    Notes: Beam position monitors (BPMs) for the SPring-8 synchrotron have already been designed and manufactured. Each BPM pickup has four button-type electrodes, and the output signals from the electrodes are switched by fast PIN-diode and are measured by signal detection systems. Eighty BPMs and four detection systems are placed around the synchrotron. Calibration of beam position of the 80 BPMs was finished successfully. In this paper, we present the structure of the BPM pickup, the electronics of the signal detection system, and the calibration system. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The construction of the SPring-8 booster synchrotron was started in 1993. The synchrotron has a two-fold symmetric lattice composed of 40 FODO cells. There are 30 normal cells and 2 straight sections, and it is composed of 64 bending magnets. The integral values of the magnetic field of the bending magnets were measured, and adequate results were obtained. The power supply of the bending magnets, which must be operated following a trapezoidal excitation-curve of the output current, is being constructed and tested now. This report presents the results of the integral values of the magnetic field of the bending magnets and the excitation-curve measurement of the power supply. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The specification and the layout of the booster synchrotron for SPring-8 were decided. The synchrotron is designed to accelerate electron or positron beams from 1 to 8 GeV with a repetition cycle of 1 Hz. The construction of the synchrotron was started in 1993. First, one bending, one quadrupole, and one sextupole magnet were made and the results of the magnetic field measurement were acquired. Two septum, one bump, and one kicker magnets for the beam extraction have been made, the field measurement and a few improvements have progressed. The high power test of the first rf cavity was finished successfully. The calibration test of the button position monitor with the signal treatment circuits is advanced now. The residual components of the synchrotron are designed and constructed, and the commissioning of the synchrotron will start in 1996. This paper presents the first measurement of each component. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

    Segregation and diffusion of phosphorus from doped Si1−xGex films into silicon (1999)

    Notes: Segregation and diffusion of P from in situ doped Si1−xGex (0.25≤x≤0.8) epitaxial films into Si at 750–850 °C were investigated using secondary ion mass spectroscopy and differential resistance measurements. It was found that the surface P concentration in the diffused layer in Si was higher than the P concentration in the Si1−xGex film, which signifies the segregation of P from the Si1−xGex film into Si. The segregation coefficient, defined as the ratio of the active P concentration in the Si to that in the Si1−xGex film, was about 2.5 at 800 °C in the case of the Si0.75Ge0.25 film as a diffusion source and increased with increasing Ge fraction. It was found that the P diffusion profiles in Si were normalized by x/t, even though the segregation of P occurred, the diffusion coefficient of P depended on the surface P concentration, and the high concentration diffusion characteristics of P in Si were similar to those reported by using a conventional diffusion source. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Dynamic compression of hydrogen for probing the molecular-atomic phase transition (1994)

    Notes: Low-entropy, cylindrical implosion of cryogenic hydrogen is simulated to explore the equation of state (EOS) close to the transition from molecular to atomic structure. The simulations are based on the Los Alamos EOS library. Concerning isentropic compression, optimum time-shaped pulses are derived analytically and are used in numerical simulations. Small cylinders of cryogenic hydrogen, suitable for laser experiments, are considered with 100 μm radius and about a millimeter long; the energy to be invested into such cylinders to reach the transition is about 1 J. Multiple-shock compression by an imploding liner is also considered; the liner velocity has to be close to 1 km/s. Liner compression produces more uniform compressed configurations with longer lifetime (about 10 ns), though at somewhat higher entropy. Rarefaction shocks occur in the expansion stage and might be useful as a diagnostic.

    Notes: This study of the relationship between nocturnal scratching and sleep is based on an analysis of 17 overnight polygraphic records of the scratch bouts and EEG of severely itchy patients. Our patients spent little time in deep orthodox sleep (stages 3 and 4), which was absent from 7 of the 17 records. Bouts of scratching were found to occur in all stages of sleep but were most numerous in stage 1 (light orthodox sleep). Sleep tended to remain stable, i.e. in a single sleep stage, for the 40 s immediately before a bout of scratching but had often changed to a more superficial stage by the time the bout had ceased, implying perhaps that scratching itself was the event linked most closely with arousal.

    Notes: A case of malignant haemangioendothelioma of the scalp in an 82-year-old female treated with intralesional, intra-arterial and intravenous recombinant interleukin-2 (rIL-2) is reported. The scalp lesions disappeared after injection of 35 350 000 Japan reference units of rIL-2 and excision of the residual tumour. Immunohistochemical characterization of the cells infiltrating the lesion after rIL-2 administration revealed 30–40% CD4+ and CD8+ T lymphocytes, 20–30% macrophages and 5–10% natural killer cells. These findings are similar to those in other human cancers. Almost all of the cells in the intersticies of the lesion after rIL-2 injection expressed leucocyte function-associated antigen-1, and some of the tumour cells and the infiltrating cells around them expressed intercellular adhesion molecule-1. HLA-DR-positive cells markedly increased in number after rIL-2 administration. This report suggests that rIL-2 administration is the most effective therapy for malignant haemangioendothelioma.

    Notes: Abstract. Sixty strains of Pasteurella piscicida were collected from cultured yellow–tail, Seriola quinqueradiata Temminck & Schlegel, in various districts of Japan. These strains were tested for their sensitivity to 14 different chemotherapeutic agents and the detected drug resistant strains were investigated to determine whether or not they possessed R plasmids. All strains were most susceptible to ampicillin of the tested drugs. All except five strains were found to be susceptible to chloramphenicol (CM) and doxycycline (DOTC). However, the strains were only moderately susceptible to cephazolin, cephalexin, nalidixic acid, trimethoprim and ormethoprim, and their MIC values were under 3–lμg/ml. Twenty–one strains showed resistance to furazolidone (NF). Five out of the 60 strains were resistant to CM, tetracycline (TC), kanamycin (KM), NF and sulphamonomethoxine (SA). Transferable R plasmids were detected in these drug–resistant strains. These R plasmids had markers for resistance to CM, TC, KM and SA.

    Notes: Abstract. During the period from 1965 to 1980, 263 Vibrio anguillarum strains from ayu, Plecoglossiis altivelis (Temminck & Schlegel), two from rainbow trout. Salmo gairdneri Richardson, and two from eel, Anguilla japonica (Temminck & Schlegel), were collected from fish suffering from vibriosis in various parts of Japan. On the basis of cross-agglutination and cross-absorption tests with thermostable (O) antigens, six distinct serotypes (A, B, C, D, E and F) were established among 12 selected strains of V. anguillarum. 241 strains isolated from ayu and two strains from rainbow trout belonged to serotype A, six strains from ayu and one strain from eel to serotype B, 12 strains from ayu to serotype C, three strains from ayu to serotype D, one strain from ayu to serotype E, and one strain from eel to serotype F. V. anguillarum strains belonging to serotypes D, E and F have not been detected from ayu, rainbow trout and eel since 1973; these serotypes appear to be minor types. V. anguillarum strain NCMB 6 and 1669 belong to our serotype A and V. anguillarum 813 to our serotype C.

    Notes: Abstract. Two haemolysin genes (AHH4 and AHH-2) of Aeromonas hydrophila ATCC7966 were cloned into a plasmid vector in Escherichia coli K-12. An open reading frame (ORF) of the AHH-1 haemolysin gene was 1734 base pairs (bp). and corresponded to a protein of 577 amino acid residues. Analysis of the deduced amino sequence indicated a highly hydrophobic N-terminal region which had the characteristics of a leader peptide. The sequence also included the -10 region and the -35 region of a promoter, and a ribosome- binding site upstream from the ORF. The termination site was located downstream from the ORF. The haemolysin was a thermolabile protein with the predicted molecular mass of 60 kDa. The AHH-1 gene is distributed in various A. hydrophila and A. salmonicida strains. The nucleotide sequence of a 981 bp ORF of the AHH-2 gene was encoded with the predicted molecular mass of 377 kDa polypeptides. The homology of the nucleotide sequence was very low between the AHH-1 and AHH-2 genes, and also with the aerolysin gene cloned by Howard & Buckley (19S6). No leader peptide was found in the N-terminal region of the ORF of the AHH2 gene. The AHH-2 gene was detected in the original strain ATCC7966, but was not detected in other tested strains of A. hydrophila and A. salmonicida.
