Notes: Abstract Determination of coagulation Factor XIII (F XIII)-related parameters in 21 patients with Henoch-Schönlein purpura documented a significant decrease of F XIII activity as well as of the F XIII-related antigenic determinants. Subgroup analysis with regard to the clinical symptoms showed an even further decrease of these parameters in patients with gastrointestinal complications. Stimulated by these findings a substitution therapy with a F XIII concentrate was initiated in those patients whose F XIII activity in plasma remained low and who developed severe abdominal pain accompanied by persisting gastrointestinal bleeding. This therapeutic approach not only corrected the laboratory data, but more important led to a cessation of pain and bleeding. A rapid decrease of F XIII levels after transfusion below 40 U/ml was indicative of relapse of abdominal symptoms, while increasing values were associated with the recovery of the patients. In conclusion: F XIII activity determinations appear to have a predictive value in patients with Henoch-Schönlein purpura, and the administration of F XIII concentrates may contribute to the improvement of gastrointestinal complications.

Notes: Abstract The seasonal behavior of both vegetative cells and cysts of dinophytes Scrippsiella spp., mostly S. trochoidea, which is the dominant group among dinoflagellate populations in Onagawa Bay on the northeastern coast of Honshu, Japan, was investigated between 1990 and 1992. The germination of the cysts after 8 d incubation under favorable laboratory conditions was examined using the extinction dilution method. Incessant germination occurred throughout the year, but the germination ratio (no. of germinable cysts/total cysts) varied seasonally with a marked fluctuation during summer when vegetative cells in the water column were abundant. Although such fluctuation largely reflects the variable flux of newly deposited immature cysts produced by the vegetative cells, the regulation of germination caused by a lowered saturation of dissolved oxygen (DO) under thermally stratified conditions was also suggested. During winter, while the cysts germinated in the laboratory, vegetative cells were not found in the water column. These facts suggest that germination in situ is regulated by low temperature in winter and possibly by lowered DO and by cyst age as well in summer. Such regulation prevents simultaneous germination of all the cysts, which is disadvantageous for the population because it would be more difficult to survive adverse conditions such as successive nutrient depletion and higher grazing risk.

Notes: Abstract Standing crops and the vertical distribution of four groups of ciliates, autotrophic naked ciliates (ANC), heterotrophic naked ciliates (HNC ), mixotrophic naked ciliates (MNC) and loricated ciliates (LC ), were analysed in relation to phytoplankton chlorophyll a in the western Pacific. Data were gathered from the upper 60 to 200 m of water in the subarctic North Pacific in spring, in the subtropical North Pacific in spring, in Toyama Bay in summer, off eastern Australia in spring and off Sanriku in spring and fall. Of the four groups, the standing crop of HNC (cells l−1) showed the highest correlation to phytoplankton chloro- phyll a [CHL, μg l−1; r=0.66, n=365 (HNC=490 ×CHL 0.653)]. Depths of the maximum layers of HNC and MNC were usually shallower than that of chlorophyll a, while those of ANC and LC occurred frequently beneath the chlorophyll maximum layer. This indicates that these four ciliate groups are substantially different from each other, and that each group holds a different ecological position in the marine microbial food web.

Notes: Abstract Incubations of natural populations of phytoplankton were carried out in neritic and oceanic areas of the western subarctic Pacific in 1991 and 1992. Algae in the order Parmales, class Chrysophyceae, were observed to increase in number during the incubations. In the light-exposed treatments, the growth rate of Parmales at 5 to 12 °C was 0.012 to 0.016 h-1 or 0.41 to 0.54 doubling d-1, which is lower than that of diatoms, but comparable to that of common dinoflagellates. On the other hand, heterotrophic choanoflagellates grew positively in both light and dark at the rate of 0.016 to 0.040 h-1 or 0.54 to 1.39 doublings d-1, which is comparable or lower than the reported value at 15 °C. The results obtained demonstrate that the Parmales can grow vegetatively in light and prefer low temperatures.

Notes: Abstract Cysts of the planktonic oligotrich ciliate Strombidium conicum were isolated from sediment samples, collected monthly in Onagawa Bay on the northeastern Pacific coast of Japan, and incubated under laboratory conditions of 20 °C in light. The excystment ability changed seasonally in a regular manner, which was demonstrated by alternation of three characteristic seasonal patterns of the cumulative excystment curve, i.e., rapid, delayed and transitional patterns. While the transitional excystment pattern was characteristic during the period from spring to midsummer, the rapid pattern occurred during late summer to early winter. The pattern changed again to transitional in midwinter and finally returned to the delayed pattern in late winter or early spring. We suggest that mud temperature was the most determinative factor of this seasonality in excystment ability. Such synchronization of annual excystment helps this species to proliferate rapidly and maintain the vegetative part of the population in the upper water column for a longer period of time where it is subjected to the dispersion process due to water movement.

Notes: Summary.  The pathogenicity of a new neurotropic equine herpesvirus 9 (EHV-9) formerly designated gazelle herpesvirus 1 was evaluated using the goat as a representative of domesticated ruminants. Two goats inoculated intranasally with EHV-9 showed salivation, teeth grinding and other neurological disorders on day 8 post inoculation. One goat died 30 min after the onset of clinical signs and the other was sacrificed 3 h after the sudden onset of teeth grinding and foamy salivation. EHV-9 was recovered from peripheral white blood cells, the olfactory bulbs and brain, nasal swabs, concha, and lungs. Neuropathological lesions were located in the olfactory bulbs, cerebrum, midbrain and medulla oblongata with degeneration and necrosis of neurons, rarefaction, perivascular infiltration of mononuclear cells, and nodal glial reaction. EHV-9 antigen was detected in neurons in the lesions. These findings indicated that EHV-9 is highly pathogenic with high neurotropism for goats.

Notes: Abstract Phytoplankton standing crop (chlorophyll a) and primary productivity were recorded, and zooplankton biomass was estimated in the two large bays of Australia, the Great Australian Bight on the south coast (December, 1965) and the Gulf of Carpentaria on the north coast (December, 1968). In the Gulf of Carpentaria, the phytoplankton standing crop (average, 27.3 mg chlorophyll a m-2) and primary productivity (average, 133.1 mg C m-2 h-1), as well as zooplankton biomass (average, 305.3 mg wet weight m-3) are much higher than in the Great Australian Bight (12.1 mg chlorophyll a m-2, 18.2 mg C m-2 h-1, 7.1 mg wet weight m-3, respectively). The unexpectedly low productivity values in the Great Australian Bight are attributable to environmental conditions of this bay, which obtains neither replenishment of nutrients from the land nor receives upwelling of deep water.

Notes: Abstract Organosols of NiS, PdS, and MnS in N,N-dimethylformamide were prepared by reaction of the metal acetate with H2S. Organosols of mixed-metal sulfides (Zn x Cd1−x S, Hg x Cd1−x S, Hg x Cu1−x S, Cd x Mn1−x S, Hg x Mn1−x S, Hg x Cd1−x S, and Mn x Zn1−x S) were similarly obtained by reaction of mixtures of the metal salts with H2S. The organosol of Zn0.5Cd0.5S contained particle with two particle size distributions centered at 6.5 nm and 29 nm, as revealed by Ar laser-scattering analysis. The metal sulfides are recovered by addition of Et2O to the organosols. Zn x Cd1−x S thus obtained shows magnetic susceptibility in the range 0.5×10−6–2.3×10−6 emug−1 depending on thex value. Addition of polymers to the organosols affords semiconducting films of metal sulfide-polymer composites.
