    Notes: The refractive indices of Cd1−xMnxTe and Cd1−yMgyTe (0〈x〈0.28 and 0〈y〈0.70) were determined by analyzing interference fringes in reflectivity spectra of thin films grown by molecular beam epitaxy. It is shown that their dispersions in the transparent region at 4 K are well described by a Sellmeier relation. These results have been applied to grow CdMnTe/CdMgTe Bragg mirrors incorporated in a II–VI microcavity operating in the strong exciton-photon coupling regime. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Glutamate receptor phosphorylation has been implicated in several forms of modulation of synaptic transmission. It has been reported that protein kinase A (PKA) can phosphorylate the α-amino-3-hydroxy-5-methyl-4-isoxazolepropionate (AMPA) receptor subunit GluR4 on Ser842, both in vitro and in vivo. Here, we studied the regulation of GluR4 phosphorylation and intracellular trafficking by PKA and by metabotropic receptors coupled to adenylyl cyclase (AC), in cultured chick retinal amacrine-like neurones, which are enriched in GluR4. The regulation of AMPA receptor activity by PKA and by metabotropic AC-coupled receptors was also investigated by measuring the [Ca2+]i response to kainate in Na+-free medium. Stimulation of AC with forskolin (FSK), or using the selective agonist of dopamine D1 receptors (±)-1-phenyl-2,3,4,5-tetrahydro-(1H)-3-benzazepine-7,8-diol (SKF38393), increased the [Ca2+]i response to kainate, GluR4 phosphorylation at Ser842 and GluR4 surface expression. Pre-incubation of the cells with (2S,2′R,3′R)-2-(2′,3′-dicarboxycyclopropyl)glycine (DCG-IV), an agonist of group II metabotropic glutamate receptors (mGluR), which are coupled to inhibition of AC, inhibited the effect of FSK and of SKF38393 on AMPA receptor activity, GluR4 phosphorylation and expression at the plasma membrane. These results indicate that there is a functional cross-talk between dopamine D1 receptors and group II mGluR in the regulation of GluR4 phosphorylation and AMPA receptor activity. Our data show that GluR4 phosphorylation at Ser842 by PKA, and its recruitment to the plasma membrane upon phosphorylation, is regulated by metabotropic receptors.

    Notes: This paper proposes a novel direct casting method of alumina suspensions using alginic acid salt and the coagulation agent hydroxyaluminum diacetate (HADA). These two compounds allowed the consolidation of alumina suspensions through a simultaneous time-delayed physical and chemical gelation process. The physical gel was formed by the gradual release of aluminum and acetate ions from the HADA in water, while the chemical gel originated from the cross-linking of alginate molecules by the polyvalent aluminum ions. Wet alumina green bodies displayed enhanced mechanical properties with the addition of minimal contents of organic material (〈0.1 wt%).

    Notes: This paper reports on the use of Jack bean meal as an alternative source of urease for direct coagulation casting (DCC) processes. Al2O3 suspensions were prepared to compare the effect of Jack bean meal and pure urease on the hydrolysis of urea, the slurry coagulation rate, and the mechanical properties of consolidated bodies. Results indicate that the Jack bean meal is a promising economic alternative for the consolidation of ceramic parts, mainly because of its lower susceptibility to enzyme deactivation when exposed to room temperature and relatively humid environments.

    Notes: Coagulation methods originally developed for colloidal processing were investigated in this paper as alternative approaches to consolidate high-alumina refractory castables free of hydraulic binders (zero-cement). Three in situ reactions based on the direct coagulation casting (DCC) technique were evaluated to promote castable coagulation: (1) the autocatalytic hydrolysis of gluconic acid lactone, (2) the gradual dissolution of hydroxyaluminum diacetate particles in water, and (3) the enzyme-catalyzed hydrolysis of urea. The coagulating behavior of castables and matrix-representative suspensions was investigated with the help of zeta potential analysis, pH measurements, castable free-flow evaluation, and oscillatory rheological tests. The enzyme-catalyzed hydrolysis of urea seemed to be the most appropriate mechanism to promote the coagulation of initially self-flow zero-cement refractory compositions.

    Notes: The phylogenetic relationships of the major groups of pinnipeds are of longstanding controversy. According to prevailing paleontological opinion, pinnipeds comprise two distinct lineages of independent terrestrial carnivoran origin, A logical correlate of this view is that an enormous degree of convergence accounts for the striking resemblances of these groups.It has been generally supposed that derived similarities common to pinnipeds are independently acquired adaptations to a highly constraining environment. This has not been adequately substantiated. Moreover, considerable evidence favors a contrary conclusion. Acceptance of convergence necessarily rests on demonstration that taxa possessing characters suspected to be convergent are in fact not mutal nearest allies. In the absence of such phylogenetic information, shared derived characters are indicative of common ancestry irrespective of whether they are deemed “functionally important.” Given meager support for the proposition that pinnipeds are related to different terrestrial lineages, it is currently more judicious to regard the group's origin as monophyletic. In addition to the presumed prevalence of convergence, biogeography, the high degree of morphological divergence of phocids, and the aberrant nature of phocines have improperly contributed to acceptance of independent pinniped origins.

    Notes: SUMMARY 1. In a comparative study, we examined the potential for fish to structure planktonic food webs in shallow mesotrophic to hypereutrophic Northeast Brazilian reservoirs. The food webs were dominated by three guilds of fish (facultative piscivores, generalist planktivores and omnivores), small herbivorous zooplankton and bloom-forming cyanobacteria, with few littoral macrophytes.2. A principal component's analysis on data from 13 reservoirs (27 sampling dates in 1995–99) revealed that euphotic depth, the relative density of phytoplankton (i.e. the percentage of overall phytoplankton density) represented by cyanobacteria, and the relative biomass of fish (i.e. percentage of overall biomass) represented by omnivores and facultative piscivores, explained most of the variance in the data. Physico-chemical conditions, lake morphometry and rainfall were secondary factors.3. Phytoplankton was related to fish guild structure. Chlorophyll concentration increased with total phosphorus and the relative biomass of omnivorous fish, decreased with the relative biomass of facultative piscivores, but was unrelated to the biomass and mean body size of herbivorous zooplankton. Chlorophyll concentration and the densities of filamentous and colonial cyanobacteria decreased with the ratio of the biomass of facultative piscivores to that of omnivores (FP : OM).4. We propose two complementary mechanisms for the observed relationships between fish and phytoplankton. At a low biomass of facultative piscivores, juvenile zooplanktivorous fishes may induce a trophic cascade on zooplankton in the littoral zone. Regardless of piscivore biomass, piscivores and omnivores may regulate phytoplankton via multichannel omnivory because of the predominance of omnivorous or detritivorous foraging behaviour.5. Manipulative experiments are needed to explore further whether, depending on priorities in the use of the reservoir, fisheries management could alter the FP : OM ratio either to enhance fish yields or to reduce phytoplankton densities and cyanobacterial blooms.
