Notes: The production of β-galactosidase by an autolytic strain of Streptococcus salivarius subsp thermophilus 11F was investigated in batch and fed-batch 2-L working volume stirred tank bioreactors. β-Galactosidase was released into the medium upon cell lysis within 1–2 h after the maximum biomass quantity was reached. In batch fermentations the highest β-galactosidase activity of 69 U ml−1 was obtained when the temperature was increased to 42°C after a 4-h growth period at 30°C. In fed-batch experiments the highest β-galactosidase activity of 74 U ml−1 was obtained at a constant 37°C.

Notes: Summary On-line control of amino acid fermentations is complicated by uncertainties typical of biological processes and by difficulties in real-time monitoring of key process variables. Lysine is an essential amino acid in human nutrition, and also widely used in animal feed formulations. The paper discusses the construction and application of feed-forward, back-propagation neural networks as software ‘sensors’ in state estimation, and multi-step ahead prediction of produced lysine and consumed sugar. Neural networks were programmed in MS Visual C++ for Windows for implementation in a PC, with a userfriendly interface for convenience and ease of operation. It is demonstrated that a well trained neural network of optimal architecture can be succesfsully used in control of amino acid production

Notes: Abstract Phase transformations and microstructural changes of an as-cast eutectoid Zn-Al alloy (ZnAl22Cu2) were investigated during isothermal holding. The typical dendritic structures consisted of α′s phase as a core with the edge of decomposed β′s phase and decomposed η′s in the interdendritic regions. A series of complex phase transformations was observed. Both decompositions of β′s and η′s were determined at an early stage of ageing and a four-phase transformation, αf+ɛ→T′+η, was observed at the boundaries of αf phase and the ɛ phase, instead of clearly observed at the boundaries of ɛ phase, in a solution-treated Zn-Al alloy during prolonged ageing.

Notes: Abstract Phase transformation and microstructural change of a furnace-cooled eutectoid Zn–Al alloy specimen (76 wt% Zn–22 wt% Al–2 wt% Cu) were investigated during creep testing by using scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction techniques. Creep-induced decomposition of a metastable η′T phase and a four-phase transformation, α+ε→T′+η, occurred during the creep testing. Also microstructural change was observed from a lammellar structure partially into a spheroidized structure in the rupture part of the furnace-cooled alloy. The mechanism of the creep rupture of the furnace-cooled eutectoid Zn–Al alloy was also discussed.

Notes: Abstract Ageing characteristics of an extruded eutectoid Zn-Al based alloy were investigated using X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy techniques. The extruded alloy consisted of Al rich α phase and Zn rich ηE′ and ∈ phases. The original cast eutectoid Zn-Al alloy was extruded at 250 °C. Both supersaturated αs′ and βs′ phase decomposed during extrusion and appeared as fine and coarse lamellar structures. The ηE′ and ∈ phases particles formed in the original interdendritic region. It was found that two Zn rich phases ηE′ and ∈ decomposed sequentially during ageing at 170, 140 °C. The decomposition of the ηE′ phase occurred as a discontinuous precipitation in the early stage of ageing and the decomposition of the ∈ phase took place in a four phase transformation: α + ∈ → T′ + η in the prolonged ageing. Two typical morphologies of the decomposition of the Zn rich phases ηE′ and ∈ were distinctive in back-scattered scanning electron microscopy.
