Notes: Experiments are reported which explore the possibility of using low-temperature, multiple-energy Si+ ion implantation into thin SiO2 films on Si and subsequent short-time thermal processing to form silicon nanostructures capable of yielding a high-intensity emission in the short-wavelength part of the visible spectrum. A room-temperature short-wavelength PL band of high intensity was found after double implantation with energies of 200 and 100 keV at a temperature of −20 °C to a total dose of 4.8×10 16 cm−2 (atomic concentration about 2×1021 cm−3) and subsequent furnace annealing at 400 °C for 0.5 h in forming gas or by flash lamp annealing at 1050 °C for 20 ms. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Anther culture in the breeding process of winter wheat. III. Ability of winter wheat F1 populations with the two heterozygous 1AL–IAS/1AL–IRS and 1BL–1BS/1BL–IRS chromosome pairsApplication of anther culture to four F1 hybrids between the IBL–IRS (‘Amigo’) and several 1BL–IRS wheat-rye translocation forms yielded 129 green pollen plants in an average embryo induction frequency of 17.6 %. A total of 2632 anthers was inoculated. 25 % and 42 % of the regenerated plants were haploid and spontaneously doubled haploid, and 33 % had abnormal chromosomal structure. After chromosome doubling treatment 87% of all pollen plants set seeds. By means of multiple peroxidases and Giemsa C-banding patterns, the anther culture progeny could be further classified into 16 plants without the short arm of IR-chromosome of rye, 21 IAL–IRS and 50 1BL–IRS translocation lines and into 16 IAL–IRS, IBL–IRS double translocation lines according to the four possible characteristic types of F2 gametes of the tested F1 hybrids. Advantages of the haploid technique for the selection of desirable traits and the meaning of the IRS genes in wheat are discussed.

Notes: Fraunhofer Institute for Factory Operation and Automation (IFF). SIRIUS is a climbing robot meant for any vertical surface, regardless of the angle. The robot can be outfitted with tools to perform a variety of service-sector tasks such as façade cleaning, building and ship coating, ship welding, inspection work on tanks, and so on. It is a modular system, and the robot can be adapted to almost any surface, independent of the surface material or obstacles. The robot stays attached to the surface via suction cup feet or magnetic grippers, and moves vertically on four linear guides that are coupled in two pairs. The new kinematics of the robot allow it to walk continuously in all directions. The robot overcomes obstacles by sensing their position and generating the necessary step length in order to maximize the number of suction cups attached to the surface while walking over the obstacle.

Notes: Summary Results of surgical synovectomy and radiation synovectomy (radiosynoviorthesis) of the tibiotalar joint in rheumatoid patients are reported. The staged concept for management of the rheumatoid ankle joint is presented which is based on the radiographic appearance of disease progression. Results of 16 rheumatoid patients with disease to the ankle joint suggest that pain and walking capability is positively influenced by synovectomy and radiosynoviorthesis. Follow-up of 30 months revealed no deterioration of postoperative clinical improvement. In the absence of contraindications to radiosynoviorthesis it is suggested to combine arthroscopic synovectomy with radiosynoviorthesis for the treatment of early stages of rheumatoid disease of the ankle joint. Open synovectomy is prefered to arthroscopic synovectomy, if tenosynovectomy is simultaneously required.

Notes: Summary Spondylolysis and spondylolisthesis occur predominantly in the lower lumbar spine. Besides congenital defects such as predisposition of spondylolysis the correlation between competitive sports activities and an increased incidence of spondylolysis is proved. In early stages, complete healing can be achieved by conservative treatment (abstinence from sports activities for 3 months, orthesis). Persistence of pain, neurologic symptoms and progression of vertebral slipping are indications for operative treatment (reconstruction of the isthmus, dorso-ventral spondylodesis). The exercise tolerance depends on the extent of instability, progression of vertebral slipping and clinical symptoms. The limits of exercise tolerance vary among the individual athletes and require the decision of the physician. Backstroke swimming, abdominal and back muscle strengthening exercises, and types of sport involving smooth movements are advisable. Sports education in school is possible without restriction in patients with stable spondylolysis and in those with spondylolisthesis without unfavourable concomitant factors.

Notes: Abstract The short-wavelength (400–700 nm) photoluminescence (PL) spectra of SiO2 layers implanted with Si+, Ge+, and Ar+ ions in the dose range 3.2×1016–1.2×1017 cm−2 are compared. After Ar+ implantation an extremely weak luminescence, which vanishes completely after annealing for 30 min at 400 °C or 20 ms at 1050 °C, was observed. After implantation of group-IV elements the luminescence intensities were 1 to 2 orders of magnitude higher, and the luminescence remained not only with annealings but it could also increase. The dose and heating dependences of the luminescence show that it is due to the formation of impurity clusters and this process is more likely to be of a percolation than a diffusion character. For both group-IV impurities an intense blue band and a weaker band in the orange part of the spectrum were observed immediately after implantation. The ratio of the excitation and emission energies of the blue luminescence is characteristic of oxygen vacancies in SiO2; its properties are determined by the direct interaction of group-IV atoms. On this basis it is believed that the centers of blue PL are chains of Si (or Ge) atoms embedded in SiO2. The orange luminescence remained after annealings only in the case of Si+ implantation. This is attributed directly to the nonphase precipitates of Si in the form of strongly developed nanometer-size clusters.

Notes: Abstract Eighteen available doubled haploid wheat lines with a cytologically proven 1A–1R, 1B–1R double translocation, which where derived via anther culture from four crosses of the 1A–1R wheat-rye translocation cv “Amigo” with several 1B–1R wheat-rye translocation forms, were subjected to electrophoretic seed protein analysis. Besides, the five parents used in the crosses and some other wheat cultivars and doubled haploid lines (19 with a 1B–1R single translocation, 10 with a 1A–1R translocation and 7 without any 1R translocation) were also included in the investigation. It was found that the gliadin patterns visualized after SDS polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis of alcohol-soluble seed protein extracts can differentiate not only 1B–1R and 1A–1R translocation forms from wheats without any 1R-translocation chromosome, but also 1B–1R and 1A–1R wheats from each other. Moreover, 1A–1R, 1B–1R double translocation lines can be distinguished as well due to characteristic differences revealed between 1A–1R and 1B–1R translocation forms. Thus, all of tested dh1- and dh2-grains of the double translocation lines showed the expected doublet: the 1A–1R translocation (“Amigo”)-typical rye band and the 1B–1R translocation (“Kawkas”)-typical rye band. Consequently, gliadin patterns estimated after SDS electrophoresis may be used as markers for the fast detection of the desired 1A–1R, 1B–1R double translocation forms among 1A–1R single translocation lines, 1B–1R single translocation lines and lines without any 1R-translocation in the progenies of appropriate crosses. Furthermore, by means of gliadin tests on the dh2-generation the excellent stability of the double translocation 1A–1R, 1B–1R during more than one propagation phase has been proven. Estimations of high-molecular weight (HMW) glutenin subunits coded by 1A and 1B chromosomes are compatible with the double translocation constitution. A few deviating results can be explained by crossing-over events. Seed protein analysis revealed that it is possible to produce 1A–1R, 1B–1R double translocation lines with good glutenin compositions provided that adequate favourable parents are used.
