Notes: Abstract. Juvenile Atlantic salmon from a number of freshwater hatcheries in Scotland were found to be infected by a myxosporean parasite of the genus Sphaerospora. Fish first became infected in June by extrasporogonic stages which could be found in the blood and kidney interstitium. These consisted of a primary cell containing one to over one hundred secondary cells. Some secondary cells contained one or two tertiary cells. Sporogony was disporous and occurred later in the kidney tubules. The development of both extrasporogonic and sporogonic stages was studied by light and transmission electron microscopy.

Notes: Tetracapsula bryosalmonae, previously referred to as PKX, causes proliferative kidney disease (PKD) in salmonids and is an economically important myxozoan pathogen in salmonid culture. A variety of molecular and immunological tools have been developed to detect the parasite. To determine the specificity of four monoclonal antibodies (MAbs) raised against T. bryosalmonae, archive material of fish infected with various myxosporean species was obtained and immunostained. Wild fish were also collected from enzootic waters and examined for T. bryosalmonae infection using immunohistochemistry and the polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Three of the MAb probes appear to be specific for T. bryosalmonae while only two of the five sets of primers tested appeared to specifically amplify T. bryosalmonae DNA. The results of the immunostaining and the PCR demonstrate that T. bryosalmonae occurs in the tubules of grayling Thymallus thymallus L., brown trout, Salmo trutta L. and Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar L. outside of the PKD season (June-September) in the UK. This confirms the results of previous studies that these species are the preferred fish hosts for the parasite in the UK.

Notes: The results of comparative immunohisto-chemical staining studies with two lectin probes, GS-I and SBA, and five monoclonal antibodies raised against the PKX myxosporean are presented. In order to investigate the postulated link between PKX and Sphaerospora spp., the lectins and monoclonal antibodies were tested against PKX, Sphaerospora renicola, Sphaerospora oncorhynchi, Sphaerospora elegam, Sphaerospora truttae and Sphaero-spora sp. from Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar L., and Ceratomyxa shasta. SBA appears a useful tool for tbe diagnosis of all Sphaerospora spp. infections and was also positive for C. shasta. GS-I and monoclonal antibodies (12, C5, D4 and A3) appear to be specific for both the extrasporogonic and sporogonic stages of PKX. Although MabB4 was raised to PKX, it appears to stain some of the sporogonic stages of Sphaerospora spp. but not C. shasta. The results of the lectin and monoclonal staining of PKX and Sphaerospora oncorhynchi indicated that further work was required to prove or disprove the hypothesis that PKX and S, oncorhynchi are the same organism.

Notes: Abstract TheK andL x-rays emitted in the decay of235Np have been studied with high resolution Ge(HP) and Si(Li) detectors in coincidence, in order to obtain theL 2 andL 3 subshell fluorescence and Coster-Kronig yields atZ=92. The results are:v 2=0.630±0.036, ω2=0.560±0.033,f 23=0.147±0.010, and ω3=0.481±0.029. Results for theL 1 subshell were derived from singles spectra, by assuming a value off 13 of 0.67, and are:v 1=0.54±0.04, ω1=0.21±0.04, andf 12〈0.07. With the same assumption, theL 1/K electron capture ratio and decay energyQ ec for235Np were found to be 29.0±3.6 and 123.6±0.7 keV, respectively. RelativeL x-ray intensities forZ=92 also were measured and are compared with the theory of Scofield and with recent diffraction experiments. Electron ejection from theL shell during235Np decay has been studied byL x-ray-L x-ray coincidences and found to occur with a probability of (1.3±1.0) × 10−4 per disintegration.

Notes: Abstract MeanL-shell x-ray fluorescence yields $$(\bar \omega _L )$$ have been measured by observingK andL x-ray spectra emitted in the decay of109Cd,145Pm, and153Gd with a high resolution Si(Li) x-ray detector. The results forZ=47, 60, and 63 are as follows: $$\bar \omega _L $$ =0.0425±0.0064, 0.131±0.017, and 0.142±0.023, respectively. Additional values of $$\bar \omega _L $$ from this laboratory atZ=55, 56, 57, 59, and 65 are also tabulated as are previous experimental values atZ=47, 60, and 63. For comparison, theoretical estimates of $$\bar \omega _L $$ were computed using theoreticalL-subshell fluorescence and Coster-Kronig yields, together with subshell vacancy distributions calculated from the literature. The theoretical estimates atZ=47, 60, and 63, based on the subshell calculations of Chen, Crasemann, and Kostroun, agree well with experiment.

Notes: Abstract High resolution Si(Li)-Si(Li) and Si(Li)-Ge(Li) detector arrangements have been used to studyL x-ray spectra in coincidence withL-shell internal conversion electrons, gamma rays, andK x-rays emitted in249Cf decay. TheL 1 subshell fluorescence and Coster-Kronig yields determined forZ=96 from these spectra are ω1=0.25±0.06,f 12≦0.10, andf 13=0.69 ±0.08. The presence of theL 1-L 3 radiative transition is also further confirmed in this work.

Notes: Abstract.  The photon asymmetry Σ of the reaction has been measured across the photon energy range 160–410 MeV at the Mainz Microtron MAMI. Linearly polarized photons were obtained from coherent bremsstrahlung and their energies were determined with the Glasgow tagging spectrometer. The large acceptance detector DAPHNE enabled the outgoing protons to be measured over the complete azimuthal range and for polar angles from 35° to 155° in the c.m. system. The data are compared with existing results and recent theoretical calculations.

Notes: Abstract. An experiment on the radiative π{+}-meson photoproduction from the proton ( γp → γπ{+}n) was carried out at the Mainz Microtron MAMI in the kinematic region 537MeV 〈 Eγ 〈 817MeV, 140°≤ $ \theta_{{\gamma \gamma ^{\prime }}}^{{{{\rm cm}}}}$ ≤180°. The π{+}-meson polarizabilities have been determined from a comparison of the data with the predictions of two different theoretical models, the first one being based on an effective pole model with pseudoscalar coupling while the second one is based on diagrams describing both resonant and nonresonant contributions. The validity of the models has been verified by comparing the predictions with the present experimental data in the kinematic region where the pion polarizability contribution is negligible ( s1 〈 5mπ2) and where the difference between the predictions of the two models does not exceed 3%. In the region, where the pion polarizability contribution is substantial ( 5 〈 s1/mπ2 〈 15, -12 〈 t/mπ2 〈 - 2), the difference $\ensuremath{(\alpha -\beta )_{\pi^{+}}}$ of the electric (α) and the magnetic (β) polarizabilities has been determined. As a result we find $\ensuremath{(\alpha -\beta )_{\pi^{+}}=(11.6\pm 1.5_{{\rm stat}}\pm 3.0_{{\rm syst}}\pm 0.5_{{\rm mod}})\times 10^{-4}{}{\rm fm^{3}}}$ . This result is at variance with recent calculations in the framework of chiral perturbation theory.

Notes: Abstract TheL 2 andL 3 subshell fluorescence and Coster-Kronig yields forZ=96 have been measured by theK-L x-ray coincidence method with high resolution Si(Li) and Ge(Li) x-ray detectors. The results ν2=0.650±0.036, ω2=0.552±0.032, ω3=0.515±0.034, andf 23=0.188±0.019 agree fairly well with theory. New measurements of theL x-ray singles spectra of244Cm and238Pu with a high resolution Si(Li) detector permitted reevaluation of the values of ω2 andf 23 forZ=92 and 94 reported by Byrneet al. The revised values atZ=92 are ω2=0.529±0.035 andf 23=0.23±0.12, and atZ=94, ω2=0.523±0.023 andf 23=0.24±0.08. These revised values are in much better agreement with theory and with current experiments.
