Notes: Abstract Hyaline bodies of odontogenic cyst were examined by histological, histochemical and electron microscopic observations. They were seen only in odontogenic cysts and their prevalence was 6.9 % in 576 cases of the cysts. They occurred most frequently within the epithelial lining, but a few bodies were observed in the connective tissue walls. Histochemical reactions of hyaline bodies were similar to those of dental cuticles, but differed from keratin. Ultrastructurally, hyaline bodies were typed into two forms: lamellated and homogeneous. The lamellated bodies were composed of alternate electron-dense and electron-lucent layers. The homogeneous bodies were occasionally formed around granular material, mineralized masses and cholesterol clefts. Hyaline bodies adjoined epithelial cells via a basal lamina-like structure and half-desmosomes. Epithelial cells containing well-developed, rough surfaced, endoplasmic reticulum were seen adjacent to hyaline bodies. Ferritin-like granules were found in the cytoplasm of epithelial cells near hyaline bodies. By electron probe X-ray microanalysis, inorganic elements within the Ferritin-like granules were the same in constitution as those in the outermost electron-dense layer of the lamellated bodies. By scanning electron microscopy, hyaline bodies displayed ellipsoidal and slick-like shapes. The present study suggested that hyaline bodies arc particular products formed by odontogenic epithelium.

Notes: The incidence and distribution of amyloid deposits in aged tongues obtained from 107 necropsies over 60 years of age were examined. Thirty-nine tongues were affected with amyloid deposits and the overall incidence was 36.4%. The incidence increased with each advancing decade, and the group over 90 years old showed the higest incidence of 59.6%. Although the amount of amyloid deposits differed in each case, severely affected cases were most frequently found in the advanced decades. Amyloid deposits were almost always confined to blood vessels, especially arterioles and arteries. They occasionally occupied the entire wall and occluded the lumen. Blood vessels affected with amyloid were usually located in the muscle layers of the tongue. Vessels in the subepithelial layer and lingual glands were, however, sometimes affected. Amyloid deposits were resistant to Congo red staining with the potassium permangante method, and stained positively with DMAS. The present study suggested that the tongue is an important organ as to the appearance of amyloid deposits in elderly persons.

Notes: Abstract: Although pleomorphic adenoma is the most common type of salivary gland epithelial tumor, it frequently contains “mesenchymal”-like components, including myxoid or chondroid tissues. We reported previously that chondroid tissue formation in pleomorphic adenoma was associated with overexpression of bone morphogenetic proteins (BMPs) by neoplastic myoepithelial cells. BMPs belong to the transforming growth factor (TGF)-β superfamily, so we hypothesized that pleomorphic adenoma may express TGF-βs and that these molecules may regulate mesenchymal-like tissue formation. To evaluate this hypothesis, we immunohistochemically examined TGF-β1, -β2 and -β3 expression and localization in normal salivary glands and in 43 cases of pleomorphic adenomas. There was no evidence of TGF-β1 expression in normal salivary glands or pleomorphic adenomas. Signals for TGF-β2 in the normal salivary glands were observed in the intercalated ducts, while in pleomorphic adenomas they were observed in the inner ductal cells of the tubulo-glandular structures. Signals for TGF-β3 in the normal salivary glands were observed in mucous cells, whereas in pleomorphic adenomas they were observed in the solid nests of neoplastic myoepithelial cells, in the portion showing squamous metaplasia, and in the inner ductal cells of tubulo-glandular structures. TGF-βs induce ectopic cartilage formation in vivo, but chondroid tissues in pleomorphic adenomas showed only weak TGF-β3 expression. TGF-β may be related to differentiation of the inner ductal cells and the neoplastic myoepithelial cells. In conclusion, pleomorphic adenomas expressed TGF-β2 and -β3, which may be associated with differentiation of the inner ductal cells and neoplastic myoepithelial cells.

Notes: Multilocular cystic nephroma is a relatively rare benign tumor of the kidney. An adult case of spontaneously ruptured multilocular cystic nephroma was reported. A 33-year-old woman who presented with a right flank colic attack. The preoperative diagnosis was spontaneously ruptured renal tumor. A right nephrectomy was performed. A multilocular cystic lesion, 10 cm in diameter, was found in the removed specimen, which had a hematoma inside and direct tumor extension into the renal pelvis. On microscopic examination, the surface of loculi was covered by a layer of hobnail epithelium, and septa were composed of fibrous tissue with dilated vessels, lacking in normal renal components. There were no signs of malignancy. The lesion extending into the renal pelvis showed the same microscopic findings. The final diagnosis was multilocular cystic nephroma. Two respects, spontaneous rupture and tumor extension into the renal pelvis, were unique to the present case. There has been no report of spontaneously ruptured mutilocular cystic nephroma. The tumor extension into the renal pelvis, however, has been found in several reports. This growth pattern might be one of the characteristics of this benign renal tumor.

Notes: The effect of filtration layer morphology on filtration performance at 673 K was investigated for continuous alumina-fiber-reinforced mullite composite filters that capture fly ash on their outer surfaces. Two types of filtration layers were prepared on the outer surfaces: a mono-layer consisting of mullite agglomerated particulates and a bi-layer, with mullite whiskers formed by a vapor-phase reaction and strongly adhered to the particulates exposed on the outer surfaces. For filters with mono-filtration layers, the filtration efficiency was improved slightly by increasing the filtration layer thickness. However, the maximum differential pressure increased during the filtration tests. Adhesion of whiskers to the outer surface decreased the maximum differential pressure to about one-third less than that with the mono-filtration layer. This low differential pressure remained constant throughout the duration of the test, with corresponding increases in filtration efficiency.

Notes: Spinel platelets were formed from a powder mixture of 3–5 μm wide and 0.2–0.5 μm thick α-Al2O3 and 1–8 μm (average 3 μm) MgSO4 heated 2 h at 1200°C. The hexagonal platelet shape of the original α-Al2O3 platelet was maintained in the spinel, although their size was slightly increased and their surface roughened. When a mixture of α-Al2O3 platelets and MgO powder was heated 3 h at 1400°C, the spinel formed lost the platelet morphology of the alumina.

Notes: The conditions necessary for synthesizing Al4SiC4 from mixtures of aluminum, silicon, and carbon and kaolin, aluminum, and carbon, as starting materials, were examined in the present study. The standard Gibbs energy of formation for the thermodynamic reaction SiC(s) + Al4C3(s) = Al4SiC4(s) changed from positive to negative at 1106°C. SiC and Al4C3 formed as intermediate products when the mixture of aluminum, silicon, and carbon was heated in argon gas, and Al4SiC4 then formed by reaction of the SiC and Al4C3 at 〉1200°C. Al4C3, SiO2, Al2O3, SiC, and Al4O4C formed as intermediate products when the mixture of kaolin, aluminum, and carbon was heated under vacuum, and Al4SiC4 formed from a reaction of those intermediate products at 〉1600°C.

Notes: We examined the chemistry and structure of the liquid that was exsolved by the remelting reaction of belite. Electron probe microanalysis revealed that the liquid concentrated the impurity components (e.g., Na2O, K2O, Al2O3, and Fe2O3) of the parent belite. Micro-Raman spectroscopy showed the similarity of the spectra of the exsolved liquid and amorphous calcium aluminoferrite solid solution. The transition from the crystalline to the amorphous state of the solid solution was induced by increasing the excitation laser power. Accordingly, the liquid at ambient temperature was most likely in a glassy state. The chemical composition of the liquid, deduced from the above experiments, was ∼81 mass% Ca2AlFeO5 and ∼19 mass% Ca2SiO4. The alkalies, which have never been detectable in crystalline calcium aluminoferrite, were probably necessary for the vitrification of the liquid.

Notes: The effect of Al8B4C7 used as an antioxidant in MgO–C refractories and the behavior of Al8B4C7 in CO gas were investigated in the present study. Al8B4C7 was found to react with CO gas, to form Al2O3(s), B2O3(l), and C(s), at temperatures 〉1100°C. The Al2O3 reacts with MgO to form MgAl2O4 near the surface of the material. At the same time, B2O3(l) evaporates and reacts with MgO, to form a liquid phase, at 〉1333°C, the eutectic point between 3MgO·B2O3 and MgO. The coexistence of the liquid and MgAl2O4 makes the protective layer more dense, thus inhibiting oxidation of the refractory. At 〉1333°C, the process apparently is controlled by oxygen diffusion, whereas it is controlled by chemical reaction when the temperature is 〈1333°C.
