Abstract In the reaction of barium tellurate with an excess of fluorosulphonic acid, besides some TeF6 and variable amounts of SO3, four as yet unknown, volatile compounds of Tellurium with the F5Te-group are formed: pentafluoro orthotelluric acid, F5TeOH, m.p. 40°, b.p. 60°; pentafluorotellur fluorosulphate, F5TeOSO2F, m.p. −89°, b.p. 56°; pentafluorotellur sulphuric acid, F5TeOSO3H, m.p. −21°, b.p. 133°, and bis-pentafluorotellur sulphate, (F5TeO)2SO2, m.p. −50°, b.p. 118°. While pentafluoro-orthotelluric acid and pentafluorotellur sulphuric acid show the reactions to be expected from acids, the two other compounds are insoluble in water and relatively stable towards hydrolysis. This apparent difference in behaviour between tellurium and selenium—which in the analogous reaction yields the gaseous selenium dioxide difluoride, SeO2F2—can be explained by the tendency of tellurium for a higher coordination number.
Notes:
