Notes: Summary The authors report the results of a controlled clinical trial in patients with primitive and metastatic CNS tumours treated with combined therapy: surgery, radiotherapy, and chemotherapy (BCNU or CCNU). A total of 102 patients were treated, 50 with BCNU, and 52 with CCNU. The overall response (R. + P.R.) was 68% for the BCNU group, and 65% for the CCNU group. No significant differences were found between the two types of treatment, either in terms of response or in terms of quality and length of survival.

Notes: This paper presents a generally applicable approach to developing laminar flow problems in straight ducts of arbitrary shape. A three-level central alogrithm which does not require iterations is used to march ahead with the solution in the axial direction. The calculation procedure can be implemented by utilizing, with minor modifications, any standard finite element code for linear heat conduction.Several illustrative examples demonstrate accuracy and versatility of the proposed technique.

Notes: Natural convection in rectangular cavities has been the subject of numerous studies carried out using numerical methods, and also of some experimental studies. In general, however, the majority of numerical studies lack comparisons with experimental data. In experimental studies, it is generally the total heat flow exchanged across the cavity that is measured; rarely are local measurements of velocities reported. In this study the authors have analysed free convection in a rectangular cavity with an aspect ratio of ∼ 5, in which a preset temperature difference is maintained between two vertical walls, and the other walls are insulated. Numerical analysis was carried out using a penalty finite element method, for different values of the Rayleigh number and different meshes. The numerically predicted velocities are compared with the first experimental data obtained for a rectangular cavity filled with silicone oil.
