    Notizen: Abstract  Intensive pastoralism with goats transforms semiarid thicket in the Eastern Cape, South Africa from a dense vegetation of tall shrubs to an open landscape dominated by ephemeral grasses and forbs. Approx. 800 000 ha of thicket (which prior to the introduction of goats had a closed canopy and a Portulacaria afra Jacq. component) have been transformed in this manner. Ecosystem C storage in intact thicket and loss of C due to transformation were quantified. Carbon storage in intact thicket was surprisingly high for a semiarid region, with an average of 76 t C ha−1 in living biomass and surface litter and 133 t C ha−1 in soils to a depth of 30 cm. Exceptional C accumulation in thicket may be a result of P. afra dominance. This succulent shrub switches between C3 and CAM photosynthesis, produces large quantities of leaf litter (approx. 450 g m−2 year−1) and shades the soil densely. Transformed thicket had approx. 35% less soil C to a depth of 10 cm and approx. 75% less biomass C than intact thicket. Restoration of transformed thicket landscapes could consequently recoup more than 80 t C ha−1.

    Notizen: Abstract Objective: To study the effects of rifampicin, a potent inducer of the microsomal P 450 enzyme system and of specific isoforms of the uridine 5′-diphosphate(UDP)-glucuronyl-transferase enzyme system, and cimetidine, a known inhibitor of the hepatic microsomal cytochrome P 450 enzyme system, on pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of lamotrigine in healthy subjects. Methods: Ten healthy male subjects received a single oral dose of 25 mg lamotrigine after a 5-day pretreatment with (1) cimetidine 800 mg divided into two equal doses, (2) rifampicin 600 mg, or (3) placebo. Serum and urine samples were analyzed using high-performance liquid chromatography. Changes in electroencephalographic (EEG) power were determined up to 48 h after lamotrigine administration. Results: The values of the pharmacokinetic parameters of lamotrigine were: clearance over bioavailability (CL/F) 2.60 ± 0.40 l/h, renal clearance (CLR) 0.10 ± 0.03 l/h, terminal half-life (t 1/2) 23.8 ± 2.1 h, mean peak serum concentration (Cmax) 0.29 ± 0.02 μg/l, time to reach Cmax (tmax) 1.6 ± 0.28 h, and total area under the serum concentration-time curve (AUC0–∞) 703.99 ± 82.31 μg/ml/min (mean ± SEM). The amount of lamotrigine excreted as glucuronide was 8.90 ± 0.77 mg. Rifampicin significantly increased CL/F (5.13 ± 1.05 l/h) and the amount of lamotrigine excreted as glucuronide (12.12 ± 0.94 mg), whereas both t 1/2 (14.1 ± 1.7 h) and AUC0–∞ (396.24 ± 60.18 μg/ml/min) were decreased (P 〈 0.05). Cimetidine failed to affect pharmacokinetics of lamotrigine. Lamotrigine did not change EEG power. Conclusion: Rifampicin altered pharmacokinetics of lamotrigine due to induction of the hepatic enzymes responsible for glucuronidation, while coadministration of cimetidine to ongoing lamotrigine therapy has negligible effects on lamotrigine pharmacokinetics. Lamotrigine administered as a single dose of 25 mg has no effect on EEG power in healthy subjects.

    Notizen: Summary The absorption of talinolol (TA) 50 mg was investigated without and together with the co-administration of sulfasalazine (SASP) 4 g in 11 healthy young volunteers, in order to clarify gastrointestinal transit of TA. Without SASP, the tmax of TA was 2.8 h, Cmax was 112 ng·ml−1 and the half life was 12 h; the AUCo-t was 958 ng·ml−1·h. In the case of concomitant administration of SASP, TA was found only in serum from 3 individuals, with a Cmax of 23 ng·ml−1 and a mean AUCo-t of 84 ng·ml−1·h. TA was not detectable in 5 subjects and it was at the limit of detection (2 ng·ml−1) in 3 subjects. Pharmacokinetic analysis was not possible in any of those individuals. The reason for the interaction appears to be the adsorption of TA by SASP. An interval of 2–3 h should elapse between giving SASP and other drugs.

    Notizen: Abstract The formation of aqueous, lyotropic phases of the biopolymers xanthan (M η = 1.6·106) and schizophyllan (M W = 335 000) is investigated with stationary shear flow and oscillatory measurements, as well as with the aid of polarization microscopy, because these polymers show very different viscoelastic properties from coiled vinyl polymers. Xanthan and schizophyllan exhibit the same typical behavior observed in anisotropic solutions when the viscosity is plotted as a function of concentration and of shear rate. It has also been observed that the first normal stress difference for concentrated xanthan solutions shows a saturation effect at increasing shear rate. In oscillatory measurements only schizophyllan exhibits an maximum for the storage modulus. The absence of a such an elasticity maximum in the case of the xanthan solution may be attributed to the significantly higher flexibility of the xanthan helix. A comparison of the critical concentrations calculated according to Flory's theory and the experimentally determined values shows that the two-phase region is distinctly broader than the theory predicts. This deviation cannot be attributed to the flexibility of the polymer, but can, however, be explained by intermolecular interactions. In contrast to the non-charged schizophyllan the polyelectrolyte xanthan is affected in addition to the attractive interactions (H-bonds) by electrostatic repulsion forces.

    Beschreibung / Inhaltsverzeichnis: Basing on recent results of modelling discontinuous and continuous emulsion polymerization processes a mathematical model of the emulsion polymerization of butadiene with styrene is established. Partially the model can be applied to large-scale plants. Generally, however, its application requires particular adaption to large-scale conditions. Based on the kinetic concept a method for the continuous determination of the degree of activation at the inlet of the stirring vessel cascade is described.
    Notizen: Ausgehend vom gegenwärtigen Stand der Modellierung von Emulsionspolymerisationen bei diskontinuierlicher und kontinuierlicher Prozeßführung wurde ein mathematisches Modell zur Anwendung bei der Butadien-Styren-Emulsions-polymerisation entwickelt. Es kann gezeigt werden, daß Teile des kinetischen Modells auf die technische Anlage übertragbar sind, generell aber zur Anpassung großtechnische Untersuchungen notwendig sind. Weiterhin wird aus den kinetischen Vorstellungen eine Methode zur kontinuierlichen Bestimmung des Aktivierungsgrades am Eingang der Rührkesselkaskade entwickelt und dargelegt.
