    The effect of thermal expansion on nonlinear first and second sound in the whole temperature region of He II (1996)

    Notes: We consider one-dimensional, weakly nonlinear first and second sound waves in He II. The first correction to the shock speed is computed for each sound mode. The expressions obtained are exact with respect to the coefficient of thermal expansion β. It is shown that the commonly made assumption of negligible β can lead to significant error in the shock speeds for first sound away from the lambda-line. This contrasts with the calculation of the linear sound speeds and the shock speed for second sound where the β=0 approximation yields accurate results. Near the lambda-line, the exact expressions for both modes are seen to contain fundamentally different singularities than those found in the commonly employed β=0 theory. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Several studies have shown linkage of bronchial asthma, allergic rhinitis and total serum IgE concentration to the chromosomal region 12q13–24 in ethnical diverse populations. This region harbours a number of candidate genes for asthma and atopy, including stem cell factor (SCF), leukotriene A4 hydrolase (LTA4H), thyroid receptor 2 (TR2), and signal transducer and activator of transcription 6 (STAT6). However, the same region was shown as well to be linked to other diseases with inflammatory character. So far no variants in any of these genes have been published which would allow association studies and confirm the pathogenicity of any of these genes.〈section xml:id="abs1-2"〉〈title type="main"〉ObjectiveWe wanted to test for linkage of the chromosomal region 12q13–24 with the atopic phenotype without regard to clinical manifestations. Furthermore we screened for common nucleotide polymorphisms in candidate genes to enable association studies.〈section xml:id="abs1-3"〉〈title type="main"〉MethodsWe employed sib-pair linkage analysis and transmission disequilibrium testing with regard to four highly polymorphic microsatellite markers in 12q13–24 in atopic nuclear families. In addition, we looked for polymorphisms in the genes coding for SCF, LTA4H, TR2 and STAT6 performing SSCP-analysis and direct genomic sequencing.〈section xml:id="abs1-4"〉〈title type="main"〉ResultsWe found no evidence for linkage of the genomic region 12q13–24 to elevated total serum IgE levels, specific sensitization to common inhalant allergens or atopy. Furthermore we identified three nucleotide polymorphisms including one common variant in the gene coding for SCF. No association of this polymorphism and any of the atopic phenotypes was seen.〈section xml:id="abs1-5"〉〈title type="main"〉ConclusionWe conclude from our data that genes in the chromosomal region 12q13–24 and in particular SCF are unlikely to exert a major effect on the induction of the atopic phenotype in our Caucasian population. However, we did not focus on the asthmatic and thereby inflammatory aspect of atopy which might explain these results in contradiction to previous studies.

    Notes: A cell-free extract (CFE) of Gluconobacter oxydans was encapsulated in milkfat, and used to generate acetic acid from ethanol as a means of enhancing flavor in foods, such as cheese. Factors affecting the activity of the CFE were evaluated to establish conditions that would allow gradual synthesis of acetic acid in milkfat microcapsules. Optimum pH for conversion of ethanol to acetic acid was 8.3. A pseudo Km and Vmax were determined as 7.6 ± 10-3 M and 55 μmol/1-min, respectively. Concentrations of acetic acid in microcapsules with the highest level of encapsulated CFE increased gradually over 40 hr to 75 μg/ml of capsules during incubation at 22°C. No measurable acetic acid was produced from appropriate controls.

    Notes: Cytogenetic studies on renal cell carcinomas (RCCs) have disclosed a correlation between chromosome aberrations and histomorphological features. Nevertheless, it is still controversial whether the cytomorphology of the tumour cells (clear cell, chromophilic, chromophobe) or their growth pattern (nonpapillary, papillary) is more discriminative for the combined histomorphological–cytogenetic classification of RCCs.〈section xml:id="abs1-2"〉〈title type="main"〉Methods and resultsThree RCCs with papillary growth pattern and clear cell cytomorphology were analysed by classical cytogenetics using standard G-banding techniques. Each tumour displayed clonal aberrations leading to loss of terminal 3p chromosomal segments. Monosomy 14 was also consistently found. Trisomy 17 was not observed in any of the tumours.〈section xml:id="abs1-3"〉〈title type="main"〉ConclusionsThis series of three RCCs consisting of clear cells with papillary architecture revealed chromosomal aberrations characteristic for the conventional (clear cell) RCC. Irrespective of the predominant papillary growth pattern, none of the cases were characterized by trisomy of chromosomes 3q, 7, 8, 12, 16, 17 and 20 and loss of Y chromosome which are widely regarded as the most consistent genetic alterations for papillary RCC. Therefore, our cytogenetic findings provide evidence that papillary clear cell RCCs should be classified according to their cytomorphology rather than their growth pattern even when papillary architecture is prominent.
