    Notes: Abstract. A Steiner tree T on a given set of points A is called linear if all Steiner points, including those collapsing into their adjacent given points, lie on one path referred to as its trunk. Suppose A is a simple polygonal line. Roughly speaking, T is similar to A if its trunk turns right or left when A does. In this paper we prove that A can be expanded to another polygonal line, and T can be constructed in linear time using this expansion method.

    Notes: Abstract Fifty years ago Jarnik and Kössler showed that a Steiner minimal tree for the vertices of a regularn-gon contains Steiner points for 3 ≤n≤5 and contains no Steiner point forn=6 andn≥13. We complete the story by showing that the case for 7≤n≤12 is the same asn≥13. We also show that the set ofn equally spaced points yields the longest Steiner minimal tree among all sets ofn cocircular points on a given circle.

    Notes: Abstract Aims/hypothesis. To investigate the contribution of mutations in maturity-onset diabetes of the young (MODY) and mitochondrial genes to early-onset diabetes with a strong family history of diabetes in a cohort with a high prevalence of Type I (insulin-dependent) diabetes mellitus. Methods. Screening for sequence variants in the hepatocyte nuclear factor (HNF)–4 α (MODY1), glucokinase (MODY2), HNF-1 α (MODY3) genes and mitochondrial DNA was carried out in 115 Finnish and Swedish patients with early-onset ( ≤ 40 years) diabetes using the single strand conformation polymorphism (SSCP) technique and direct sequencing. Allele frequencies were compared with 118 patients with onset of diabetes Type II (non-insulin-dependent) diabetes mellitus after the age of 40 and 92 non–diabetic control subjects without a family history of diabetes. Results. In total 52 sequence variants were found in the HNF-1α, HNF-4α and glucokinase genes, 12 of which were considered as MODY mutations. Three families had the A3243G mutation in the mitochondrial tRNA Leu gene, which resulted in an overall prevalence of these mutations of 13 %. Conclusion/interpretation. Among 115 Scandinavian families, mutations in the HNF-1α gene represented the most common cause of familial early-onset ( ≤ 40 years) diabetes: MODY3 (5.2 %) more than MODY2 (3.5 %) more than MIDD (2.6 %) more than MODY1 (1.7 %).     Notes: Summary Heat-shock protein (HSP) gene expression in two wheat lines cv ‘Mustang’ (heat-tolerant) and cv ‘Sturdy’ (heat-susceptible) were analyzed to determine if wheat genotypes differing in heat tolerance also differ in in-vitro HSP synthesis (translatable HSP mRNAs) and steady-state levels of HSP mRNA. Several sets of mRNA were isolated from seedling leaf tissues which had been heat-stressed at 37 °C for various time intervals. These mRNAs were hybridized with HSP cDNA or genomic DNA probes (HSP17, 26, 70, 98, and ubiquitin). Protein profiles were compared using in-vitro translation and 2-D gels. The Northern slot-blot data from the heat-stress treatment provide evidence that the heat-tolerant cv ‘Mustang’ synthesized low molecular weight (LMW) HSP mRNA earlier during exposure to heat shock and at a higher level than did the heat-susceptible cv ‘Sturdy’. This was especially true for the chloroplast-localized HSP. The protein profiles shown by 2-D gel analysis revealed that there were not only quantitative differences of individual HSPs between the two wheat lines, but also some unique HSPs which were only found in the ‘Mustang’ HSP profiles. The high level of RFLP between the two wheat lines was revealed by Southern blot hybridization utilizing a HSP17 probe. These data provide a molecular basis for further genetic analysis of the role of HSP genes in thermal tolerance in wheat.

    Notes: Abstract Six to twenty-eight months after transplanting, the net photosynthetic rate (PN) of Miscanthus leaves was measured at leaf temperatures between 18 to 37 °C. PN of clones from high mountain areas was more adaptable to low temperature, while that of clones from low mountain areas was more adaptable to high temperature. The clones from the lowlands were best adapted to both high and low temperatures. These characteristics lasted at least 28 months after transplanting. Thus Miscanthus had differentiated into different ecotypes to adapt to the thermal environments of different elevations. Comparison of the PN values measured in different seasons and durations after transplanting indicated that PN in Miscanthus could acclimate to environments with various temperature ranges resulting from elevation and seasonal changes.

    Notes: Abstract Suppose AiBiCi (i = 1, 2) are two triangles of equal side lengths lying on spheres Φi with radii r1, r2 (r1 〈 r2) respectively. First we prove the existence of a map h: A1B1C1 → A2B2C2 so that for any two points P1, Q1 in A1B1C1,¦P1Q1¦≥¦h(P1)h(Q1)¦. Moreover, if P1, Q1 are not on the same side, then the inequality strictly holds. This compression theorem can be applied to compare the minimum of a variable in triangles on two spheres. Hence, one of the applications of the compression theorem is the study of Steiner minimal tress on spheres. The Steiner ratio is the largest lower bound for the ratio of the lengths of Steiner minimal trees to minimal spanning trees for point sets in a metric space. Using the compression theorem we prove that the Steiner ratio on spheres is the same as on the Euclidean plane, namely $$\backslash \bar 3/2$$ .
