Notes: Summary We consider the finite element approximation of a quasi-Newtonian flow, where the viscosity obeys the Carreau or power law. For sufficiently regular solutions we prove energy type error bounds for the velocity and pressure. These bounds improve on existing results in the literature.

Notes: Abstract A new spectral Galerkin method is proposed for the convection-dominated convection-diffusion equation. This method employs a new class of trail function spaces. The available error bounds provide a clear theoretical interpretation for the higher accuracy of the new method compared to the conventional spectral methods when applied to problems with thin boundary layers. Efficient solution techniques are developed for the convection-diffusion equations by using appropriate basis functions for the new trial function spaces. The higher accuracy and the effectiveness of the new method for problems with thin boundary layers are confirmed by our numerical experiments.

    Notes: Abstract In this paper, we establish some error bounds for the continuous piecewise linear finite element approximation of the following problem: Let Ω be an open set in ℝ d , withd=1 or 2. GivenT〉0,p ∈ (1, ∞),f andu 0; findu ∈K, whereK is a closed convex subset of the Sobolev spaceW 0 1,p (Ω), such that for anyv∈K $$\begin{gathered} \int\limits_\Omega {u_1 (\upsilon - u) dx + } \int\limits_\Omega {\left| {\nabla u} \right|^{p - 2} } \nabla u \cdot \nabla (\upsilon - u) dx \geqslant \int\limits_\Omega {f(\upsilon - u) dx for} a.e. t \in (0,T], \hfill \\ u = 0 on \partial \Omega \times (0,T] and u(0,x) = u_0 (x) for x \in \Omega . \hfill \\ \end{gathered} $$ We prove error bounds in energy type norms for the fully discrete approximation using the backward Euler time discretisation. In some notable cases, these error bounds converge at the optimal rate with respect to the space discretisation, provided the solutionu is sufficiently regular.

Notes: Abstract A generalized primal-relaxed dual algorithm for global optimization is proposed and its convergence is proved. The (GOP) algorithm of Floudas and Visweswaran (Refs. 1–2) is shown to be a special case of this general algorithm. Within the proposed framework, the algorithm of Floudas and Visweswaran (Refs. 1–2) is further extended to the nonsmooth case. A penalty implementation of the extended (GOP) algorithm is studied to improve its efficiency.

Notes: Abstract General optimality conditions are obtained for optimal shape design for systems governed by a class of elliptic variational inequalities. The conditions are established by making use of the necessary conditions for optimal control of systems governed by strongly monotone variational inequalities. These conditions are then applied to an electrochemical machining problem.

Notes: Abstract Some general existence results for optimal shape design problems for systems governed by elliptic variational inequalities are established by the mapping method and variational convergence theory. Then, an existence theorem is given for the optimal shape for an electrochemical machining problem, in which the cost functional is not lower semicontinuous, by extending the general results to this case. Furthermore, this problem is approximated by a set of optimal shape design problems which have more smooth cost functionals and are easier to handle computationally.
