Notes: The interface structures of 4H-SiC/6H-SiC heterostructures formed in monocrystalline bulk silicon carbide were studied by high-resolution electron microscopy of cross-sectional specimens. The samples were grown on the (0001¯) C face of a 6H-SiC seed with in situ Ce doping. The observed transition region is atomically flat over regions of several hundreds nm. The transition from the initial 6H-SiC growth to the 4H-SiC growth happens all at once at certain thicknesses with the occurrence of only a few layers of 4H-SiC (6H-SiC) before (after) the transition. The atomic stacking sequence at the interface of the two polytype crystals can be resolved.

Notes: Four types of tricalcium aluminate solid solutions with different concentrations of Na2O and SiO2 were prepared and examined using an electron probe microanalyzer. The atomic ratios, including those determined in a previous study, were derived from the oxide compositions and provided excellent correlations between Ca and Na + Si (i.e., Ca = 3.003 − 0.48[Na + Si]), and Al and Si (Al = 1.997 − 1.02Si). Because the replacement reactions, Ca2+↔ 2Na+ and Ca2++ 2Al3+↔ 2Si4+, independently occur within the same crystal, these reactions have been simply combined together to generate a new formula, Na2xCa3−x−y(Al1−ySiy)2O6, where x is the amount of Ca substituted by Na, and y is the amount of Al substituted by Si. This formula leads to the equations Ca = 3 − 0.5[Na + Si] and Al = 2 − Si, which nicely account for the constrained chemical variation of the actual solid solutions with 0 ≤x 〈 0.049 and 0 ≤y 〈 0.073.

Notes: Abstract Using cine magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and echocardiography, we investigated the effects of candesartan cilexetil, a specific angiotensin II type 1 (AT1) receptor antagonist, on left ventricular (LV) mass and hemodynamics in patients with essential hypertension. Ten patients (four men and six women) with essential hypertension received candesartan cilexetil 2–8 mg/day orally for 8–12 weeks. After drug administration, systolic blood pressure (BP) decreased from 178.9 ± 17.2 mmHg (mean ± SD) to 150.2 ± 14.3 mmHg (P 〈 0.0001) and diastolic BP from 101.4 ± 6.5 mmHg to 87.8 ± 11.9 mmHg (P = 0.0021). Both MRI and echocardiography revealed a significant decrease in LV mass index (LVMI) after candesartan cilexetil. MRI indicated that LVMI decreased from 111.3 ± 31.3 g/m2 to 102.6 ± 32.1 g/m2 (P = 0.0484) and echocardiography that LVMI decreased from 123.9 ± 31.1 g/m2 to 115.8 ± 31.4 g/m2 (P = 0.0316). Total systemic vascular resistance decreased significantly during treatment with candesartan cilexetil in both MRI and echocardiography assessment, from 1847.2 ± 636.3 dynes·s·cm−5 to 1540.4 ± 432.0 dynes·s·cm−5 (P = 0.0034) on MRI and from 1820.4 ± 318.8 dynes·s·cm−5 to 1659.0 ± 317.7 dynes·s·cm−5 (P = 0.0060) on echocardiography. These findings suggest that candesartan cilexetil 2–8 mg/day orally for 8–12 weeks is beneficial in the regression of cardiac hypertrophy in patients with essential hypertension.
