Notes: Abstract The present paper examines the problem of the axial loading of a rigid circular punch which is located at the debonded boundary of an elastic medium-rigid boundary interface. The mathematical analysis of the problem focusses primarily on the evaluation of the load-displacement response for the punch boundary of the debonded region. The numerical results presented in the paper illustrate the manner in which the axial stiffness of the punch is influenced by the Poisson's ratio of the elastic medium and the relative dimensions of the debonded region.

Notes: Summary An integral transform method is used to obtain stress-distributions in cracked symmetric two-dimensional projections extending out of the half-plane. These projections are similar to such concrete cases as gear teeth. In this study, the case of a crack normal to the boundary has been considered. Integral equations methods have been used to calculate mode I and II stress intensity factors. Results have been obtained through numerical integration for a given boundary equation. They are shown graphically for typical values of shape parameters. Although a particular shape has been assumed, equations and numerical results may be useful in evaluating fatigue and fracture strength of mechanical elements such as gears.

Notes: The present paper examines the class of problems related to a flat rigid anchoring region which is embedded at a geological interface. The analysis focuses on the evaluation of the elastic stiffness of the embedded anchor. A boundary element technique is used estimate the axial, rotational and translational stiffnesses of the anchor. These estimates are compared with a set of bounds which are evaluated in exact closed form. These bounds are obtained by invoking kinematic and/or traction constraintsat the geological interface. The numerical results presented in the paper illstrate the manner in which the various stiffnesses of the anchoring region are influenced by the elastic properties of the surrounding geological media.
