    Notes: This paper presents a multi-level frontal algorithm and its implementation and applications on parallel computation. A multi-frontal program is given which may be used for unsymmetric finite element matrix equations. The parallel program is developed on a cluster of workstations. The PVM (parallel virtual machine) system is used to handle communications among networked workstations. The method has advantages such as numbering of the finite element mesh in an arbitrary manner, simple programming organisation, smaller core requirements and computation times. An implementation of this parallel method on workstations is discussed, the speedup and efficiency of this method being demonstrated and compared with general domain decomposition method based on band matrix methods by numerical examples.

    Notes: Summary Three families with infants affected with campomelic dysplasia, a genetically determined mesenchymal disease frequently associated with sex reversal were studied. Two XY famales with ovarian gonadal differentiation and typical clinical features of campomelic dysplasia could be tested for H-Y antigen and were found to be H-Y negative.

    Notes: Abstract In this paper some considerations are presented about the equations needed to set up a model of the process of heat and mass transfer in porous media. A clear classification is made of the various types of equations used and of their physical meaning. Special attention is paid to the thermodynamic equilibrium equations and to their derivation since they are too often taken for granted. The importance of the various transport mechanisms (of mass and energy) is analyzed and the consequences that can arise when some term is neglected are indicated.

    Notes: Natural convection in rectangular cavities has been the subject of numerous studies carried out using numerical methods, and also of some experimental studies. In general, however, the majority of numerical studies lack comparisons with experimental data. In experimental studies, it is generally the total heat flow exchanged across the cavity that is measured; rarely are local measurements of velocities reported.In this study the authors have analysed free convection in a rectangular cavity with an aspect ratio of ∼ 5, in which a preset temperature difference is maintained between two vertical walls, and the other walls are insulated. Numerical analysis was carried out using a penalty finite element method, for different values of the Rayleigh number and different meshes. The numerically predicted velocities are compared with the first experimental data obtained for a rectangular cavity filled with silicone oil.
