Notes: The phospholipid pattern of human epidermis from 23 psoriatic patients and from 14 healthy in dividuals has been determined using lipid thin-layer chromatography. An increased amount of total phospholipids and statistically significant differences in some phospholipid components were found in psoriatic patients as compared to healthy controls. These abnormalities may be related to the altered architecture of the plasma membranes and their surface coats observed in psoriatic keratinocytes.

Notes: SUMMARY. Photosensitization of the skin by demethylchlortetracycline and sulphanilamide has been demonstrated in mice.Demethylchlortetracycline has an action spectrum extending from 350 to 420 nm with a peak at 400 nm; it is most effective in mice when given by the intradermal route, less effective intraperitoneally and without action orally.Sulphanilamide has a photosensitizing action spectrum from 375 to 400 nm, i.e. mostly in the visible spectrum, with less certain activity at 280–300 and 550–600 nm; it is effective intradermally and inactive orally. The majority of the photosensitizing effects of sulphanilamide must be due either to the alteration of its constitution in the skin, or to a metabolic change in the skin itself since sulphanilamide does not absorb visible light. Possible mechanisms are discussed and a speculative hypothesis is proposed that a local disturbance of porphyrin metabolism may be implicated.

Notes: Background PUVA has become a preferred method of treatment for vitiligo and psoriasis. However, 8-methoxypsoralen (8-MOP) as well as a high galactose diet may cause liver and kidney function damage and enhance cataract formation.Patients and Methods Twenty one patients aged 32 ± 2.6 yrs with vitiligo (N= 11) or psoriasis (N= 10) underwent eye-examination, liver and kidney function tests and galactose + galactose 1-phosphate (gal + gal P) blood evaluation using Porton-Cambridge Ltd reagents, before and after the 12th PUVA treatment during a 35–40 day study. Results All these functional tests including eye-examination were normal before and after commencing therapy. However, the mean gal + gal P blood levels (1.29 ± 0.41 mg/dl) were statistically elevated (2.95 ± 0.42 mg/dl) at the end of the study. It is suggested that 8-MOP either impairs liver function or acts as an inhibitor of the enzymes responsible for galactose metabolism. We propose gal + gal P blood estimation in all patients before and, at intervals, after the initiation of PUVA therapy in order to prevent as early as possible an additional risk factor for liver or kidney dysfunction as well as cataract formation.

Notes: Aim The aim of this study is to correlate the β-endorphin levels at the early and more chronic stages of the disease in an attempt to find or confirm an etiological factor of vitiligo. Background The exact pathogenesis of vitiligo is still unclear. The most important theories are the self destruction, the autoimmune and the neural theories. Methods Patients with vitiligo (n= 28) were divided into two groups according to the duration of their disease. A group of 15 members of medical staff was the control group. β-endorphin levels were determined with a radioimmunoassay (125I-β-endorphin IncstarCo).Results The mean β-endorphin levels (11.88 ± 2.25 pmol/l) in patients at the early years of the disease (Group A) were statistically elevated compared to those of patients with ‘chronic’ vitiligo (9.27 ± 2.73 pmol/l) and to those of controls (8.53 ± 2.53) pmol/l).Conclusion We suggest that high β-endorphin levels play a role in the pathogenesis of vitiligo as well as in the prognosis of the disease.

Notes: In this retrospective study on 141 HIV-positive subjects, allergy was studied by a specific questionnaire and the Phadia-Top-Test, an in vitro screening test detecting specific IgE; both were correlated to the patient's history, clinical symptoms and the treatment used. Allergy was studied in reference to HIV-negative controls and in relation to the clinical and biological subgroups of HIV patients. The application of the x2 test demonstrated a high incidence of allergy and a specific relation to the HIV infection compared to the controls as well as in relation to the clinical stage of the infection. Atopy was not specifically related to the HIV infection despite the higher frequency found in the AIDS-IKEL group.A significant number (21%) of patients with T4 〉 300/μ1 considered immunocompetent presented clinical manifestations of AIDS-IKEL and 100% of these patients were allergic. A significant number (19%) of patients with T4 〈 300/μ1 considered immunodeficient were asymptomatic and 75% of them were allergic. Thus allergic symptoms may transiently be the only clinical manifestations in HIV infection and possibly a co-factor for the evolution of the disease due to the immunomodulatory function of the mediators, the cytokines and the proteases released during allergic reaction.

Notes: : Seven cattle barns were investigated during the years 1976 through 1977. Six of these barns located in central Euboea have been characterized as “suspect” barns because one or more persons working in these barns had been infected by dermatomycosis. The seventh bam serving as control was located on the opposite side of the Boeotic coast. A total of 60 “suspected as infected” animals were isolated from all these barns. Twenty-one of them (35%) gave positive cultures for dermatophytes in Sabouraud medium. Of the 1Li “healthy” animals that were examined, 28 (24.8%) gave positive cultures. The only pathogenic strain of dermatophyte that was isolated was the Trichophyton mentagrophytes var. granulare.
