Notes: Low-entropy, cylindrical implosion of cryogenic hydrogen is simulated to explore the equation of state (EOS) close to the transition from molecular to atomic structure. The simulations are based on the Los Alamos EOS library. Concerning isentropic compression, optimum time-shaped pulses are derived analytically and are used in numerical simulations. Small cylinders of cryogenic hydrogen, suitable for laser experiments, are considered with 100 μm radius and about a millimeter long; the energy to be invested into such cylinders to reach the transition is about 1 J. Multiple-shock compression by an imploding liner is also considered; the liner velocity has to be close to 1 km/s. Liner compression produces more uniform compressed configurations with longer lifetime (about 10 ns), though at somewhat higher entropy. Rarefaction shocks occur in the expansion stage and might be useful as a diagnostic.

Notes: Beam position monitors (BPMs) for the SPring-8 synchrotron have already been designed and manufactured. Each BPM pickup has four button-type electrodes, and the output signals from the electrodes are switched by fast PIN-diode and are measured by signal detection systems. Eighty BPMs and four detection systems are placed around the synchrotron. Calibration of beam position of the 80 BPMs was finished successfully. In this paper, we present the structure of the BPM pickup, the electronics of the signal detection system, and the calibration system. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The specification and the layout of the booster synchrotron for SPring-8 were decided. The synchrotron is designed to accelerate electron or positron beams from 1 to 8 GeV with a repetition cycle of 1 Hz. The construction of the synchrotron was started in 1993. First, one bending, one quadrupole, and one sextupole magnet were made and the results of the magnetic field measurement were acquired. Two septum, one bump, and one kicker magnets for the beam extraction have been made, the field measurement and a few improvements have progressed. The high power test of the first rf cavity was finished successfully. The calibration test of the button position monitor with the signal treatment circuits is advanced now. The residual components of the synchrotron are designed and constructed, and the commissioning of the synchrotron will start in 1996. This paper presents the first measurement of each component. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Segregation and diffusion of P from in situ doped Si1−xGex (0.25≤x≤0.8) epitaxial films into Si at 750–850 °C were investigated using secondary ion mass spectroscopy and differential resistance measurements. It was found that the surface P concentration in the diffused layer in Si was higher than the P concentration in the Si1−xGex film, which signifies the segregation of P from the Si1−xGex film into Si. The segregation coefficient, defined as the ratio of the active P concentration in the Si to that in the Si1−xGex film, was about 2.5 at 800 °C in the case of the Si0.75Ge0.25 film as a diffusion source and increased with increasing Ge fraction. It was found that the P diffusion profiles in Si were normalized by x/t, even though the segregation of P occurred, the diffusion coefficient of P depended on the surface P concentration, and the high concentration diffusion characteristics of P in Si were similar to those reported by using a conventional diffusion source. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The construction of the SPring-8 booster synchrotron was started in 1993. The synchrotron has a two-fold symmetric lattice composed of 40 FODO cells. There are 30 normal cells and 2 straight sections, and it is composed of 64 bending magnets. The integral values of the magnetic field of the bending magnets were measured, and adequate results were obtained. The power supply of the bending magnets, which must be operated following a trapezoidal excitation-curve of the output current, is being constructed and tested now. This report presents the results of the integral values of the magnetic field of the bending magnets and the excitation-curve measurement of the power supply. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Two siblings with yellow nail syndrome and mental retardation are described. In addition to nail changes, the younger brother was found to have congenital lymphoedema and idiopathic pleural effusion, and the elder brother, lymphoedema praecox. They had in common a history of respiratory tract infections. Their intelligence quotient as measured by the Suzuki-Binet tests was 30% and 70%, respectively.

Notes: We describe a 15-month-old girl with Michelin tyre syndrome. She had hirsuties and marked skin folds. Histological examination showed fragmented elastic fibres in addition to smooth muscle hamartoma. On electron microscopy, decreased deposition of elastin was observed. We speculate that elastic fibre abnormafities may account for the characteristic skin changes in the Michelin tyre syndrome.

Notes: The genome of the cichlid (teleost) fish Oreochromis niloticus contains a set of genes which encode group V C-type lectin proteins homologous to the mammalian NKG2/CD94 family of natural killer (NK) cell receptors. To determine the genomic organization of these killer cell-like receptor (KLR) genes, an O. niloticus BAC library was screened with a cDNA probe derived previously from an expressed sequence tag of the related cichlid species Paralabidochromis chilotes. Four distinct KLR-bearing BAC clones were analysed, three of which could be assembled into a contig. One of the clones was sequenced in its entirety, whereas the others were partially sequenced to identify the KLR loci borne by them. Altogether, 28 distinct KLR loci were identified, of which at least 26 occupy a single chromosomal region, the KLR complex. One half of the loci appear to be occupied by pseudogenes. Compared to the human NK cell receptor complex, the Oreochromis KLR complex is more compact and, apart from transposons, appears to contain only KLR loci. The gene density of the complex is one KLR locus per 18 kb of sequence. All the KLR loci constituting the complex are derived from a single most recent common ancestor, which is estimated to have existed 7.7 million years ago. The 180 kb of the determined sequence is a mosaic of blocks of similar segments reflecting a complex history of duplications, deletions and rearrangements. The transposons found in the sequenced part belong to the TC1, Xena, CR1 and TX1 families.

Notes: Although spindle cell haemangioendothelioma was initially described as a low-grade angiosarcoma, recent reports have suggested that it is a reactive or benign vascular proliferation. In order to assess the proliferative activity in spindle cell haemangioendothelioma, 12 cases, one of which was associated with Maffucci's syndrome, were immunohistochemically analysed with antibodies against proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA), Ki-67 and p53. DNA flow cytometry was performed on six of the 12 cases. Seven of the 12 patients had multiple nodules or papules. Although two cases recurred once and twice, respectively, after surgery, there was no evidence of metastasis. Immunohistochemically, the percentages of PCNA, Ki-67 and p53 positive tumour cells ranged from 0.1% to 6.4% (mean 3.3%), 0.1% to 14.9% (3.5%) and 0.1% to 2.8% (1.1%), respectively, indicating a low proliferative activity and a low p53 expression in this tumour. All seven lesions from the six cases examined flow cytometrically were DNA diploid with proliferative indices (S + G2/M-phase fractions) ranging from 4.9% to 19.5% (mean, 10.9%). These findings are compatible with a bland-looking histological picture and an indolent clinical course of spindle cell haemangioendothelioma.

Notes: A total blood cell cDNA library was constructed using a 3-year-old carp Cyprinus carpio. A β-globin cDNA (CβG1) was identified from the library by the polymerase chain reaction using a β-globin-specific primer deduced from the carp β-globin-A amino acid sequence. Also, five additional types of β-globin cDNAs (CβG2∼6) were isolated by colony hybridization using CβG1 as a probe. Sequence analysis revealed that these CβGs encoded 147 amino acids, and the deduced amino acid sequences showed high identity (89·1–95·2%) to previously reported carp β-globin amino acid sequences. The nucleotide sequences of the CβGs were very similar (identity 96·0–99·6%) and the expression levels of CβG1∼6 were 28·6, 28·6, 21·4, 14·3, 3·6 and 3·6% of the total number of cloned CβGs, respectively. Although the complete amino acid sequence identities between the CβGs and the β-globin of higher vertebrates were low, functionally important regions such as the α-βcontact region and haem contact region were well conserved. These data showed that, as in higher vertebrates, the adult carp has a multiple β-globin gene family (at least six members). However, transcripts encoding four types of peptides (CβG1 type, CβG2 and 3 type, CβG5 type, and CβG4 and 6 type) were expressed at relatively high levels, this being a unique character of the carp haemoglobin system.
