Summary Methods for the quantification of the diagnostic process are essential for the use of computers in diagnostic work. The methods treated here are: Comparisons starting from lists of symptoms and diseases without or with weighting of symptoms; probabilistic approaches according to Bayes' formula; discriminatory methods; factor analysis; optimal solutions with respect to the therapeutical risks. The valuation of these methods for their practical use cannot be performed theoretically for several reasons: the diagnostic task differs in different empirical data; but even for a given set of data the task cannot be formulated exactly in the mathematical sense; there are many problems with respect to the selection and definition of symptoms, their intercorrelation, the definition of control groups and the morbidity rates as the basic starting points in the Bayes' formula. The influence of these problems on the possible statements from probability and discrimination methods is discussed. Reference is made to the former discussion of the mathematical treatment of the anthropological diagnoses of paternity from similarity between child and presumptive father. This discussion in the German literature relates to analogous problems, and is hardly known in USA. The methodological problems of the quantitative diagnosis need still careful analysis before their complete readiness for application.
Notizen:
