    Notizen: In order to determine more precisely the location of the barley leaf stripe gene, called the ‘Vada-resistance gene’, on barley chromosome 2, 63 chromosome-doubled barley lines were tested. Using data on known chromosome 2 genetic markers, the ‘Vada-resistance gene’ was estimated to be located between the markers MSU21 and Xris45b, and at a distance of about 20% recombination from the powdery mildew resistance gene MILa. We suggest that the ‘Vada-resistance gene’ is designated Rdg1a and that all former leaf stripe resistance gene designations should be rejected.To identify possible new sources of resistance, 11 barley cultivars/lines known to possess leaf stripe resistance and originating from different parts of the world, were tested with one Danish and two Syrian isolates of the leaf stripe fungus. Three apparently genetically different sources of race-specific resistance were found. The ‘Vada-resistance’ in the cultivar ‘Golf was effective against seven out of eight isolates’ populations of the leaf stripe fungus differing in geographical origin.

    Notizen: A review of data on powdery mildew resistance genes in the Mla locus of barley reveals that there are at least 12 clusters of genes present, each comprising one Mla gene and one or more closely linked, additional resistance genes. Tentative designations are listed for 16 additional resistance genes. Many sources of powdery mildew resistance in barley appear to harbour multigene families in the Mla region, not single ‘superior’genes.

    Notizen: Summary The linkage relationship among the loci Hor1, Hor2, Ml-k and Ml-a on the short arm of chromosome 5 was studied by progeny testing the F2 generation of two crosses. The loci Hor1 and Hor2 code for polypeptides of the storage protein hordein (prolamin) and the loci Ml-k and Ml-a determine the resistance reaction with some powdery mildew fungi cultures. The order of the loci is Ml-k, Hor1, Ml-a, and Hor2, the first named being nearest the centromere. The recombination percentage between Hor1 and Hor2 was determined in the F1 and F2 generations in both crosses, the combined estimate being 7.4±0.9 per cent. The recombination percentage estimated between Ml-k and Hor1 was 4.0±1.3, between Hor1 and Ml-a, 5.3±1.1, and between Ml-a and Hor2, 6.1±1.2. The estimates involving the Ml- loci were all probably a little too high.

    Notizen: Abstract A three-center collaborative study was performed with the aim of determining the reproducibility of disk diffusion and broth microdilution susceptibility tests ofHaemophilus influenzae with 19 different antimicrobial agents using a newly described medium, Haemophilus Test Medium. The results of both methods were found to be highly reproducible. Using Haemophilus Test Medium, inhibitory zone diameters and MICs were then determined for 150 test strains ofHaemophilus influenzae, selected with an emphasis on known mechanisms of resistance. Regression analysis of zone diameter-MIC comparisons was used to define zone diameter interpretive criteria and MIC correlates for Haemophilus Test Medium disk diffusion tests performed withHaemophilus spp. for the following antimicrobial agents: ampicillin, amoxicillin/clavulanate, ampicillin/sulbactam, cefaclor, cefuroxime, cefamandole, ceftriaxone, cefotaxime, ceftizoxime, ceftazidime, cefixime, trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole, rifampin, chloramphenicol, tetracycline, imipenem, aztreonam and ciprofloxacin.

    Notizen: Abstract Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) was a rare occurrence in US hospitals until the mid-1970s. Since that time outbreaks of MRSA infection have been reported in both large and small hospitals, in rehabilitation facilities, and in nursing homes. Transmission has been documented not only between hospitals, but between long-term care facilities and hospitals, and between the community and hospitals. Patient-to-patient spread within hospitals appears to result from transient colonization of the hands of health care workers, with colonized or infected patients being the intrahospital reservoir for the organisms. The best opportunity for control of outbreaks of MRSA infection within hospitals may depend on the rapid recognition of newly admitted patients who are colonized or infected. The laboratory plays a crucial role in this by providing prompt and accurate information indicating the presence of MRSA. Susceptibility test methods found to be most reliable for detecting MRSA in the USA include the broth microdilution MIC determination (performed in salt-supplemented broth), the Bauer-Kirby test with slight modification, or oxacillin-salt agar screening plates.

    Notizen: Abstract To compare the adherence properties ofStaphylococcus saprophyticus andStaphylococcus epidermidis in vitro studies were conducted with clinical isolates and cell culture monolayers (Hela, Vero, MDCK).Staphylococcus saprophyticus exhibited greater cell adherence, but no significant difference in mean urine growth rate. Its cell-adherence properties seem to explain in part its virulence.

    Notizen: Abstract The in vitro activity of the new lipopeptide antibiotic LY146032 was generally four-fold greater (MIC 90 ⩽ 0. 5μg/ml) than that of vancomycin against methicillin-susceptible or methicillin-resistantStaphybcoccus aureus and coagulase-negative species ofStaphylococcus. Enterococci,Streptococcus bovis, group B and viridans streptococci, andCorynebacterium group J-K isolates were inhibited by ≤ 4μg/ml of LY146032, which represented activity equivalent to or greater than that of vancomycin. Unlike vancomycin, LY146032 was bactericidal forEnterococcus faecalis, Enterococcus faecium andListeria monocytogenes. Due to its bactericidal properties LY146032 appeared to represent an improvement over vancomycin and teicoplanin.
