusion from receiving nerve-sparing RRP if patients want to have the operation.

Notes: Summary A single-step procedure for extracting and concentrating hCG in 24-h urine samples was developed. The procedure involves adsorption chromatography with Vitachange. The hCG recovery was more than 90% compared with about 51% for the standard kaolin-acetone method. Nonspecific urinary protein concentration in extracts was also reduced. Thus, this method for concentration of urinary hCG with subsequent radioimmunoassay (RIA) using an antiserum against the unique carboxyl-terminal peptide of hCGβ subunit provides a sensitive and specific method for detecting hCG in urine.

Notes: Abstract We report a new fabrication technique of a sub-micron sized probe consisting of functional material on the aperture of a metal coated optical fiber probe tip for near field optical microscopy. The selective fixation of sub-micron size functional material has been achieved by photochemical vapor deposition. Here, we demonstrate for the first time the selective fixation of zinc oxide, a wide gap semiconductor with ultraviolet emission ability, on such probe tips. Results reveal the efficient excitonic emission of 372 nm even at room temperature, which is characteristic of high quality zinc oxide.

Notes: Summary Ooplasmic segregation, i.e. the accumulation of pole plasm in theTubifex egg, consists of two steps: (1) Cytoplasm devoid of yolk granules and lipid droplets migrates toward the egg periphery and forms a continuous subcortical layer around the whole egg; (2) the subcortical cytoplasm moves along the surface toward the animal pole in the animal hemisphere and toward the vegetal pole in the vegetal hemisphere, and finally accumulates at both poles of the egg to form the animal and vegetal pole plasms. Whereas the subcortical layer increases in volume during the first step, it decreases during the second step. This is ascribed to the compact rearrangement in the subcortical layer of membraneous organelles such as endoplasmic reticulum and mitochondria. The number of membraneous organelles associated with the cortical layer increases during the second step. Electron microscopy reveals the presence of microfilaments not only in the cortical layer but also in the subcortical layer. Subcortical microfilaments link membraneous organelles to form networks; some are associated with bundles of cortical microfilaments. The thickness of the cortical layer differs regionally. The pattern of this difference does not change during the second step. On the other hand, the subcortical cytoplasm moves ahead of the ‘stationary’ cortical layer. The accumulation of pole plasm is blocked by cytochalasin B but not by colchicine. The first step of this process is less sensitive to cytochalasin B than the second step, suggesting that these two steps are controlled by differnt mechanisms. The mechanical aspects of ooplasmic segregation in theTubifex egg are discussed in the light of the present observations.
