Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Die Reaktion von 3,4-Methylendioxyzimtsäure (1) mit Thionylchlorid ergab 7-Chlorothieno[2,3-f]-1,3-benzodioxol-6-carbonsärechlorid (2) und Zimtsäurechlorid (3).
Notes: Summary The reaction of 3,4-methylenedioxycinnamic acid (1) with thionyl chloride resulted in the formation of 7-chlorothieno[2,3-f]-1,3-benzodioxole-6-carbonyl chloride (2) and cinnamoyl chloride (3). Subsequent reaction of the former withp-substituted anilines led to the formation of 7-chloro-N-(p-substituted phenyl)-thieno[2,3-f]-1,3-benzodioxole-6-carboxamides (4a–c) which on photocyclization afforded 2-substituted [1,3]dioxolo[5,6][1]benzothieno[2,3-c]quinolin-6(5H)-ones (5a–c) in fairly good yields and high purity. The structures have been confirmed by IR,1H NMR, and analytical methods.

Notes: Abstract Attempts were made to find out the nature and cause of a widespread sugarcane chlorosis in a cane growing area. Soils from chlorotic and nonchlorotic fields did not differ markedly in pH, CaCO3, electrical conductivity, organic C, and soil test P, Zn, Cu, and Mn levels, but the chlorotic field soils had relatively more NH4OAc-extractable K and less clay and DTPA-extractable Fe. Chlorotic and green leaf blades contained about the same concentration of P, S, Mg, Fe, Zn, Cu, and Mo, but the former leaf blades had more K and less Ca and HCl soluble Fe than the green ones. Green leaves of plants that seemed to have naturally recovered in chlorotic fields were higher in Mn. A foliage spray with 2.5% FeSO4.7H2O solution resulted in greening of leaves and a field experiment showed marked crop response to Fe and some response to Mn. The results thus suggest that the chlorosis is due to a lime-induced Fe-deficiency with the possibility of some role of Mn in Fe nutrition in calcareous soil conditions.

Notes: Abstract The objective of this study, carried out over 2 years, was to evaluate the effect of soil properties on the response of maize (Zea mays L.) to zinc applications and relate these properties to soil test Zn for predicting the Zn status of soils considering the effect of environmental conditions. The relative yield, expressed as an index of crop response, was related through multiple regression to CEC (or clay), electrical conductivity (or exchangeable Na), and bulk density consistently throughout the two year period that included one relatively wet, cool and cloudy growing season when variations in relative yield were explained also by 0.5M NaHCO3-extractable-P and organic C. A procedure is presented to establish limits for the soil propeties and soil-test-extractable-Zn and to meaningfully combine them into a model to predict soil Zn status. A model that combined soil test Zn, texture and electrical conductivity was satisfactory for the purpose of prediction and for adoption for soil testing on a routine basis. The suggested approach may be suitable for designing models with soil properties associated with crop responses to micronutrients in other situations.

Notes: Abstract The hybrid derivatives ofNicotiana tabacum (2n=48) (female parent) andN. plumbaginifolia (2n=20) carried a variable number ofN. plumbaginifolia (pbg) chromosomes inN. tabacum (tbc) nuclei. Onepbg chromosome carried a gene for chlorophyll (Ws, pbg) and thetbc genome was homozygous recessive for the white seedling lociws 1,ws 1,ws 2.ws 2. The hybrid derivatives showed chlorophyll variegation. Thepbg chromosome, carrying the geneWs (pbg) for chlorophyll production, also carried information for a particular intensity of variegation. The alien chromosome formed anaphase bridges in the somatic tissue and led to subsequent loss of chromatin material having theWs pbg gene, resulting in leaf-color variegation. The intensity of this variegation was determined by information contained in this same chromosome. Either a chromatid type of breakage-fusion-bridge cycle, or formation of independent mitotic bridges by allocyclic segments ofpbg chromosomes, followed by their unequal breakage and restitution of the broken ends, has been hypothesized to be the cause of loss of chromatin material and subsequently of chlorophyll variegation.
