    Notes: Distributions of internal states and kinetic energies are reported for the laser-induced desorption of NO from a platinum foil. Two desorption channels are observed, one with internal-state populations which are well fit by Boltzmann distribution functions that correspond to the peak surface temperature. The second desorption channel displays population distributions which are non-Boltzmann: kinetic energies exceed the peak surface temperature by a factor of (approximate)5; kinetic energies depend on J; the spin–orbit states are inverted; and the vibrational population exceeds that associated with the maximum surface temperature by a factor of 50. The wavelength dependence of the non-Boltzmann desorption signal suggests that a substrate mediated desorption process is operative.

    Notes: The internal and translational energy distributions of nitric oxide, which was desorbed from a cold polycrystalline platinum foil by laser-induced thermal desorption, were measured using a laser-excited fluorescence, time-of-flight technique. Under irradiation conditions which are estimated to produce a maximum surface temperature of 320 K, desorbed NO in quantum states with 25〈ER〈2162 cm−1 were represented by two distributions of molecules: a translationally energetic component with a mean kinetic energy 〈ET〉/2k which continuously increased from 1400 to 2650 K with increasing ER, a rotational temperature of TR=410 K, and a vibrational temperature of TV(approximate)900 K; and a slower component with 〈ET〉/2k=300 K and TR=170 K.

    Notes: A simple and powerful way to investigate the linear evolution of particle distribution functions in kinetic instabilities in a homogeneous collisionless plasma is presented. The method can be applied to any kind of instability, provided the characteristics (growth rate, frequency, wave vector, and polarization) of the mode are known and can also be used to estimate the amplitude of the waves at the end of the linear phase of growth. Two didactic examples are used to illustrate the versatility of the technique: the Alfvén Ion Cyclotron (AIC) instability, which is electromagnetic, and the Electron Ion Cyclotron (EIC) instability, which is electrostatic. © 1994 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Effective boundary conditions are derived to be used with the classical Hele–Shaw equations in calculating the shape and motion of a Hele–Shaw bubble. The main assumptions of this analysis are that the displaced fluid wets the plates, and that the capillary number Ca and the ratio of gap width to characteristic bubble length ε are both small. In a small region at the sides of the bubble, it is found that the thin-film thickness scales with ε2/5 Ca4/5, rather than the Ca2/3 scaling that is valid over most of the thin film above and below the bubble.

    Notes: Exact solutions are presented for a steady stream of bubbles in a Hele–Shaw cell when the effect of surface tension is neglected. These solutions form a three-parameter family. For specified area and distance between bubbles, the speed of the bubble remains arbitrary when surface tension is neglected. However, numerical and analytical evidence indicates that this arbitrariness is removed by the effect of surface tension. The branch of solutions that corresponds to the McLean–Saffman finger solution were primarily studied. A dramatic increase was observed in bubble speeds when the distance between bubbles is on the order of a bubble diameter, which may have relevance to experiments done by Maxworthy [J. Fluid Mech. 173, 95 (1986)].

    Notes: The spatial distribution of neutral deuterium has been determined in a reversed field pinch by fluorescence scattering. The first series of measurements, with a resolution of 4 cm were made with the laser tuned to the Dα, n=2−3(6561 A(ring)) transition. The second set of measurements, with both 4 and 2 cm resolution were performed with the laser tuned to the Dβn=2−4(4861 A(ring)) wavelength. The improvement in signal to noise obtained was substantial, being increased by a factor of (approximately-equal-to)2.5 in general. This is believed to be the first such measurement at this wavelength. The advantages of using this transition are such that this technique can be extended to measure the electron density near the plasma edge.

    Notes: An isolate of Gliocladium roseum proved highly antagonistic to Botrytis cinerea. Sporulation of B. cinerea on chickpea seed naturally infected or inoculated with B. cinerea was suppressed by seed treatment with conidial suspensions of G. roseum at 107 and 108 conidia/mL, respectively. Establishment of healthy seedlings in punnets (small trays) 5 weeks after sowing with inoculated seed was increased from 29.2% to 59.7% by treatment with G. roseum at 3×107 conidia/mL, and from 1.4% to 69.4% with G. roseum at 3×108 conidia/mL, the latter being equivalent to disease control by Thiram. There was no significant effect of Rhizobium on disease suppression by G. roseum, and treatment with G. roseum at 108 conidia/mL did not reduce nodulation. Amendment with culture filtrates of G. roseum did not affect the growth rate of B. cinerea on potato dextrose agar, indicating that constitutive production of an antibiotic is not involved in biocontrol. A selective medium was developed to enumerate propagules of G. roseum on seed recovered from soil. There was no significant change in the population of G. roseum on seed after incubation for 4 weeks in soil to which the isolate of G. roseum was indigenous.
