    Notes: It is known experimentally that stable few-body clusters containing negatively-charged electrons (e) and positively-charged holes (h) can exist in low-dimensional semiconductor nanostructures. In addition to the familiar exciton (e+h), three-body "charged excitons" (2e+h and 2h+e) have also been observed. Much less is known about the properties of such charged excitons since three-body problems are generally very difficult to solve, even numerically. Here we introduce a simple model, which can be considered as an extended Calogero model, to calculate analytically the energy spectra for both a charged exciton and a neutral exciton in a one-dimensional nanostructure, such as a finite-length quantum wire. Apart from its physical motivation, the model is of mathematical interest in that it can be related to the Heun (or Heine) equation and, as shown explicitly, highly accurate, closed form solutions can be obtained. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Raw and cooked bind properties, cooking loss and pH were evaluated when adding three levels (0%, 0.25%, 0.50%) of a kappa carrageenan and locust bean gum mixture (C/LBG) to finely and coarsely ground high mannuronate alginate restructured beef. Treatments included variable levels of the following dry additives: Alginate (0.50%-1.00%), calcium carbonate (0.10%-0.20%) and glucono-delta-lactone (GDL, 0%-0.80%). Raw breaking strength of finely ground formulations was increased by elevated alginate levels (P〈0.05), but was not affected by C/LBG addition (P〉0.05). The effect of alginate and C/LBG on cooked bind properties depended on whether finely or coarsely ground meat was used. Sensory evaluations of coarsely ground treatments suggest that sufficient raw and cooked bind was achieved using 0.50% alginate, 0.10% calcium carbonate and 0.60% GDL. Addition of 0.50% C/LBG and/or 0.75% alginate to coarsely ground formulations further reduced cooking loss (P〈0.05) by relatively 13% and 17%, respectively. No interaction between C/LBG and alginate was found (P〉0.05).

    Notes: Abstract The observation of electroluminescence from crystalline fullerenes is described and discussed for the first time. Using gold and aluminium electrodes as contacts, a broad band emission spectrum, extending from 400 nm to 1100 nm is observed. The spectrum has a primary maximum at 920 nm and a weaker feature centered on 420 nm. The spectral characteristics are independent of the applied field and the longer wavelength region is identical to that measured in the high excitation density photoluminescence spectrum. In addition, the electroluminescent output intensity increases with the cube of the injection current, strengthening the association to the nonlinear phenomena observed in the highly excited state of fullerenes.

    Notes: Abstract The highly excited state of fullerenes is characterised by a luminescence output which is dependent on the cube of the input intensity. This nonlinear emission is red shifted from the low-level emission and has a long, intensity dependent lifetime. Under similar irradiation conditions, the photoconductive response is seen to increase with the cube of the input intensity and the photocurrent in the highly excited state is observed to be largely independent of temperature, contrasting sharply with the thermally activated behaviour at low excitation densities. The degree of nonlinearity of the observed phenomena exclude an interpretation in terms of intra-molecular processes and the temperature dependence of the photoconductive response is suggestive of a Mott-like transition. The nonlinear behaviour is compared to that of indirect band-gap semiconductors in which the origin of similar nonlinear phenomena in the highly excited state luminescence and photoconductivity are explained in terms of electron-hole droplet formation. The similarities of the behaviours leads to a consideration of exchange and correlation energies in fullerenes, which are calculated according to a phenomenological model. Estimates of the contributions are consistent with a Mott-like transition at high excitation densities and an excess exchange/correlation energy in the highly excited state of ∼150 meV.

    Notes: Abstract Under high intensity illumination, the optical and electronic properties of fullerenes are seen to undergo dramatic, nonlinear changes. The photoluminescence emission is seen to increase with approximately the third power of the input intensity above an apparent threshold intensity. Associated with this nonlinear increase is the emergence of a long lifetime emission component and a redshifting of the emission spectrum. Investigations of the photo-transport properties associate the observed behaviour with a phase transition in the highly excited state. Above an intensity which coincides with the onset of the nonlinear emission, the photoconductive response increases with approximately the cube of the input power. In the highly excited state, the photoconductive response becomes relatively temperature independent compared to the thermally activated behaviour observed at low intensities. The characteristics of the temperature dependence are associated with a high electron mobility phase in the highly excited state and therefore an optically driven insulator to metal transition is proposed as a description of the observed phenomena.

    Notes: Abstract  The effect of annexins II, III and V, purified from different species, on the calcium-activated chloride current across the stage-V to stage-VI Xenopus laevis oocyte membrane was tested either directly, using calcium entry mediated by depolarization, by A23187 permeabilization of oocytes or indirectly by quisqualate stimulation of a metabotropic glutamate receptor in the membrane expressed by the oocyte after injection of mRNA. The annexins isolated from the Ehrlich ascites cell, which is a mouse tumor cell, were found to be potent inhibitors of the chloride current, showing half-maximal inhibition at 50 nM, whereas no block was found using bovine or porcine annexins isolated from lung tissue. Of the annexins tested, we found annexin III to be naturally occurring in the oocyte, while only trace amounts of annexins II and V could be demonstrated. The inhibition pattern varied somewhat according to the stimulus method, the inhibition being more complete when an indirect stimulus via the metabotropic receptor was applied compared to a direct calcium stimulus.

    Notes: Abstract In this paper we examine the possibility of adopting standards within the context of radio astronomy and the benefits to be derived thereby. In particular we consider the application of standards within the three areas of the receiver hardware, the control and communication between different parts of the observing system, and the interface with the astronomer. The adoption of such standards will increase flexibility of observing systems, allow the easy interchange of equipment between observatories and greatly simplify guest observing. In this paper we will only consider the application of standards within the field of millimetre-wave and sub-millimetre-wave single dish astronomy. However, the principle can be easily extended to other astronomical wavebands. We describe some current developments at the Onsala Space Observatory which illustrate the proposed philosophy and show how such standards may be implemented. Naturally, the detailed definition of such standards would have to be agreed in conjunction with other interested astronomical institutions.
