Notes: A general equation for the susceptibility of disordered systems is proposed. It is based on the experimental observation of power laws at frequencies far from the peak frequency of the imaginary part of the frequency dependent relaxation function, the susceptibility. The obtained general expression contains the equations of other proposed relaxation functions as special cases and, thus, it might be considered as a generalization of these. From this general equation we derive an equation specially adapted for the α relaxation in glass-forming materials. This equation contains only three fit parameters and it is thus very suitable for fitting real experimental data. It is shown that this equation is a good frequency domain representation of the time domain Kohlrausch–Williams–Watts stretched exponential. From the general equation we also derive a four-parameter "universal" equation that describes most types of responses and even inverted response data, i.e., response peaks more stretched on the low frequency side than on the (as is normal) high frequency side. The physical significance of the different parameters is qualitatively discussed and the proposed functions are shown to satisfactorily describe typical experimental data. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The congenital erythrodermas represent a heterogeneous group of inherited and acquired disorders often accompanied by systemic infections, impaired epidermal barrier function and concomitant life-threatening fluid and electrolyte imbalance. In the present report, we describe a patient who was considered to have congenital ichthyosiform erythroderma for 26 years until molecular testing led to the correct diagnosis of Netherton syndrome.

Notes: Davis and Ollendick (this issue) provide an insightful review and critique of the current state of treatment for childhood specific phobias. Their review is guided by bio informational theory (Lang, 1979) and the degree to which empirically supported treatments for childhood specific phobia use the main tenets of the theory in assessing their outcomes. We agree that failure to assess outcomes related to multiple fear components is a weakness of extant treatments. We also agree that assessment of all components of the fear response is important for the determination of treatment efficacy and mechanisms of change. However, given the current state of anxiety assessment, we suggest that it may be premature to require treatments to demonstrate alteration in all of the tripartite fear components and subjective fear before assigning efficacy status. This commentary discusses the practical and methodological difficulties in the assessment of multiple fear response components in children and argues the need for improved assessment technology. The necessity to specifically target each fear response system in treatment is also addressed.

Notes: A 61-year-old woman presented with a 2-year history of an abnormal erythematous swelling on the upper lip and cheek. Upon examination there were no other physical findings. Histological examination found discreet sarcoidal granulomas in the lower dermis. Routine laboratory studies, chest radiographs and pulmonary functions were all normal. Clinical presentation and histological findings were, therefore, compatible with the diagnosis of orofacial granulomatosis (OFG). The patient was patch tested with an extended standard series that included metal–salt, dental prosthesis, bakery and corticosteroids series. The patch test was positive (score ++) after 48 and 72 h for mercury in the metal–salt and dental prosthesis series. During the past decade the patient had received amalgam fillings of several dental cavities, including one adjacent to the swollen cheek. The unilateral localization of the soft tissue swelling adjacent to the amalgam tooth fillings, along with the positive patch test for mercury, raised the possibility that the OFG was part of a delayed hypersensitive reaction to the fillings. The patient therefore underwent a total amalgam replacement procedure; complete disappearance of the swelling overlying the right cheek was observed within 7 weeks and the swelling of the upper lip subsided completely within 6 months. We propose that mercury in amalgam tooth fillings is another cause of OFG and suggest appropriate patch testing in patients who do not have an apparent cause of OFG.

Notes: Both researchers and therapists who study schizophrenia make inferences about enduring family roles from observed patterns of interactional talking behavior within families. Evidence regarding the stability of these patterns is rarely investigated. The present study examined the short-term stability of intrafamilial speech patterns (who talks to whom) across two consecutive discussions. The sample was composed of families containing a recent-onset, adult schizophrenic patient. All discussions involved two biological parents and a young adult patient (N = 28). Families were classified into one of three interactional role-structure categories based on the intrafamilial speech patterns in two 10-minute discussions obtained in the same session. In addition, the affective style (Doane, West, Goldstein, et al., 1981) of the content of the discussions was coded. The results indicated that intrafamilial speech patterns were relatively stable across two discussions despite variations in the focus of the problem discussed. Further, when one parent was predominant in the discussion, a higher rate of negative affective statements was observed than when both parents were equal participants. The results provide further support for the use of discussion tasks in generating meaningful family interaction data.

Notes: We report results of dielectric spectroscopy on water confined in a two-dimensional layer-structured Na-vermiculite clay. Several relaxation processes of different origin can be discerned in the spectra. A strong dielectric loss peak is observed in the clay with two layers of water molecules between the rigid clay platelets at temperatures between 125 and 215 K. This loss peak is neither observed in bulk ice, nor in the dry clay or clay with only one water layer between platelets. The relaxation time is shown to have an Arrhenius temperature dependence which does not extrapolate to the high-temperature behavior. This behavior is in accordance with the proposed so-called "fragile-strong" transition of supercooled bulk water, which implies a change in the temperature dependence of the relaxation time from a high-temperature non-Arrhenius to low-temperature Arrhenius behavior. However, this transition is experimentally elusive as it would occur in an inaccessible (due to the ease of crystallization) temperature range of the supercooled bulk water. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.
