Notes: Abstract— Cyclic bending fatigue tests have been performed on a typical electrical conductor held by a suspension clamp. Surface damage of the aluminium wire has been induced during short duration tests. Various degradation zones have been characterized between wire layers and the clamp. Metallographic examination has shown that two process zones are critical with respect to fretting crack nucleation. Fatigue tests at different bending amplitudes have shown that the wire breaks in these critical zones.

Notes: Abstract An optimal design procedure for sandwich structures subject to frequency and section constraints is developed from direct comparison theorems for different designs. These theorems are derived from the Rayleigh quotient for the structure. Applications to the axial motion of a bar and to the vibration of a portal frame are given.

Notes: Summary An integral transform method is used to obtain stress-distributions in cracked symmetric two-dimensional projections extending out of the half-plane. These projections are similar to such concrete cases as gear teeth. In this study, the case of a crack normal to the boundary has been considered. Integral equations methods have been used to calculate mode I and II stress intensity factors. Results have been obtained through numerical integration for a given boundary equation. They are shown graphically for typical values of shape parameters. Although a particular shape has been assumed, equations and numerical results may be useful in evaluating fatigue and fracture strength of mechanical elements such as gears.

Notes: Abstract Experimental flexural tests are conducted on an epoxy oversized 1×6 strand; the objectives of these tests are to measure the bending stiffness and the associated strains. Three sets of boundary conditions are applied. The bending stiffness is deduced from the transverse midspan deflection and is found to be dependent on the axial force and the moment distribution. The deduced bending stiffness is compared to values computed from the theoretical bending stiffnesses.
