Notes: Abstract Medulloblastoma constituted 28% of brain neoplasms among children referred to the Santobono Children's Hospital of Naples from 1973 through October 1984. The authors summarize their experience with 68 cases of medulloblastoma, which were managed with a multimodal institutional protocol involving surgery, chemotherapy and radiation therapy. The evolution of modern management is discussed, and particular attention is directed to the factors affecting the prognosis.

Notes: Abstract The criteria by which the operative approaches to craniopharyngioma are chosen are still controversial. The authors performed a retrospective analysis in 32 patients with craniopharyngioma who were surgically treated. Results of neurological and psychological tests administered during the follow-up period were correlated with the surgical approach. On the basis of these preliminary data and a maximum follow-up period of 10 years, the authors conclude that the subfrontal approach to the craniopharyngioma and partial removal of its solid part appears to be associated with a lower morbidity rate and minor frontal lobe disorders.

Notes: Abstract A giant aneurysm of the right callosomarginal artery is reported in a 3-month-old child. This location is rare: including our case reported here, only three cases have been described. Clinicoradiological findings are presented and the surgical procedure is illustrated.

Notes: Abstract In order to characterize neurological, intellectual and behavioral sequelae better after surgical treatment of brain abscess in childhood, 32 children were studied over a 10-year time span after treatment of a brain abscess. Depending on the clinical condition, surgical treatment consisted of simple aspiration through a burr hole or of total excision after craniotomy. There were only 3 postoperative deaths (9%). The scheduled time for long-term follow-up was 3 years after surgery. The patient assessment included information concerning the presence of seizures, accurate neurological examination, an EEG, and a battery of intellectual tests to evaluate the presence of behavioral-mental deficits. Late seizures developed in 7 of the 29 survivors. Five patients presented permanent hemiparesis after surgical treatment. It is noteworthy that the intellectual impairment observed was more severe in younger patients, while the behavioral disturbances were more marked in school-age children.

Notes: Abstract A recolonization field experiment of two different artificially disturbed sediments (both defaunated sand and defaunated/reduced sand through organic enrichment) was carried out in the Sacca di Goro (Adriatic sea, Po river Delta, Italy). Copepods showed themselves better colonizers than nematodes. In particular, copepods, in the defaunated sand, were able to reach the same densities as the control site after only seven days from the beginning of the experiment. In the reduced-sand, copepod recolonization occurred more slowly but reached the densities found in both azoic and control sediments at the end of the experiment (15 days), when the values of total carbon content decreased. The recovery evolution of the community structures was mostly dependent on the different behaviour of the active epibenthic species of the harpacticoids (e.g. Canuella perplexa T & A. Scott, 1893, Ameira parvula (Claus, 1866), Robertgurneya similis (A. Scott, 1896)) and of the passively transported endobenthic ones (e.g. Asellopsis sarmatica Jakubisiak, 1938, Ectinosoma dentatum Steuer, 1940).

Notes: Abstract In a lagoon (Valle Smarlacca) of the ‘Valli di Comacchio’ complex (Northern Adriatic Sea, Italy) a phytal habitat ( Ruppia sp.) was chosen to investigate the modifications and the following recovery of meiobenthic communities caused by induced hypoxic/anoxic disturbance. A field experiment was carried out by incubating, for three days, portions of seagrass meadow and adjacent unvegetated muddy sediment patches by means of dark benthic chambers. After these were removed, species of both nematodes and copepods showed a different degree of resistance to the induced disturbance. On the whole, on the small scale of the present experiment, meiobenthic communities appear highly resilient. As for nematodes, recolonization patterns of community recovery were differently influenced by the habitat. On bare sediment, community structure followed the natural evolution of the control habitat while, in the Ruppia meadow, community recovery showed more complex patterns according to the different behaviour of phytal and infaunal species, respectively. As for copepods, recolonization patterns were mainly driven by the dominant species of each habitat control. On the other hand, the heavier impact of disturbance on Ruppia and the slow restoration of its canopy seem to delay recolonization rates of copepod populations and differently affect the community recovery pattern.
