Notes: Summary The present work is concerned with the microrheology of a 2-dimensional fibrous system. A mathematical model is proposed that contains the aspects of bonding between fibres. The notion of three measuring scales, as well as the concept of a “Material Functional” that reflects the geometrical and rheological properties of the network is introduced in the analysis. The deformation kinematics is treated first for single fibres and then the fibre-fibre interaction by using a generalised force concept is considered. A formal presentation of the material functional required for the characterization of the fibrous network response is given.

Notes: Abstract The type of porous media considered in the present study consists of a randomly structured solid or α-phase in which the existing voids permit the transport of fluid orβ-phase, when a material sample is subjected to an external load. By introducing a system functional characterizing the constraint flow of theβ-phase and a set of control parameters, the solution of the random flow process is shown to be a strong Markov or diffusion process in the velocity space or subspace of the more general probabilistic function space. The analysis is illustrated by experimental observations on a particular porous medium, i.e. Al-Glycol-Resin composite and the obtained results by the use of scanning-electron microscopy and quantitative stereology.

Notes: Abstract The present study is concerned with the stochastic dynamics of two immiscible polymer melts. The binary structure of the overall melt consists of chain-molecules of both theα- andβ-phase in form of random coils. The stochastic dynamics is based on the motion of individual monomeric units forming a macro molecule. The weak interactions between theα,β molecules are seen as “temporary junctions” in the microstructure obeying a van der Waals type bonding. These junctions can be characterized by a BD-Poisson process and the motion of “unit cells” can be used to formulate the evolution of the configurational distribution functions for these cells in form of the Fokker-Planck type differential equation.

Notes: Abstract In this paper the response behaviour of fibrous structures to a given uniaxial load is treated on the basis of probabilistic mechanics. For the illustration of the theoretical analysis, a cellulose network with specified properties is employed. The significant relations, which link the microscopic variables to the intermediate ones (mesoscopic) and thus to the macroscopic quantities are material functionals or operators. An operator for the given cellulose structure is derived in an explicit form. As a result of the analysis the internal stresses due to the given load are numerically evaluated.

Notes: Abstract The present study is concerned with the stochastic formulation of the failure of solids with microcracks. The analysis is directed towards the development of microcracks in a given material structure due to the application of an external constant load. The formulation is based on the theory of stochastic population processes and that of point processes. The consideration of certain aspects of the “extreme value” theory is however necessary in characterizing the evolution of the microcrack population. It is shown to be convenient to first consider a collection of microcracks in a specific material domain (microdomain) which is regarded as a “family of objects” and represented by its state so that: {z1, z2 ..., z n }=z ⊂ Z ⊂ $$\mathfrak{X}$$ , where Z is the state space and $$\mathfrak{X}$$ a general probabilistic function space. Governing equations for the development of microcracks are derived and the results of the analysis are then compared with experimental observations obtained from short-time creep tests on a class of high temperature materials.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung In der vorliegenden Arbeit werden einfache stochastische Modelle beschrieben.
Notes: Summary The present work is concerned with simple stochastic models for the representation of the linear viscoelastic material behaviour. It is shown that such models can be employed in the same manner as the usual mechanical models. However in contrast to the mechanical models, the stochastic models are related to the microstructure of the medium by means of a material functional. In the present work the latter is shown only in a very reduced form. Creep and relaxation functions of such materials are considered first in terms of microscopic quantities, which are random variables. By introducing the concept of a mesoscopic domain within the material sample the transition from the microscopic to the macroscopic or phenomenological representation can be achieved.

Notes: Abstract The present work is concerned with the application of the laser-beam technique for the thermal-shock testing of metal disks. For the generation of an instantaneous heat source, a solid-state laser is employed. The theoretical analysis of the thermal-shock problem is presented elsewhere. The present work deals with the results obtained from experimental observations and a comparison with the theoretically predicted results is made.
