Notes: Summary This paper is a continuation of our previous work [10] on projection methods. We study first existing “higher order” projection schemes in the semidiscretized form for the Navier-Stokes equations. One error analysis suggests that the precision of these schemes is most likely plagued by the inconsistent Neumann boundary condition satisfied by the pressure approximations. We then propose a penalty-projection scheme for which we obtain improved error estimates.

Notes: Summary. A Laguerre-Galerkin method is proposed and analyzed for the Burgers equation and Benjamin-Bona-Mahony (BBM) equation on a semi-infinite interval. By reformulating these equations with suitable functional transforms, it is shown that the Laguerre-Galerkin approximations are convergent on a semi-infinite interval with spectral accuracy. An efficient and accurate algorithm based on the Laguerre-Galerkin approximations to the transformed equations is developed and implemented. Numerical results indicating the high accuracy and effectiveness of this algorithm are presented.

Notes: The forehead sweating function has been assessed in SUNCT syndrome-a short-lasting, unilateral, neuralgifonn headache syndrome with autonomic phenomena on the symptomatic side (conjunctival injection, lacrimation, etc.). In the three patients (of a total of six) who could be studied during paroxysms, increased evaporation was present on the symptomatic side of the forehead compared to the non-symptomatic side during attacks or to the symptomatic side between attacks. Basal sweating was generally within control limits, so long as the attack frequency was not so high as to influence the interictal level. During attacks precipitated by eating chocolate or sour apple (in the case of one of the patients), forehead sweating was also increased on the symptomatic side. The forehead sweating responses to heating and pilocarpine were without any notable or systematic asymmetries. The forehead sweating pattern in SUNCT syndrome may differ from the patterns in unilateral headaches like cluster headache, on the one hand (in which there is generally an asymmetry during heating and pilocarpine tests), and chronic paroxysmal hemicrania (CPH) and cervicogenic headache, on the other (where there is no systematic increase during attacks).

Notes: Since most literature on international performance appraisal is derived from Western MNCs, it is questionable whether the Western theories are equally powerful when applied to other national contexts. This study develops the Chinese international performance appraisal model by exploring performance appraisal policies and practices and the associated factors in Chinese MNCs. It reveals that Chinese MNCs adopt different approaches towards different groups, particularly different nationalities and managerial status. The Chinese international performance appraisals are a mix of home and local appraisal systems, and a mix of traditional Chinese personnel management and modern Western HRM concepts. Moreover, Chinese international performance appraisal policies and practices are affected by various host-contextual and firm-specific factors, and there is also an interplay between international performance and other international human resource management activities.

Notes: Abstract A new spectral Galerkin method is proposed for the convection-dominated convection-diffusion equation. This method employs a new class of trail function spaces. The available error bounds provide a clear theoretical interpretation for the higher accuracy of the new method compared to the conventional spectral methods when applied to problems with thin boundary layers. Efficient solution techniques are developed for the convection-diffusion equations by using appropriate basis functions for the new trial function spaces. The higher accuracy and the effectiveness of the new method for problems with thin boundary layers are confirmed by our numerical experiments.

Notes: Purpose - This article aims to outline the theoretical perspectives of international training and development and examine how theoretical frameworks have been implemented by practitioners. Design/methodology/approach - Literature review. Findings - There appears to be a considerable gap between academic theories and multinational enterprises' (MNEs') practices. MNEs pay little attention to international training and management development. Ineffective international training and management development have a considerably adverse impact on MNEs. Practical implications - In order to succeed in a globally competitive environment MNEs need to effectively train expatriates and their spouses, host-country nationals (HCNs) and third-country nationals (TCNs), and develop and nurture a truly global management team. Originality/value - This paper systematically reviews the existing literature and reveals a considerable gap between academic theories and MNEs' practices.

Notes: Abstract Purpose. To characterize organic cation (OC) transport in primary cultured rabbit alveolar epithelial cell monolayers, using [l4C]-guanidine as a model substrate. Methods. Type II alveolar epithelial cells from the rabbit lung were isolated by elastase digestion and cultured on permeable filters pre-coated with fibronectin and collagen. Uptake and transport studies of [14C]-guanidine were conducted in cell monolayers of 5 to 6 days in culture. Results. The cultured alveolar epithelial cell monolayers exhibited the characteristics of a tight barrier. [14C]-Guanidine uptake was temperature dependent, saturable, and inhibited by OC compounds such as amiloride, cimetidine, clonidine, procainamide, propranolol, tetraethyl-ammonium, and verapamil. Apical guanidine uptake (Km = 129 ± 41 μM, Vmax = 718 ± 72 pmol/mg protein/5 min) was kinetically different from basolateral uptake (Km = 580 ± 125 (μM, Vmax = 1,600 ± 160 pmol/mg protein/5 min). [14C]-Guanidine transport across the alveolar epithelial cell monolayer in the apical to basolateral direction revealed a permeability coefficient (Papp) of (7.3 ± 0.4) × 10-7 cm/sec, about seven times higher than that for the paracellular marker [14C]-mannitol. Conclusions. Our findings are consistent with the existence of carrier-mediated OC transport in cultured rabbit alveolar epithelial cells.

Notes: Abstract Purpose. A knowledge of the interfacial properties of lecithin underpins our understanding of many of the physicochemical characteristics of drug delivery systems such as liposomes and lecithin stabilized microemulsions. In order to further this understanding, a high frequency dielectric study of the interfacial properties of egg lecithin liposomes was undertaken. Methods. The effect of temperature, lecithin concentration and probe sonication on the interfacial dielectric properties of liposomal suspensions was investigated by high frequency dielectric relaxation spectroscopy between 0.2–6 GHz. Results. The frequency dependent permittivity of each suspension exhibited a dielectric dispersion centred around 100 MHz, corresponding to the relaxation of zwitterionic head groups. The activation energy for head group reorientation was estimated as ΔH = 6.3 kJ mol−1. There was an increase in extent of inter-head group interactions on increasing the liposome volume fraction, whereas the effect of probe sonication showed that: (i) head groups in both the outer and inner lamellae contribute to the dielectric response; (ii) the head groups may be less restricted in liposomes of high surface curvature with few lamellae; (iii) the high frequency permittivity of the suspension increased on sonication, as a result of a reduction in the amount of (depolarized) interlamellar water following a reduction in the number of lamellae per liposome. Conclusions. Dielectric analysis of the zwitterionic head groups of lecithin therefore provides a means for investigating the surface of lecithin liposomes, and may be used to investigate the effect of drugs and other solutes on membranes.
