    Notes: A pilot consumer survey showed apple rings prepared from Suntan apples to be liked, particularly with respect to appearance and taste. People, on the whole, preferred a whiter product; texture was acceptable, although respondents would have preferred it to be firmer. Age appeared to be the major demographic factor influencing response, the colour of the product being more favourable to the 45 and over age group, with the 16–24 age group preferring a less sweet product.

    Notes: Summary Diversity studies of Echinochloa spp. are complicated by problems in taxonomy and species identification, caused by the existence of morphologically intergrading types. Six amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) primer combinations and five microsatellites were used to assess variation in 24 samples morphologically identified as E. crus-galli, E. colona and E. crus-pavonis, from Bangladesh, India, Colombia, Costa Rica, Côte d'Ivoire and Philippines. Out of 909 AFLP bands generated, 775 were polymorphic. Genotype diversity for the microsatellites ranged from 0.28 to 0.72. Similarity matrices were calculated using Jaccard coefficient, and input into cluster and principal coordinates analyses. AFLP and microsatellite results were highly correlated. Echinochloa crus-pavonis and E. crus-galli were intermixed, consistent with the view that E. crus-galli occurs as numerous intergrading races in the four countries (Bangladesh, India, Côte d'Ivoire and Philippines). The E. colona samples clustered as a distinct group. In 15 samples of E. crus-pavonis collected from rice fields in a valley in Côte d'Ivoire (over a 2-km distance), four different genotypes were found in a 4 m × 4 m area. These results suggest that AFLPs and SSRs may be useful not only for discriminating genotypes and studying population structure but also for helping to resolve taxonomic relationships in Echinochloa spp.

    Notes: Six Salix clones were inoculated with urediniospores of four isolates of Melampsora larici-epitea at five inoculum levels using a leaf-disc method. Disease reactions were recorded using a digital camera; the number and size of uredinia were examined using image analysis software; and spore yield per leaf disc was measured. In three Salix/Melampsora combinations, S. × mollissima‘Q83’/Q1 (LET4); S. viminalis‘78183’/V1 (LET1); and S. × stipularis/V1, pustule numbers increased as inoculum density became higher. In the remainder, S. viminalis‘Mullatin’/V1; S. × calodendron/DB (LET3); and S. burjatica‘Korso’/K (LR1), pustule numbers initially increased, then decreased as inoculum densities exceeded 140–360 spores per disc. Calculated infection efficiency ranged from 0·11 to 0·20 on the three willows inoculated with V1: 0·16–0·68 for S. × calodendron/DB; 0·20–0·55 for ‘Q83’/Q1; and 0·07–0·48 for Korso/K. In single-spore inoculations, up to 10% of spores produced single uredinia. Infection efficiency increased sharply between inoculum densities of 1–40 spores per leaf disc. Spore yield was more closely correlated to pustule area (accounting for 61·2% variance for the combined data) than to the number of pustules (42·7% variance). For spore yields in relation to pustule numbers, clone-specific individual lines having different intercepts and slopes fitted significantly better than either a single line for all the tested willows, or parallel lines fitted to each clone (P 〈 0·001). For spore yields in relation to pustule area, clone-specific individual parallel lines were significantly better than a single line (P 〈 0·001).

    Notes: Abstract  Genetic diversity in 31 individuals from 14 coconut populations across the entire geographic range (2–3 individuals per population) was assessed using sequence-tagged microsatellites (or simple sequence repeats, SSRs) and amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP). From the 39 SSR primer sets tested, only two gave patterns that could not be scored and used in the data analysis. The remainder included five SSRs that gave double-locus profiles in which one locus could still be scored separately. The 37 SSRs revealed between 2 and 16 alleles per locus and a total of 339 alleles in the 14 populations. Gene diversity (D = 1-Σpi 2) ranged from 0.47 to 0.90. Two of the four Dwarf populations were homozygous at all 37 loci, which is consistent with their autogamous (self-fertilising) reproduction. One Dwarf population was heterozygous at one locus but the other (Niu Leka Dwarf), which is known to be cross-pollinating, showed high levels of heterozygosity. Generally, diversity was higher in populations from the South Pacific and South East Asia. Three SSR loci (CNZ46, CN2A5, CN11E6) gave distinct genotypes for all but two populations. The East African populations had higher heterozygosities than those from West Africa, and the populations from Tonga and Fiji generally had distinct alleles from those of the South Pacific. AFLP analysis with 12 primer combinations gave a total of 1106 bands, of which 303 were polymorphic (27%). Similarity matrices were constructed from the two data sets using the proportion of shared alleles for SSRs and a Jaccard coefficient for AFLPs. In each case cluster and principal co-ordinates analyses were performed, with the resultant dendrograms and plots revealing similar relationships among the populations for both approaches. There was generally a good separation of populations, and phenetic relationships were in agreement with those previously shown by RFLPs. The use of SSRs and AFLPs in genetic-diversity analysis for the establishment of germplasm collections is discussed.

    Notes: Abstract Crop height in the oilseed rape cv. Ariana was reduced more by the triazole retardant triapenthenol at 490 g ai ha−1, applied as a combined spray with the triazole fungicide tebuconazole at 250 g ai ha−1, than when triapenthenol was applied alone. The growth responses following combined treatment appeared to be additive of the component effects. Initial inhibition of stem extension and leaf expansion by tebuconazole was followed by compensatory growth; the pattern of responses was similar to that with triapenthenol applied at approximately one tenth of the rate. However, different mechanisms of effects on growth were indicated by competitive interaction with gibberellic acid.

    Notes: Summary Thirty-seven accessions of cowpea and yard-long bean were assessed for resistance toStriga gesnerioides. Cowpea plants were grown using anin vitro method, then inoculated with young seedlings ofS. gesnerioides produced from seed from three West African countries. Resistance was assessed by comparing the number and size ofS. gesnerioides tubercles on these accessions with those on a known susceptible cowpea, cv. Blackeye. Two cowpea landraces, APL-1 and 87-2, were completely resistant toS. gesnerioides from Burkina Faso, Mali and Cameroon and partially resistant toS. gesnerioides from Niger. Complete resistance was expressed either as a hypersensitive response of infected root tissues or as a severely retarded development of successful infections. All other accessions, including three samples of yard-long bean were susceptible toS. gesnerioides. The original 87-2 plants segregated for resistance and susceptibility. However, uniformly resistant progeny were obtained by producing seed from vegetatively propagated clones of single resistant 87-2 plants. Resistance of APL-1 and 87-2 toS. gesnerioides was confirmed in pot and field trials. Neither of these cowpeas were resistant toAlectra vogelii. Varieties APL-1 and 87-2 provide additional sources of resistance to most races ofS. gesnerioides, including a newly discovered virulent race from Benin.
