Notes:
Abstract Gas discharges in very small electrode arrangements, with air gaps below 50 microns, as are often used in modern electrostatic recording, have been studied. In particular, the breakdown voltage as a function of the air gap, the charging mechanism for various recording media, the statistical variation of the time lag of the discharges as well as the temporal formation of the discharge have all been investigated. There is good agreement between experimental and theoretical results.
