    Notes: A cross-sectional study among 46 xerostomic patients was carried out to determine the influence of a mucin-based artificial saliva on the microflora of standardized oral washings. Patient and non-xerostomic control groups were formed according to the use of saliva substitute (ad libitum or from an intraoral reservoir) and dentition (dentate, edentulous, full dentures). Only few differences were observed among the subgroups based on dentition within a specified salivary group. However, the total number of microorganisms and the proportions of veillonellae, actinomycetes, streptococci and S. salivarius were significantly reduced in xerostomic patients not using artificial saliva, whereas lactobacilli, Candida and S. mitior were significantly increased compared to the control groups. Ad libitum use of artificial saliva had little effect, but semi-continuous wetting of the oral cavity through an intra-oral reservoir reversed the xerostomia-induced shifts in the indigenous microflora. However, no significant effect was observed on the proportions of lactobacilli and yeasts, leaving a potentially acidogenic flora.

    Notes: Apparent viscosities at different shear rates were measured for 3 types of saliva substitutes: (a) mucin-containing saliva; (b) substitutes based upon carboxymethylcellulose (CMC), and (c) solution of polyethylenoxide (PEO). The apparent viscosities were compared with those of human whole saliva. Human whole saliva and mucin-containing saliva substitutes appeared to be similar in their rheological properties. Both types of solution are viscoelastic solutions and adjust their apparent viscosities to their biological functions. Preparations containing CMC or PEO are non-Newtonian liquids. From this study it is concluded that mucin-containing saliva substitutes appear to be the best substitutes for natural saliva, as far as rheological properties are concerned.

    Notes: The rehardening properties of four saliva substitutes on artificially softened human enamel have been investigated by microhardness measurements. The saliva substitutes were all based on the same formula, containing calcium, phosphate and fluoride as the main electrolytes, and mucin or carboxymethylcellulose as the main macromolecules. It has been shown that a rehardening potential exists in the saliva substitutes when calcium and phosphate are present. Omitting F− greatly reduces the rehardening potential. The rehardening is better in case of the CMC-containing saliva than in that containing mucin.

    Notes: Abstract At the air-liquid interface of human saliva a protein layer is adsorbed. An apparatus is described with which a flow curve of this layer was measured. In the majority of samples the viscosity of the surface layer changed gradually and could be described by a power-law dependence on the shear rate. The zero-shear viscosity was 1–100 MPa·s. In some saliva samples a sharp yield point was observed.

    Notes: Abstract Cells ofPseudomonas aeruginosa were grown in a synthetic medium containing allantoin as the sole source of carbon, nitrogen and energy. The specific activity of allantoicase in the cell-free extract amounted to 7 units/mg protein. The enzyme was purified 190 times by treatment of the extract at 72 C in the presence of Mn2+ions and chromatography on Ecteola-cellulose.
